First of all, the owner is a very nice and helpful lady and the place is affordable. But. Our twin room was extremely small and the beds were so uncomfortable it's hard to describe. There's a ceiling fan in the room but it's still quite warm. The shared bathroom was fairly clean. Walking distance from the water taxi pier. No...

This family run hostel is quaint, clean and affordable. The owners are very helpful and they are always smiling. As a female solo traveller I felt safe considering Belize City is a bit dodgy. I stayed for six nights and it was pleasant. I would not recommend anyone to stay in the city for that long though. One day is...

We had a really nice room with big, clean shared bathroom. Balcony with chairs and table outside our room. Great location with rear balcony looking onto the water. 5 minute walk to restaurants and shops. Run by a friendly and helpful family. They have internet and serve food and drinks too. We paid $24USD (48 Belize) for a twin room...

I had the occasion to stay two nights and found it to meet my needs. I took the single room with shared bathroom which was cheaper than with a private bath. It was fine. The bathroom was clean, though the water in the shower was very cold. In the room, Anna provided towels, toilet paper, soap, and even a little...

PROs 1. Anna, the owner/hostess, is a gem. She speaks both Spanish and English, and she is an excellent cook. She is also fairly friendly. 2. The location is great. It's just about a block or two from the boats out to the cayes if you are interested in that sort of thing. It's also just a few buildings down...

We stayed in Smokin Balam Guest House for one night in June 2013. The room was very basic (toilet behind a curtain, cold shower, no air-con), but it was clean and comfortable enough for one night with a good internet connection. Our hostess was a delight - very friendly and helpful, and cooked us the best breakfast we'd had in...

Rooms are simple (no A/C, no hot water, only a curtain seperates the shower from the room) and a bit small but it is quiet, it is safe and everything works (fans, WiFi, shower and toilet) and the owner/host is great! You can have breakfast and lunch (at a very small extra cost) - they serve the best omelette and...

Absolutely wonderful family, very accommodating. Offered a very safe and comfortable home-like feel when I stayed there! I think Belize city can be a very interesting place to stay for a few days. It's not the place to stay if you're just there for sight seeing or pleasure but it is culturally very interesting. However, it is not the safest...

If you travel with your life's savings in your backpack and an array of superexpensive items, you're safe with Anna and her draconian paranoid grandma tactics. The first thing you must note about Smokin Balam is that it's a bait and switch "LowCost" guest house where the low price of the room hides the fact that they're out to get...

Although this is not the sort of accommodation I'd normally seek out I really have to hand it to Smokin' Balam and Anna for doing such a fine job. The location just a couple blocks north of the swing bridge is perfect for everything you might need for a short Belize City stay. The ferries to the cayes are within...
