Located on a shabby street in Sultanahmet but walking distance to all the cultural sights (purpose of trip). Hotel was very plain and a bit dreary, not the boutique hotel it was sold as. Absolutely no charm. Breakfast was mediocre but with coffee that resembled light tea and orange juice that was clearly TANG. Staff/service was inconsistent with breakfast staff... More

My partner took me to the Obelisk Hotel as a suprise weekend in Istanbul for Valentine's Weekend. The hotel is above average in many ways and it is certainly very well located, just a short stroll from the Blue Mosque and the Ayasofia. The rooms are large, clean and comfortable but our biggest problem was with the terrible soundproofing. We... More

This hotel has just been refurbished. We booked with Last minute.com and were very pleased. The pictures on the hotel website do not do the place justice. All rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable with 24" Phillips flat screen tvs. The mattress's are on the firm side, but thats the way we like it. I booked two rooms, a triple... More

The hotel is undergoing a renovation and it's almost completed. We stayed there as part of a tour group from the U.S. The hotel is in the Old District of Istanbul just a short walk from the Blue Mosque, Grand Bazaar and Haia Sophia. However, don't waste $$ on a Sea View Room unless you get to see it beforehand.... More

The room was large, comfortable, well maintained, and very clean. The breakfast was generous and Turkish (not American). The staff was courteous and helpful, particularly Mr Turkmas. The only downside was the hotel provided (at high cost) car to take us TO the airport - a very rude driver! On the other hand the driver of the car (provided free... More

Great location and nice rooms at a good price - but be warned: don't stay there if you want to get a good night's sleep! I was there three terrible, sleep deprived, nights - making it difficult to really enjoy the glories of Istanbul. The walls were paper-thin, meaning that you could hear every cough, word, knock, snore, wheeze, flush... More

Thanks to the Obelisk Hotel staff for making me feel so at home during my 8-night stay in Istanbul October 17-25, 2007. Sinan Cam and Mehmet Aycicek at the front desk were especially helpful, friendly, and professional. My room was comfortable and cleaned spotless every day. The breakfast buffet was fresh and plentiful with tasty Turkish offerings; my favorites were... More

Pat from England - Very friendly, helpful staff and a lovely comfortable room with a sea view made our stay in Istanbul a great experience. We stayed for a week and enjoyed all the famous sights which were all a 5 minute walk from the hotel, such as the Aya Sofia, the Cistern (our favourite), the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace... More

Good points - excellent location, lovely terrace (Blue Mosque is very close), good room size, excellent air conditioning, cleaning team excellent - room always kept clean. Small fridge with reasonably priced drinks. Free internet in reception area was very useful. Ideally located for main Istanbul attractions - all walking distance. Poor points - Not many sockets in room (electrics looked... More

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighbourhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
