We stayed here over the NYE weekend for a festival. Prices were ok for a double room, the bathrooms had a smell come up from the drains which was awful. They put us in a room overlooking the road which was incredibly noisy. Staff were very friendly and helpful though.
I run a not-for-profit organization in Guatemala and often bring teams for service projects. In Santiago we stay at La Estrella. The hotel is very economical, immaculate and well kept. There is a beautiful new pool that our teams love. The rooms and balconies offer breathtaking views of Lake Atitlan and the volcanos. The owner and his buddies--Cruz, Antonio, and Ronald are as nice and accommodating as can be. They have helped us find reliable restaurants for visitors, building materials, and even a mechanic for my car. Santiago can be cool in the mornings and evenings. When we return from working we need showers. The hot water and water pressure have always been reliable. The hotel also has better wi-fi than most hotels, as there are routers on every floor. The only issue is something beyond the hotel's control--noise in Santiago. The street is very noisy early in the morning and late at night. This is mostly due to busses and trucks passing by. Be sure to request a room away from the street. Also, as one commenter mentioned, the rooster(s) at the neighbors next door get going in the middle of the night. This is not unique to La Estrella--you will always hear roosters, cows and dogs in Santiago. Earplugs are a big help. Overall, if you are staying in Santiago and want a clean, comfortable, economical room at a friendly hotel, La Estrella is your place.…
Santiago is a wonderful town, and I'm glad we stayed at this charming property. Pros: -Very friendly staff -Secure parking -VERY, VERY clean hotel -Great rooms and bathrooms -Wifi throughout the hotel -Wonderful terraces with a view of the volcano -Great value for the money -Nice swimming pool Cons: -The rooster(s) next door can be quite vocal early in the morning! This was actually quite humorous, and you'll get the local experience if you're in a room near that edge of the hotel adjacent to the hotel with the chickens.
This hotel was about $30 a night, inexpensive even by Guatemalan standards. It has free wifi and a comfortable double bed. The rooms are not large, but they are adequate. The bathroom was fine. It is in a quiet neighborhood. For the frugal traveller, it's a good deal.
Loved it! We got the room on the top floor and came with a personal balcony overlooking the lake view. The room is small but clean and sufficient for our stay. The walk is about 6 min to the Main Street and convenient. The receptionist was very nice and willing to help.
Good location with a view of the lake and town, especially from the roof. Clean rooms, great wifi, hot water and helpful staff all for about 250 Q about 33 US for 2 persons. It was worth staying over a night from Panajachel. The hotel was nice and got to enjoy a good walk around without having to take the last boat in the dark.
Don't be put off by the fact that the reception area looks like a working garage. The family that owns the place is adding two new apartments and the construction materials have to be stored somewhere. The rooms are above, and are neat and clean and priced well. We chose room 13, which is at the very top of the structure. It's three flights up, but we got a better price (Q200) and enjoyed two private decks with great views. If they would put a comfy chair or two up there, it would be perfect.
I am so happy someone recommended this place. It was clean, quiet and safe. They had secure parking for my car and a friendly staff. The room was small but the balcony just outside my room made up for it. I spent all my time there enjoying the amazing views of Lake Atitlan and watching the hustle of the city. Only a few blocks from the tourist area adn on the main road everything was right there. I ended up spending an extra night just because it was so enjoyable.
Want to experience local customs, language (Tzutzuil or Spanish), be right next to the lake and feel completely at home. This is the place. Don't let the modest price fool you, the rooms are really clean and each floor has it's own lake view balcony where you can participate in the rooftop back yard culture. Rooftop wood ovens, chickens, dogs, and more all with the lake and mountains as a backdrop. The family owned small hotel is almost always busy. In February they were making a swimming pool and all the family are artisans. They will take care of you and can pick you up in Guatemala if you want. Cruz - Antonio and family will make you at home in Atitlàn.
