An iconic building at the heart of Colombo, located overlooking the busy harbor; gifted with history, it is where comfort blends with affordability for the most discerning traveler. This fine piece of architecture speaks of the country's colonial times and with a spectacular view of Colombo Harbour. The splendidly decorated 80 rooms are fully air-conditioned while Queen Elizabeth (2) , Anton Chekhov and Joze Rizal, are the luxury suites overlooking the Colombo harbor, offering a fantastic view for their guests. It is more than just a hotel. It is home away from home.

Food was quiet normal not extravagant, we went to a buffet lunch which was Rs.1880/- per head without the beverages .Calm place with a good pianist providing music. set up with normal tables and chairs. friendly staff. Have to give an appreciation to Ms. Wasana in the Harbor restaurant , she was so friendly. View of the harbor was fantastic. everything was antique.

Although this old hotel is rather worn, we had an excellent stay. The staff were lovely and the location safe and accessible. We loved the Harbour Restaurant on the fourth floor with its panoramic view of the harbour. Good food and reasonably priced wine.

I was a bit dubious about this hotel having read some of the reviews, but went ahead as was only one night and it was very reasonable, in fact cheap. I was pleasantly surprised. The room was clean and comfortable, the staff were all helpful and pleasant. I had an enjoyable drink and very nice dinner with superb views in the rooftop bar and restaurant. What more do you need for a stopover in a very convenient central location? I would have no hesitation staying here again.

I booked the Grand Oriental for 3 nights for me and my family (partner, 1 year old toddler). I booked this place because I was intrigued by a 19th century hotel that was still/again running as a hotel, but as a kind of budget, 3 star accommodation. Honestly, it was like staying in the Titanic as it has so much old furniture, old grandeur feeling, fascinating twists and turns, and grittiness of a place that needs a good scrub 😬. If only the walls could talk! There were problems with the hot water, mini fridge and there was even a small flood in our room. But, honestly, because the staff were so lovely and our expectations were aligned with the 3-star stay, all of this was part of the charm. Because of the small inconveniences mentioned above, the staff also went above and beyond to make sure the problems were solved and we were comfortable. They did this all with a smile and high level of service. I would recommend my family and friends to stay here. Also, the location was good (near the train station, near the Dutch Hospital restaurants, not too far from Galle Face Green). Thank you, Grand Oriental staff and management for a charming stay!

OK Folks once upon time this used to be one of the best hotels in Sri Lanka. That was decades ago, this is one of the very few Sri lankan government owned hotel today. This is not so luxurious to match a five star, but a pretty good hotel which fits in well for a three star. There are glitches here and there, it's an old building, you might find the hot water not working or a broken switch, pardon that, the hotel is working very hard to fix those with the little financial resources they have. The staff of the hotel are very kind and hard working. If you request them for something, they will not hesitate to try there best to satisfy your needs. The hotel has undergone a renovation recently and working hard to maintain a good menu of food. Again people are good and hard working but with the financial resources they have, there are limitations. Overall its a good 3 star hotel with a decent menu of food and really polite people. Help them by reserving your rooms with this little place which has a big history, the more guest who visit this place, the more money they get, so they can serve you better the next time your arrive. Be kind when making your reviews, try to look through the eyes of good people here who are trying to make your stay the best ever. Let encourage more people to use thus hotel so they can soon start to cater you with five star perfection.

What a mess.
The lovely entrance hall to this hotel is highly deceptive – broken electricity socket in the room that had clearly burned out years ago, no hot water, no toilet paper. There was a breakfast menu, but when we went to the restaurant, they told us that none of the items were available. One of the managers told me I should write to them with a formal complaint, which I did, but never got a reply. I’m sure this place was nice once, but not anymore.

We stayed 3 nights in this hotel which overlooks the port area and a soon to be built expressway ! The location is easily accessible to shopping, markets and sightseeing.
We had a large and comfortable air conditioned room although climbing in and out of the deep bath tub for a shower required care and the shower curtain could be replaced.
The hotel itself has the quirky charm of the grand old days including some original crockery. If you are a history buff or an admirer of old world grandeur then this is the place. The hotel has aged but staff are the hotel’s greatest assets.
Staff provided excellent service and were attentive to our every need. We would stay here again before some big hotel chain gobbles it up.

+1
Its heyday was the 1930s, and not much has been changed since then. I love the history and faded colonialism. Many of the fittings were fabulously retro or broken and patched. Antique lifts. The view from the window to the internal courtyard is not pretty. The view at breakfast is wonderful, Into the port. The breakfast is fine. The staff were fine. It is clean And good value for money, I paid AU$62 for bed only. It is in need of a major renovation by somebody like Raffles Singapore

Lovely old hotel building opposite the old port buildings. The main foyer is been recently re-furnished and is an ideal place to grab a coffee if you are in the area and want to take in the sites. Has the potential to be a really lovely venue.

Yes they do. You can order a touk touk or a van like I did for my surfboard. They are on time and go fast. The fare is the regular price. Don't hesitate!

On the contrary, ths is the perfect hotel to sty when in Colombo, no matter if you are for work or holidays, alone or with your family....and the rooms are pretty large!!!! READ MY REVIEW AND MAYBE your questions will find answers :-) Highly recommended :-) A pearl of Colombo !
Also, I tell you after staying in other high standard hotels in Colombo, I still recommend GOH very very much! A TOP Hotel! In a TOP location!
