Cairo, Egypt3 contributions

Our trip was Feb 29 to Mar 7, 2020 to Cairo and Luxor. We had purposely book downtime during our time from Sun to Sat. We had booked with Memphis Tours

We got to the airport and were greeted by super friendly, smiley, happy Hisham. He was our organizer, so he really was in charge of us. It was nice because he took a look at our schedule and made some suggestions and changes to better enhance our trip and overall experience. You will not be disappointed with Memphis, Hisham or Amira. I plan to return to Egypt again and will definitely be contacting them to assist me. You will definitely need a driver as the traffic and driving is insane. The lines on the road are decoration, the beeping (an there is a lot of it) is insane but in reality it is beautiful Arabic music. Just know even those that drive have a driver in Giza/Cairo.

Our guide in Giza/Cairo, Asama (Sam) and our driver Mahmoud were both amazing.
Sam's is both a teacher and author, his knowledge made our experience beyond what we could have asked for. Mahmoud was so sweet, although he doesn't speak English very well, he was trying. I can 100% say I felt very safe with him, which really helps in the crazy traffic.

I had come to expect the excellent attention and service we got that from, Sam, Hisham and Mahmoud.
However, what we received when we got to Luxor, was above and beyond anything we could have asked for because of Shaimaa. I told Shaimaa “I'm taking you home with me”.

She was amazing and I am going to be lucky to have her become a true friend. My daughter was not feeling well due to a cold and Shaimaa helped her to feel better, so she could enjoy the day. She treated my daughter like her own! She was like her true mom. We discussed my health issue and she even made sure I had an umbrella to help shield me from the majority of the Sun. I could not have asked for a more perfect day with the scheduled activities and perfect guide. I told her I wanted real street food, She took us to a little place that she was familiar with (and ate at often, it was extremely food safe) and I can tell you, I have never had a better sandwich then this one. Then we had another slight schedule adjustment, we added a Sunrise hotair balloon trip. If you are in Luxor this is a bucket list item. You will be blown away.

The other amazing thing with Memphis Tours was, they ensured our safety and supplied us a driver for an extremely out of the way mini self adventure on our down day. We had to go to Pizza Hit/KFC near the Pyramids, as we thought it was the funniest thing ever! For the first time in your adventures you will be disappointed with the food and flavours. However just being able to say you had Pizza Hut and KFC near the Pyramids was worth it.

Additional activities to think of:
Sound and lights show at the Pyramids of Giza
An evening dinner and mini Nile cruise.
Hot air balloon

We booked through Wanderlust Travel which was not a good experience as they have several hidden costs and you end up paying considerably more than what you thought. We arrived in the early afternoon and it took us just over an hour to get through the crazy Cairo traffic to the hotel. Check in took about 20 minutes and seemed unnecessarily long given that our accommodation was fully paid months before. The porter was friendly and took our bags to our room. The room and bathroom was spacious and clean. There was warm water at various times of the day with good water pressure. Basic toiletries are provided as well as tea, coffee, a small kettle and lots of complimentary bottled water as the tap water is not for consumption. The hotel has alot of potential and a good upgrade would go a long way to having a better experience. Request a room with a view of the pyramids. There is a nice gym attached to the spa, which was largely unused by visitors. It has a few treadmills, other gym equipment and a small studio attached to it. Towels and drinking water is provided. The breakfast buffet was vast with lots of cooked meals available as well as fruit, fruit salad, cereals, pancakes, a huge range of pastries, breads, etc, etc. It is possible to find something that suits your dietary needs. We also enjoyed lunch there which was good, with a dessert menu that will leave you heading to the gym soon. There are three fairly big pools outside which were well-maintained and clean. There are three ATM machines if you are needing Egyptian pounds, but the machine refused to accept our American dollars. Staff are friendly and try their best to understand requests made in English. Overall I would say this is a 3 star hotel, with potential for another star.

* Please note - actual stay here was September 2018.
Hotel was clean, staff were efficient and it's situated in an area ideal as a base to see Cairo and the wonders of Giza, Saqqara and Memphis.
Enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere of the outdoor terrace with the views of the pyramids. Shisha was good however, after the first glass of very expensive and exceptionally ropy Merlot decided to stick to the beer.
Breakfast was good but I would advise, if possible, go down toward the end of service as by then all the tours have left and it's much quieter. We only ate there one evening from the lobby bar and that was a simple pizza which was quite good but we were disappointed as we wanted to eat at the pool island bar but that only opens for lunch.
The hotel felt safe but I would not advise venturing out onto the main street mainly due to the traffic and the fact that there is nothing much around to see but also due to the area looking rather less safe.
The one real criticism I must raise was on our so called upgrade. We booked this hotel WITH a pyramid view 8 months prior to our holiday however, on arrival we were offered a free upgrade to a suite. When we got to the room we had no view, except the car park main gate and very busy road. My husband went straight down to reception to request we were moved to our original room which we found out DID have a pyramid view but he was told that room was no longer available. I have seen other travellers comment on this too so be warned. The room/suite itself was large and comfortable if a little tired and would be ok if you are not bothered about a view.
We only stayed for 2 nights before continuing on to a Nile cruise and had book a full itinerary of sightseeing so it sufficed but if we were to return to Cairo we would probably stay at the Mena House

We spent 3 days at Le Meridien. The hotel is a beautiful property with nice amenities.
The room was clean and comfortable. The staff - doorman, security, reception, restaurant staff and hose keeping were excellent. I would like to give a shout out to the young man, Mohamed Redu, who always made sure our room had everything we needed. He just went the extra mile to make sure we had a great stay at Le Meridien. Mohamed was just one of the many shining stars at the hotel.

