This was an amazing hostel to stay in. It's a big hostel but it doesn't really feel it (sometimes a larger hostel can get overwhelming), the kitchen facilities and breakfast were great and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The location is good - a short walk to Chinatown and the Whitehouse, and from there anywhere else in DC...

We stayed here for 3 nights. From the moment we stepped in the door we were made very welcome by the friendly staff. Easy check in and check out. Common rooms are clean and the breakfast is basic but plentiful. All the staff were very approachable and friendly. Location is perfect. If you are on a budget and want clean...

The location was brilliant! Cheap shuttle bus from the airport and within walking distance of all the attractions. Very safe and the staff are very helpful and friendly. Recommend getting cocktails at the Capitol City Brewing bar. Definitely recommend this hostel!

I stayed here for three nights in a 10-bed female dorm and was pleased with the standard of the hostel. I felt safe, beds were clean, and linen/breakfast was provided. Showers and toilet area was also clean and there was never a queue. And even though there were many beds in a room, there was privacy as most of the...

littleteacosies: Thank you so much for the organized and thorough review! That gives a pretty complete view of the hostel. All of us, here, are so happy that you enjoyed your stay and all of the amenities of the hostel. The only thing that I would add is that breakfast offers a bit more variety. True, we offer several cereals...

Let me start by staying that this was my favorite hostel of the five or so I've stayed at throughout the country. This was the first HI hostel I have stayed at and overall I was quite impressed. Check in was easy and the staff at the front desk were happy to help with my questions about parking (although they...

metzler23: I agree with our title! Getting around DC on a bike is a great way to experience our home. With Capital BikeShare just 20 steps from our front door, it's so easy. Your first HI hostel and your FAVORITE hostel in the US? All right! That's music to our ears. We're thrilled that you had a great time meeting...

Let me preface this by saying that I stayed in this hostel in August 2012. It was a while ago so my memory may be a bit foggy and things may be different today. This hostel is in a great location! Centrally located and very easy to find. The rooms were spacious (storage locker inside-bring your own lock). The bathroom...

I spent three nights at HI DC in a ten person dormitory. The hostel is located right in downtown DC near the White House and mall, within walking distance of sights and the metro (though the city can be a pain to walk around- it's not compact). Rooms were clean and accommodating, if unexceptional. Bathrooms were a bit cold and...

Mark-GM, General Manager at HI Washington DC Hostel, responded to this review

dha10001: Thanks for sharing all the tips and kind remarks! On a side note, it is true that DC is quite spread out. Most of the daytime sites are fairly well compact around The National Mall (museums, galleries, monuments, etc.) in the downtown neighborhood -- about a 10 to 15 minute walk from the hostel. For nightlife, the main areas...

I used to stay here when I first backpacked to Washington DC area in mid-1990s. I also stayed there when coming into town for job interview and conferences.
