Hotel's Favourite
I’ve had a rough month of May so far with the InterContinental Hotel Groups. I stayed at two IHG properties: InterContinental Barclay Hotel in NYC and the Kimpton Brice Hotel in Savannah, GA. Those hotels failed my expectations as a Diamond Elite Ambassador Member. The NYC hotel cost-cutting my stay, and the Brice Hotel gave me a pretty messed up room that is way out of its league for a Kimpton. The Kimpton compensated me 50,000 IHG One Points, so I figured I go to D.C to check out the InterContinental Washington D.C - The Wharf. This is the 23rd InterContinental Property I have stepped foot on, and I’ve had a rough record with the InterContinental brand because of the inconsistency in my past 3 stays. I was hoping this InterContinental would make a difference and I think it did. Here’s a review of the InterContinental Hotel Washington D.C. - The Wharf: A day prior to my stay, I decided to go to D.C. because of the points I was given by Kimpton. Had some airline credit to kill, so I wanted to go back to D.C for the second time. My first D.C Hotel was the Kimpton Banneker Hotel, a great stay! I wanted this one to work out well. I was a little confused upon booking. There were several options to co-pay my stay on the IHG APP with points. There was an option to book a Classic Room, King Room, Double Queen, and the Premium Room. I chose the Premium Room because the advertised full-money pay price was nearly double the classic rooms, however, the points required are the same amount. That’s something for the marketing & sales department to keep in mind of. I came to D.C from May 20th to the 21st. It did not say on the APP, but I was upgraded to the Premium King Room with a Balcony and High Floor View of the Potomac River. Upon arrival, I walked into the vibrant lobby, and I was checked in by Luis at the Front Desk. He kindly got me settled in with a Room Key and incidental deposit in as little as 3 minutes. He briefed me on how the room I stayed in which was triple-level upgraded and gave me a menu to the Moon Rabbit on-site restaurant. I was assigned Room 918. Waiting for me is a personalized handwritten Welcome Letter from the Hotel’s General Manager Chris Lee and his contact card. It’s a nice touch from the Upper Management. I haven’t seen many personalized touches since I was abroad at another InterContinental. The Premium King Room w/ Balcony and Upper-Level River View has many amenities and furniture that make this room great. You have a King Bed with Pillows that cover the entire width of the bed (something you don’t see much nowadays). You have a TV, marble desk, cabinet, chair + ottoman, massive closet, USB power ports, artworks, a bathroom with a separate shower and tub armed with Zenology Shower Amenities, a 5 square foot balcony, and a view of the Wharf, Potomac River, Pentagon, and Ronald Reagan National Airport. There is a waterfront inspired designs in the hallways, with brightly lit designs inside the rooms with fine photography and a rough of D.C. I would say it’s worth the 31K points + $152 to spend for the stay, but I’m not sure if it’s worth the full price. There were some issues with the room, however. The cabinet that opens the access to the beverage glass cups had a disconnected hinge, which had to be screwed back in. Thankfully the nice, quick, and professional engineer Abraham got the job done after what seemed like a busy day for him after 3 hours of waiting. Service seemed to be quite slow. I waited an hour and called twice for a bathrobe. That was a stark contrast to the 10 minutes it took to get a dental kit and a pair of slippers. Housekeeping certainly had some hits and misses. Whilst the pillows were free of any hair, the marble and windows were spotless, and the bathroom was generally well cleaned, there was an issue with the carpet. There were NAIL CLIPPINGS found beneath the bedside table, which was spottable to my naked eyes. It looked like it was there for quite a while. Yikes! Now the response to that was well received. I called Luis, and he got the nail clippings cleaned up by the housekeeper Claudia. In compensation for the nail clipping mishap, I was given 10K bonus points and an extra $30 to the ambassador food credit. I used the $50 I had to get myself breakfast at the on-site restaurant Moon Rabbit. Moon Rabbit is no ordinary restaurant compared to the many American contemporary dining restaurants I have seen in other InterContinental hotels. This is a restaurant that is known for modern fusion foods between America and Vietnam, and