Reviews summary
This summary was created by AI, based on recent reviews.

Shangri-La Colombo emerges as a beacon of luxury and style, nestled in a prime location that guests adore for its easy access to the sea, lake, and central city attractions. The hotel's accommodations receive accolades for their lavish comfort, modern amenities, and breathtaking views. While opinions on value show a divide, with some guests finding dining reasonably priced and others taken aback by the cost of extras, the hotel's cleanliness is unanimously celebrated.
Service at the Shangri-La earns high praise, though it's not without occasional lapses. Guests are especially impressed with the range of amenities, including the diverse culinary offerings and the convenient attached mall.

Detailed Reviews
Stayed here for almost 3 weeks.
The hotel is beautiful and clean. The suite we had was lovely and spacious and had a balcony which was nice. The bathrooms are large and luxurious. The staff are very courteous and friendly. We did have an issue with our room and some lack of communication regarding this. Feedback was addressed promptly by the higher management and made us feel as our complaint didn’t just fall on deaf ears which is always a risk in large hotels.
Breakfast and horizon club was great and having horizon club access was excellent as it gives you breakfast, a light lunch if you want it, afternoon tea and canapés/drinks in the evening. The spread is quite substantial and left you feeling quite full. Obviously after three weeks at the hotel, it was getting a bit repetitive, but that’s not the hotels fault. Maybe a bit for variety at the breakfast would have been nice? It’s a pity the all day dining wasn’t open yet as there wasn’t a lot of restaurants you could go to, but I’m sure when it re-opens it will be great.
Aside from the room issue, one thing I found which I haven’t come across in some of the 5 star hotels around the world that we’ve stayed at, is how easily requests were denied. For example I asked for a dinner reservation. Several times I got a flat out “no it’s all booked”. Not even a “let me try and see what we can do” or a “sorry it’s not available but here are some other suggestions you may like”. It was just a straight up no.
When you try to compete to be one of the top hotels in the city, saying no to guests is not a good thing. This might sound like a petulant whining of a spoilt person, but when you pay that much money to stay for that period of time, I want to be made to feel like you are at least making an effort to try and meet my requests (even if you know deep down there’s no chance of getting what I request - at least try or give me some alternatives). When we stayed at the Shangri-La in Paris, Tony and the concierge team there were able to make the impossible happen. No request was ever too much and that (obviously probably not to that level) should be what the team here should strive for. To make the guest feel like they are a priority.

Dear Dinusha280 Many thanks for staying with us for 3 weeks. We greatly appreciate the feedback and pleased you enjoyed our Sri Lankan hospitality. Thank you for your suggestions on our concierge services - this has been brought to the attention of our team as making recommendations and finding alternatives is certainly what we aim to achieve. I am sorry the team were not more helpful and will strive to do better. Thank you once again for your constructive feedback regards Timothy Wright

We had our dinner at Kaema Suutra on 11th March 2020. The outside area of the restaurant is little smaller than other restaurants although the food was delicious and surved by extremely professional manner. Staff was highly polite and helpful and took very good care of us since beginning to the end of our dine. A special thank should go the hotel for inventing new herbal handwash to it's guests. The herbal handwas made by using Sri Lankan herb plant - "Iramusu" was very good and for me it was really nicer than the chemical handwashes. Thank you shangrila for making our day a remarkable one. Definitely the one of bests in Sri Lanka.

We absolutely loved the cleanliness and the comfort of Shangri-La Colombo.
Check in was easy, friendly staff and convenient location. Also it’s right by Galle Face Beach (no railroad track) so you can enjoy watching the sunset... or you can enjoy right from the hotel rooms & restaurants.
My only feedbacks are....
-Teach staff to pull proper espressos.
-An requirement to order food & drinks when using the cabana at the pool (a German family took up two cabana for hours, likely the entire day with no service).

Patronised One Galle Face Outlet.
Good to have barcoded menu to eliminate hard paper menu. Anti pandemic initiatives commendable.
Had ordered cheese cake, mocha coffee, hazel nut coffee and king coconut water.
Order took an unexpected long time to serve though few guests were present.
Served lukeworm coffee in cold cups. Cheese cake (excellent) served after coffee been served.
Took the coffee away for a hot one yet got nearly the same lukewarm coffee.
Sugar sachets and spoon also came along for coffee which was already sweetend. (would have been hot water jug) Nealry ended up consuming 6 coffees for two ordered. (Twice repalced)
Literally ruined the palate for few hours.
Noticed a waiter carrying a stack of cleaned plates hold tightly against his body under the arm.
Brewing temperature of water for coffee was way below 95 Celsius. Did not hear spurs out steam from the coffee machine.
Lack of supervision and training big time.
Gear up guys....

