Will recommend for travelers that want to experience a hostel for the first time. It was clean, staff was nice, they served free breakfast. The most important for me was the 10 min distance from the National Mall.

I stayed there last month for the second time, it's one of the best hostels I've stayed in the US. Great location, comfortable beds, clean bathrooms. HI DC has everything you need and expect from a hostel. The staff is very friendly, specially the man that welcomes every guest at the elevator during breakfast. I just had two small problems...

alinedel05: Welcome back! We are thrilled to be at the top of your list of hostels in the US! Lots of good stuff in your review...thanks! About the Wi-Fi, you are correct. We are increasing the bandwidth, again, which should alleviate the issue. We recently upgraded, but even that was not enough. More to come! I am guessing from your...

As a solo traveler, this was the best for my budget. I like that my worry about cleanliness was put to rest upon walking into the hostel. I could not have asked for more. Very nice and clean and located in walking distance to almost everything you would want to see in the DC. Area.

Kerry M: "Best on a Budget." I really like the sound of that! So nice to know that our cleanliness put you at ease, and that the location put you right where you wanted to be. Thank you so much for the PERFECT SCORE! Even though you couldn't ask for more, we can...and it's that you come back to visit...

The rooms are a bit small for the amount of people, only in the sense that there isn't much room for your bags. But it was well kept, and in a great location - only about 10 to 15 mins away from the National Mall!

ToffeeCanary: So glad you liked our cleanliness and location. And you do have a valid point about the amount of space in the rooms. If there are many people with luggage laying about, it can be a bit tight. We have found that many people do not use the space under the beds, which can definitely free up the floorspace....

I stayed here for 3 nights staying in a 6 bed dorm. The location is perfect as a base to explore museums and monuments from (although you'll still walk miles everyday, but that's more of a D.C. thing!). The room was clean and the lockers a good size (bring your own lock or buy on from reception). Breakfast is included...

We're just back from a 4 week trip on the East Coast of America and this was by far the best hostel we stayed at. If nothing else they promote a community feel amongst guests that you just don't get in other places. They have volunteers who come in everyday and lead different activities (we went on the Capitol Hill...

Creating an environment where fellow travelers can meet wonderful people from around the world is the reason we do what we do. And our fantastic team of Volunteers are a crucial part of it all. As a solo female traveler, I spent for nights at this hostel. It was a bit harder to find that I had thought but I arrived way past 11pm and I have zero orienteering skills... bunny_deluxe: Thank you for great comments and the PERFECT SCORE! Although I am completely biased, I have to agree that the HI DC Team is an incredible group of talented and engaged people. Our 10-bed dorms are set up in such a way to ensure maximum privacy, which sometimes results in some odd layouts. The result is a nice feeling...

Stayed for spring break. Beds were good, staff was friendly and free breakfast. Loved the fact that it was quite close by to many attractions. My only problem was the bathroom. It was a little on the gross side.

Levicorpyutani1: Thank you for your very honest feedback. It's important to get that -- even though we would like for everyone to have stupendous experiences, every time. Rooms were sufficient. Lockers were quite small, however. Staff were extremely nice and looked after me whenever I needed assistance. Amenities were somewhat outdated (compared to HI International NY). I did think the entry after 11pm, which requires your receipt, as well as your card, was overkill.

Peter M: Thank you for sharing! We're psyched that you felt a connection with us, and that we were able to give you a hand. Yes, some of our spaces -- well, our bathrooms -- could be updated, but they're clean and functional. A bit about the extra security at night. In downtown DC, we think it's very important to...
