My husband and I went here before the pandemic hit and this place is a God send. I wanted to experience the jungle without all the high end fuss - I wanted an authentic experience and this fit the bill exactly. First, the staff make this place. They truly care about their job and this is palatable in how they deal with you. They want to make sure you are comfortable and enjoy your stay. We were in hut ___ and this was on the hill and extra quiet, which is exactly what I wanted. We heard no noise other than birds, insects and the fantastic howler monkeys. The howler monkeys really make the Lodge - that and the trails and the river. This place is so magical that there will always be a piece of my heart at Pook's Hill and I do not say that lightly. I actually cried at the airport because I loved this place so much. If you truly want to experience a "jungle," then you must stay here.

We loved Pooks Hill! We had the family lodge plus one other lodge. Getting there is an adventure on the long bumpy road, but it makes you feel as if you are in a remote jungle (you are!). The property is amazing!! Beautiful trails through the jungle to explore. It was fun gathering with everyone for an amazing home cooked Belizean meal. The main lodge is a wonderful place to hang out and watch the hummingbirds, lay on a hammock, or talk with others while enjoying a drink. Our family even played croquet a couple of times right in the middle of some mayan ruins! Ray and the other team members were very professional and eager to help. When our caving trip was canceled due to heavy rainfall, they helped us rebook on a different excursion and provided the transportation. If you are looking for an authentic jungle lodge experience with good food and service, you will be happy with Pooks Hill!

We spent 6 days at Pook's Hill, hiking the trails, bird watching, relaxing and enjoying the surrounding jungle. Had many good evening discussions with Ray, the owner, over Belikin beers. While we stayed in one of the two more remote Bird Cabanas, the lounge area above the restaurant was an inviting meeting place (an open air space, with roof but no windows or screens). It had an honor system bar with lots of comfortable chairs and even a couple of hammocks. The many hummingbirds provided the background "buzzing", until the Howler Monkeys cut loose. While we didn't actually see any, we heard them every day, particularily around dawn and dusk. The area had lots of birds, particularily parrots and toucans, and egrets down by the river. There's an on-site Mayan ruins right in the center of the resort. The only animals we saw were agouti's and an opossum. A hike down to the river at Red Cliff made for a refreshing swim on a hot day! Dasha did a great job at serving the meals and keeping our unit clean, and the meals were very hearty, thanks to the kitchen staff. Our tour by canoe into the Barten Creek Caves, guided by Dennis, was really spetacular, as was our tour of the butterfly farms, which raised many giant blue Morpho and Owl butterflies, as well as other species. We also had many good talks with Ray's son, Jake, who was there with two of his students from South Hampton , UK, studying the impact on hunting in Belize. Great discussions there!

We just returned from our second consecutive visit to Pook's Hill. This year was strictly a birding/wildlife photography adventure. And it was a success. (Last year we did a lot of cultural activities.). Pook's has many acres of native jungle with well kept trails. They also maintain a few meadows creating forest edges which provide for successful avain photography. We also were treated to offsite birding: Yalbec lagoons for waders, Pine Ridge Reserve for raptors, etc. Our guide Miguel was patient and knowledgable, with great eyes and ears. Just a great person to be with for the days. Pook's Hill Lodge is a bit off the beaten path, but still provides all the creature comforts with great food and clean cabanas. The staff is very friendly and eager to please. There is a social hour before dinner--nice to meet fellow guests and compare the adventures of the day.

Ray and his team work hard to ensure you have an “away from it all” stay and enjoy the delights of this setting, but you are in the jungle, in comfortable accommodation but please don’t expect 5* luxury. The heat of the shower water is enhance daily by the burning of nuts from the Cohune tree and you are asked not o use a hairdryer as the electric power will struggle, but the peace and tranquility of the surroundings makes up for the lack of some creature comforts. The Bird Walk Cabanas give you a truly jungle experience across their own walkway and we were fortunate to be allocated one of these rooms, however the site is terraced, which although allowing for some beautiful views across the tree tops, may cause issues for anyone with restricted mobility. We particularly enjoyed the evening get togethers before dinner with dips and hand made crisps and the hospitality of the owner, the home cooked food and conviviality around the meal table. The bird guides are knowledgeable and necessary as although there are a multitude of birds to spot they can be somewhat elusive within the tree canopies. Plenty of cultural and activity tours on offer if you so choose.