the menu is curated by award-winning chef Kevin Tien. Everything has a touch of Vietnam when you look at the menu, even on the breakfast menu. I had to give the Com Tam L.A. Style Short Ribs a try. It’s sweet and savory short ribs cooked Korean style, garlic rice, a fried egg, pickled bok choy & cucumbers, lettuce, and a Vietnamese Nuoc Cham (the similar sauce used for Spring Rolls in a Vietnamese restaurant). That is a fulfilling yet adventurous breakfast that definitely hits the spot when it comes to needing a meal that helps fuel up a busy day of walking around D.C. Selban was my server, and he was great along with the host. It was such a lovely dining experience. One thing I like to note and appreciate is that I got to have interactive service when walking in and out of the property. The bellman is always there to open the door and greet you in or out, which is something not seen in many of the InterContinentals I have been to in the US, which is quite ridiculous that we don’t get to see that level of service in hotels much more pricey than that. The small details really made me appreciate this hotel. Also, the fact that my key did not deactivate after standard check-out time on departure day to enforce my 4 PM Guaranteed late checkout certainly is appreciated. In the past, I had to deal with ID checks at InterContinental hotels just to even get back to my room that was still during my contracted lease. I was checked out by both Luis and the Assistant Front Desk Manager Ercan. Ercan checked in on how my stay was, which was very appreciative. Both took in my comments about the hotel well and addressed the issues I had during my stay. I felt taken care of when it came to the front desk. Ercan and Luis are some of the better front desk people I have seen at the InterContinental, which was very refreshing to have after going through many less enthusiastic yet alone less professional or friendly desk agents at the InterContinental brand. Overall, not bad for $152 + 31K IHG One point. In fact, my stay was excellent given the great room and good service in this hotel. Based on the prices, I wouldn’t come back by paying in full. But I would certainly come back using the same way I paid through this hotel. I have not had an on-par InterContinental or Kimpton stay in the past two months with the IHG brand. I’m very glad I got a refresher from the InterContinental at the Wharf. Bear in mind, that this is still a new hotel that’s barely 5 years old. It’s still as modern as it gets and I would more than willing to come back to this hotel on my next trip to D.C, given that there will be improvements with more punctual amenity service and the cleanliness of my room! Of all the 23 InterContinental hotels I have visited, this one ranks #7 for me. Pretty good ranked placement score for me on my ranking list.

We stayed at the InterContinental of the Wharf in DC for a week and they are superb in service. A beautiful hotel with amazing views of the water. Ridi, Aries and Stowkow at the concierge were so kind. Always smiling and offering assistance to make sure our stay was first class. I enjoyed them calling us by name and inquiring about our stay. Ridi always had a smile and enjoyed conversing with my husband each day. My husband truly enjoyed seeing him working the front of the hotel! We highly recommend staying here as we will return!

Took a short weekend getaway and the place is wonderful. The hotel premises is in such a unique and fun location, smack in the middle of the DC Wharf. The hotel is breautifully and tastefully decorated at almost every angle. In particular the room - just a basic standard room without the direct river view - was stunning and well appointed. The restaurant has good food (separate review - Moon Rabbit) and serves the in-room dining as well. The staff was on point - always helpful and friendly. So why 4/5? Two pet peeves. First, it was a (semi-romantic) weekend getaway and we went into order to sit poolside without realizing just how tiny the pool was and that there were so few loungers that we basically sat in a chair and then ended up leaving (the pool itself is quite small but they would have been better served to have an infinity pool on the edge and create a bigger deck space). The other is that the weekend crowd was so incredibly noisy and there was no way to curb the sound, but that was expected. Either way - nice hotel to stay in during the week. I especially suggest being able to straddle a Monday when the Wharf is almost empty and the hotel so very quiet.