Visited Shangri La to collect a guest. Unlike any other place Shangri La charges Rs. 500 for valet parking. (this is 10 times the normal rate per hour in SL and Valet Parking is a free service in Sri Lanka as part of the hospitality industry). When the concern was raised was told that this is a VALUE ADDED Service. In other words, Shangri La is not a welcoming place. This is not the first times the hotel tried to fleece unsuspecting customers. As they opened they sold normal fish buns and other buns for exorbitant prices which shocked the Colombo community. Guests are advised to check the rates stated and unstated before they avail themselves of the hotel services. To say the least the charging practices are totally unethical.

Dear samanthieg Thank you for sharing your sentiments. Let me clarify our charges, which are clearly posted at the security checkpoint entering the hotel as well as at the lobby area where the valet collects the cars. We do offer our guests complimentary parking which is normally charged at Rs 100 per hour. Our parking area is covered, clean and well lit. Should guests wish the hotel to park their cars and then bring them to the entrance upon leaving, there is a nominal fee of Rs 500 that covers the cost of labour and insurance. regards Timothy Wright

We arrived to Colombo to extend our visas and decided to stay at Shangri La. It was definitely an amazing 4 days and in the last day I wanted to cry because we were leaving this palace.
We have enjoyed a wonderful high tea time and cocktail time with life music at Saphire lounge and in the evening we had an amazing dinner at Grill bar with some Jazz music and very nice and high service atmosphere. First day we had a dinner at Shangri palace and was so impressed by the food and service!
Rooms are very large and we had an amazing room in 27th floor with ocean view(very instagramable rooms)
Room was perfectly cleaned daily and you have all the necessary items at the room!
Concierge team was very helpful! Gave us many recommendations and helped with hotel cars
And also me and my boyfriend would like to mention Senali, amazing girl who was so kindly nice and delight us by her attention and care! She helped my boyfriend to organize the best birthday ever, recommended an amazing romantic place and was always in touch with us and made for us so many things! She helped us so much that we are planing to short our stay in other hotel and come back to Shangri La again because of so amazing people!)
See you soon, Shangri La Colombo

We stayed at the hotel in January 2020, and were welcomed by Hasan from the Guest Services Team. An efficient check in process in the room was done in a few minutes and then we were free to enjoy the hotel. The room was spacious with excellent views and lovely amenities.
We enjoyed breakfast each day in the restaurant on the ground floor, the high ceilings and views made it a very nice room to enjoy a leisurely breakfast in. Each day we enjoyed treatments in the spa, where the wonderful staff looked after us really well.
Overall this was a fantastic week relaxing in Colombo in clearly the best hotel in town, all the staff at the Shangri-La were wonderful but a special thanks to Hasan who really looked after us across the week we were there

Spent my first honeymood night here. We were introduced by Dulashini. Great view and the rooms were equipped with the latest tech and beds were really comfortable. Elevators are really smooth and had limited floor access to ensure privacy and safety. We had access to the top floor lounge with amazing customer service from Sanath and his team. Overall experiance was much better than we expected.

My suite which was situated on the 24th floor provided a panoramic view of the ocean. Offering a new level of luxury, everything one needs for a fabulous stay is catered for. The large bathroom featured a rain shower and bathtub while the toiletries were from Spa Ceylon. Everything on needs is provided from a toothbrush to a hairband ! The bed was extremely comfortable, and sent me to sleep the moment my head touched the pillow. The crystal chandelier in the lobby, which is in the shape of a beautiful open flower stretching across the ceiling is absolutely breathtaking. The hotel staff are extremely courteous and accommodating.

+1
Our stay at the Shangri La on 30th and 31st December was pleasant and enjoyable rounding up our short trip to Sri Lanka.
The exterior of the building is not particularly attractive but the amenities and service make up for it and the hotel lives up to its name of providing luxury.
Security is now a priority and a thorough screening of all vehicles and guests entering the hotel is welcome and comforting.
Plenty of staff at the concierge, poolside, restaurants and housekeeping, we found them professional, courteous and obviously very well trained.
The décor and facilities in our ocean-view room were chic and of high spec. A well-appointed bathroom and a comfortable bed with excellent quality bed and bath linen, robes and slippers was just what was needed.
The pool is small but well maintained, it has a nice view of the city and a well-equipped bar.
We tried Kaema Sutra and Sapphyr Lounge, both had good selection of food and drink and attentive service.
If there was a one area of concern in light of heightened security, it was the hotel’s internal corridor linking to the mall One Galle Face.

Going to Sri Lanka September 26th. A few questions.
* What are the best suites like.
* have stayed in the Taj in Columbo previously. How does the Horizon Lounge compare to the Taj Lounge
* any local best restaurants to recommend
* is it safe to walk out from hotel
* what’s the price of a Limo from the airport
Thanks
we stayed in a suite overlooking the ocean which was beautiful
did not have access to the lounge so cannot comment on that
we walked to the mall adjoining the hotel and had a meal at the food court there
did no twalk out from the hotel
not sure of limo price as we had a pickup with our tour company
Sorry we did not use any transport from the hotel as we had our own car and driver hired for the entire trip
Hi, the benefits are listed on the hotel website, but essentially you get a better quality room & lounge access, which is the biggest plus for breakfast & evening cocktails.
