You will not be disappointed by this boutique hotel in the medina. Excellent service, decent breakfast, nice decor. The credit card machine even works most of the time. There is even a pool and a great restaurant adjacent.

You arrive to the El Khan on a tiny bumpy rode in the middle of the old town. You walk in and it is a true old villa. Gorgeous Berber textiles and black and white photos of an earlier, happier era on the walls. Aref meets you at his desk, and he knows everything and everyone. He is so accommodating and you couldn't feel more welcomed or so sure you are talking to someone who knows all about Tripoli and is very proud of that. The restaurant is beautiful. The food is excellent. The rooms are immaculate. The bathrooms are not up to standard as far as plumbing, etc., although everything is very clean. The breakfast room is just normal, not at the same level as the rest of this beautiful place. At the end of the day, I would say, it was obvious the owners were constantly improving an already gorgeous place, it was immaculately clean everywhere, but if you're fussy, the bathrooms weren't up to par. Nevertheless, I hope I visit Tripoli again, soon, and I would definitely stay at the El Khan. There is NO other place that you get the atmosphere and stay in the old town with that level of beauty, comfort or service.

I stayed at the El Khan for two nights in March 2013 and loved every second. The hotel is in the middle of the old town, near the Arch of Marcus Aurelius, so you get to experience a more authentic taste of Tripoli than staying at the Raddisson or the Corinthia. Aref, the owner, is extremely helpful and will bend over backwards to accommodate you (and yes, you do have free internet that works all the time). The lobby is beautiful and exotic, the rooms are large and comfortable. I particularly love the lighting from the dozens of lamps around the property at night--truly magical. We ate in the restaurant both nights and I highly recommend the jarra-- it was the best meal I had in Tripoli. The fish is great too.

I stayed two weeks and really loved the place - very friendly and helpful staff, extremely tastefully decorated rooms and lobby, quite central location (no suitcase dragging, your taxi can drop you right at the doorstep). The only downsides: restaurant is overprized for what it offers (good, but not excellent food) and breakfast stays well beyond the otherwise exeptional level of this hotel - boring toast, jam and yoghurt, terrible coffee. And yes, mobile phone connection can be very bad, better to have one of the rooms on the first floor.

I stayed at the El-khan for 80 days and could not have been a happier traveler. The staff became my Libyan family, keeping me comfortable and making me laugh. The hotel is beautifully and tastefully appointed, full of lovingly, carefully chosen antiques and artifacts. It is endlessly photographable. I loved being in the medina where I could walk easily my favorite cafe at the Marcus Aurelius arch and Casa. There is always another zenga to explore and just about anything I needed was within a very quick or at least reasonable walk. The hotel neighbors were friendly and even the shop keeper at the local deli began treating me like I belonged. The children would greet me with a chorus of hellos after figuring out that I spoke English. Lastly, the menu at Tajeen is wonderful, but my favorite were the tuna sandwiches the chef made, tailored to both my mild American palette and my more adventurous Libyan colleagues' preference for lots of harissa.