Basically I ended up spending more than trip.com booking for the room by booking with the hotel. Then they didn’t give me access to the club lounge (which has a great view and was totally empty ) even though I had a club room. They said it was an upgrade even though the front desk didn’t tell me this at booking. Totally unfair, you should get an advantage for going directly to the hotel. Other than this event thing else was like a normal budget hotel, yet they charge 5 star price. Switched to the kempinski Nile hotel even though it’s my last day, just because I didn’t like that they didn’t give me access to the lounge. ( they requested another 59 usd for lounge access) another guest told me they received lounge access and he paid less for the room. Breakfast also had its issues, they use instant coffee, maple flavored corn syrup rather than maple syrup, low quality eggs. I just think if you want to claim 5 star status and charge that price be up to the standards of quality and hospitality. Great view of the pyramids and it was cleaner than average.

The only reason you would stay at this hotel is for the pyramid views - and be very sure that your request is actioned. We requested a pyramid view but arrived late at night and didn’t see that we had an obscured side view room until the morning - we tried to discuss this on checkout to no avail !!! Rooms are very outdated, beds average, bathroom extremely small, toilet barely worked (didn’t flush), no mini bar, shower leaked (don’t know if pyramid view rooms are better), room / furnishings stunk of smoke. Bedlam in the reception area on arrival and departure (after waiting nearly an hour at 10pm we went and retrieved our own bags), breakfast buffet equally shambolic. This is not a 4+ star hotel by any means. Would not recommend - let’s the hotel brand down.

We stayed 2 nights at this hotel as part of our guided tour up the Nile via coach, Dahabiya (sail boat with tug), Lake Nasser cruise boat and various hotels. It was certainly one of the better hotels we stayed at with ATMs in the foyer and a bank to change money.
The room as comfortable and clean with a functioning safe and we had a view of the Pyramids over the swimming pool.
We had 1 a la carte dinner in the restaurant when we arrived tho' a buffet was offered from 6 pm. The breakfast was extensive but very busy with queues for omelettes, etc. and if you were away from your table for too long, it tended to get cleared away.
There was a coffee bar in the foyer with delectable cakes.
We visited the Pyramids on our tour but you could walk to them if necessary. The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) was also nearby but scheduled to open late 2020 - maybe. We did visit the Cairo Museum but some items have already moved to the GEM!
Local restaurants are very few and tend to be unlicensed but there was a nearby store for buying water etc.

The view from the pool is the great pyramids of Giza so you cant fault it when sunbathing. However, when trying to charge drinks to our room on two occasions they couldn't find our names on the system, which meant three or four visits from various staff to us each time disturbing our relaxation. No explanation for this could be had from the desk when I visited, just a curt dismissal and the promise to rectify. Then the room cards ceased to work and we couldn't use the lifts or access the room. The next day when we returned from a long hot day in the desert to find our room was still unattended to at 4.00pm and there was scant concern when it was reported. The room was big, two queen size beds and stylish fittings. When trying for a seat in the bar to eat, we were put in lonely corner with so little light we couldn't see the menu without our phone light. We were given a menu, then told it was not on, had it removed and then replaced with exactly the same menu. Only on the way out anybody was anyone bothered we weren't too impressed. We managed to book a seat in the Mediterranean restaurant for new years eve, but the young lady taking the new year bookings was less than helpful and quite grumpy, even to the manager of the restaurant we'd roped in to help. Only at check out did the staff rise to the challenge, where a young lady was quite concerned about our lack of room servicing. At least one of the staff got it right.

We had 2 rooms city view booked through Marriot Bonvoy and we were staying in high season Dec 25 to Dec 28. They upgraded us on arrival to pool view and connecting rooms. They provide complimentary water bottles 3 per day per room. The only down point was they charged me for a bottle of water from the mini bar on checkout but once I explained we did not take from the mini bar they removed the charge. Lovely rooms and big hotel. Room service breakfast was great.

It is beautiful property but need to work on many issues. I booked a room thru Booking.com but upgraded as I wanted Pyramid view. I paid and I got half Pyramid view. On insistence shifted again and got 'full pyramid' view. Some issues truly disappointed me vis a vis Marriott Hotel family service expectation such as
# One tea bag of 'English Breakfast' in room. If you wife wants tea too 'ask for it'
# If you need even one baggage stand 'ask for it'
# Need hair dryer 'ask for it'
# Need more than 1 litre water ask for it
# Need TV remote to work 'ask for it'
# need light of magnifying mirror to work 'ask for it'
#If you need tea bag in evening 'ask for it' +'ask for it'+'ask for it'. Ignore if boy brings a pile in his hands without tray
There was a constant need of 'Asking' for basics and it needed few reminders all the time. I understand this is a good and reasonably priced hotel if it is off season. Also if hotel has charged 12.5% Service Tax why on a room service of a cup of tea or anything you ask they write so prominently 'Gratuities' .
I paid $130 as service charge. Does hotel give it to staff or encourages them them to seek tips ? Also a tip (not gratuities)as traveler- if you want anything from live counters in breakfast please go for breakfast at 7 AM. Later it becomes crowded for which they don't plan.
Well has some one told them that hotel urgently needs renovation and English speaking travel desk person who should not charge 5 times the normal cab rate.
