We recently stayed 5 nights at the Hotel Valide Sultan Konagi, and could not be more pleased. Although the rooms were a bit small, as you would expect from a mansion in the heart of Old Istanbul, they were charmingly decorated, and absolutely meticulously clean and well cared-for. And plenty of hot-hot water! I have nothing but praise for the...

Hotel Valide Sultan is an ideal place to stay when visiting Istanbul. Located in Sultanahmet, the old city, just a few-minute walk from the Haija Sofia, the Topkapi Palace and the Blue Mosque, it's a bright, clean, cheerful hotel. I even got great night photos of the Haija Sofia from my bedroom window! The rooftop restaurant is mostly breakfast, but...

Located in the heart of the historic Sultanahmet district of Istanbul, the Hotel Valide Sultan is an excellent place to stay at. The hotel is situated right next to the Topkapi Palace and a few minutes walk away from the Hagia Sophia Museum and the Blue Mosque. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. Great service, great room and within walking distance to the water, the mosques, shopping etc. It was in a great location. The rooms were charming and well decorated. Excellent location in the old part of Istanbul. Very close to most historic points of view, public transport (tram) and situated nearby an alley with nice turkish restaurants. Staff is very friendly and helpful. In particluar Benjamin (Bunyamin) at the front desk. The room was small but functional, clean, air-conditioned. Overall impression: good value for my money. This hotel is perfectly located for visiting all of the sites in the historical part of Istanbul. We had room #309 which gave you wonderful views of the sea and the Asian side as it was a corner room with windows on two of the walls. The rooms are very pleasant and your usual European size. The bathroom was marble...

Rooms are really small and far too "chintzy" for my taste. Staff was nice but everybody is nice with tourists in Istanbul ! What I did not like was the recommendations given, for instance I wanted to go to a hamman which was recommended in my book, but the chap at reception said no do not go to this one,...

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighbourhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
