We stayed for 4 nights in November. We had an incredible time at the Lion camp, with so much wildlife right on the doorstep. The resident Leopards, Fig and Figlet, greeted us on our first game drive and it carried on from there with drive...More
We live in Kenya for a couple of months now and this was our first safari.
It was absolutely unbelievable and amazing. Problem: I do not know how this could be topped!
From the game viewing to the tents to the attentive service to the...More
We spent 3 nights at Porini Lion Camp. I have zero complaints. Zero. The camp staff was amazing. The kitchen staff was able to accommodate some special diet requests, with seemingly no problem. The camp manager Patrick not only runs a well oiled operation, but...More
Ever had one of those moments when you can't find the words to describe an experience?

If you book through Gamewatchers Safaris Ltd, who book the Porini Camps, you will be picked up by their driver at the international airport, taken to your hotel, and then the next morning they will drive you to Wilson Airport, where the small planes take you to camp. We were cared for from our arrival until our departure at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
I do not like really hot weather, so we have gone late June to early July on one trip and in August on another. It is cold when we start in the morning 40's to 50's and probably high 70's to 80's in the afternoon. I think that September and October might be warmer than July and August Our summer is their winter. Winter is cold and dry, Summer is hot and a wetter time of year. I would think more mosquitoes. Winter has the migration, so there are a lot of wildebeest and zebra and therefore easy hunting for predator families.
This camp is in a conservancy on the Masai Mara, but not in the national park. We have never seen more than 3 other vehicles while watching a family of animals. We have gone into the national park to watch the migration on one trip and there were at least 15 cars near us that we could see and about 30 on the other side of the river. You do not have to stay on the roads in the conservancy which means if you see lions 100 yards away, you can drive up as close as 10 or 15 ft to baby lions, depending on the circumstances (guides decision), or follow cheetahs as they hunt down dinner.
I would also recommend the balloon flight unless you are afraid of heights. My husband followed us this last trip and took pictures of our balloon ride.
I hope this helps. Good luck. It is an amazing experience.

Weather was great. No bugs at all. I was actually shocked. Took multiple brands of repellent and never touched any of them. Cool in the AM, but occasionally got very warm in the afternoon, but cool again by Sundowner time.

I have been taking my son o safari since he was 8 years old - kids take their cues from parents - if you are relaxed and enthralled by the proximity of the animals - they will be too. The tents are very safe. After dark you are escorted to and from your tents.
