My friend and I recently walked the Queen Charlotte track and the Portage Resort Hotel was our third nights accommodation. After reading the reviews we were unsure of what to expect. After a long days walk in temperatures of over 30 we arrived tired, not too impressed to find our bags had not been taken to our room as the...

I agree with many of the other reviewers that The Portage is in need of some attention. The location can't be faulted but the resort is falling into a state of disrepair - from small things like cobwebs on the verandah, to larger things like the closed and scruffy coffee shop. This place could be first class if only it...

After a day walking, this is an ideal space to have a lie down and a cup of tea,for persons of a certain age .I just went to the bar.The food is excellant as is the service .OK its Auckland prices + probably ( I dont eat in 5 star restaurants there). But we are a captive audience and why worry about...

Very nice rooms for being in a rather inaccessible location and the dinner was absolutely outstanding -- fresh local fish beautifully prepared with fresh veggies. Deserts were 5-star too. Quiet sanctuary during a ride on the Track but a daunting uphill back up to the Track in the morning. Walkers can get a shuttle but we made the trek on...

We stayed 2 nights in a kowhai lodge room ( $275 per night). This place is peaceful and quiet. Yes the rooms and presentation of the resort could do with a tidy up but that's a small part as the beautiful view is distracting. We had two very hot days and was a bit disappointed with the lack of shade...

We had stayed here 7 years ago as part of the Queen Charlotte Track and it was brilliant, amazing views and the resort was immaculate and vibrant with very professional staff. We were so keen to return when we had the chance but we were so disappointed to find it tired and in need of tlc particularly with the gardens...

Our fond memories of a lovely stay we had 7 years ago has been shattered. I suspect poor management. The food we had in the restaurant was good, however it wasn't value for money. Very limited unchanging menu, only one single pasta option for vegetarians. We had a hot and sunny day, and there was no shade, no parasol umbrellas,...

I would strongly recommend to avoid this place. With great expectations, you get disappointed very fast. The owner has chosen a management team that shouldn't run a lodge at such a great location. Unqualified staff in general.

Stayed 2 nights and really enjoyed the peace and quiet. Room with a private deck and fantastic views. Dined both nights small menu but good quality. Ignore the reviewers that say it's over priced. Its not cheap either but very enjoyable and such a lovely setting.

Having read some reviews, I prepared for the worst. But I actually had a very nice stay! The room I was in (39), was modern, new, spacious and comfortable. Food was a bit expensive, true, but I figure the costs of running such a remote hotel are too. I didn't felt being taking advantage of at all. There were some...
