Nice staff and a decent location, but not really a 4* experience. Rooms are ok, but no milk to go with your hot drinks & the shower head was leaking. In particular, the breakfast was very poor. No fresh juice, mainly processed food, no toast and all hot drinks from a vending machine. We wouldn't return.

Stayed at this hotel for 4 nights Thursday to Sunday. It’s a 30min walk from the main Riga bus station which when carrying even a small luggage bag is actually quite a trek. It sits on a street with nothing else tourist on it, and I’d say is quite out the way for me personally. It is on the complete opposite side of where all the tourist attractions and the old town actually are. The hotel itself is extremely old fashioned, the decor is very very dated and dark, and hallways going to the room were a bit smelly. This hotel was stated as 4* when we booked, however I definitely wouldn’t rate this as 4*

Part of a chain, the Gertrude is a classic European interior hotel with a modern lobby. It claimed in its brochure to be 20 minutes walk from Old Riga, and its in-house film claimed 15 minutes. Unfortunately, with light winter snow, we found it to be closer to 45 minutes. We can assign points for having a 24hr desk, but a point off when said desk gives us two room cards, only one of which works, and another off when staff ignore morning greetings from clients. Points for fully equipped desk and chair, point off if the room is so small you can’t sit at the desk and open the bathroom door. Definite points for a real bath, something when you are walking everywhere is much appreciated. Points off for two single mattresses in a double bed. Breakfast is included, and of massive importance to my enjoyment of a hotel. We enjoyed it, looked forward to it, but it could have been excellent, but we were let down in small ways. They refilled the buffet at 10:30, which is amazing, but there was definitely a reduction in quality to the food served before nine. Those eggs were watery and pretty tasteless, and the pastries, which earlier in the day were impressively delicious, were much colder and harder. However, serving breakfast until 11 everyday is worth several points. The balancing act continued with only two juices, but both were excellent. There was a coffee grinder, choices of tea, a full European breakfast, cereals, sausages of a sort, but the bacon, if you could find it, was perfect. All in all, a huge selection for most palates with a few let-downs. I would love to give them 5 stars but this would imply the food was excellent, and it simply wasn’t. With a better room, friendlier staff and a few upgrades on the breakfast, I’d be giving them five stars easily. Depending on the price paid, and the room received, others might give them a higher rating.

While booking this hotel, the online description and photos of this hotel made us think that we discovered a good bargain. But the reality is that the rooms where we stayed were quite outdated and lacking basic maintenance. We were disappointed. Examples of that were the shower difficult to switch on (required considerable strength), bathroom blinds were broken (impossible to shield from outside vision) and the aircondition was noisy (disturbing the overall night sleep). The breakfast was adequate, but extremely limited gluten-free and lactose-free choices. The parking arrangement was relatively far, but during the night it is possible to park for free on the street next to hotel. Finally, the hotel was clean and location to the city center was good

Family-friend hotel with nice location. Family room was big enough for travelling with two kids. BUT the room was so smelly and air kinda humid. Even towels didn’t dry. There was two air conditioners in the room which was nice but they didn’t help the smell. Bathroom was big but there was no space to put cosmetics down and no place to hang a hand towel. Bathtub with a shower curtain what I though was disgusting. Breakfast was ok enough.

It has been first time we visited Gertrude since pandemia started (stayed several times in previous years) - just to realize some nice things became history... Welcome compliments such as choсolates and little bottles of Latvian sparkling wine are no longer present in the room and no sparkling wine is served for breakfast any more. There was no guest questionnaire in the room (I remember filling it in every time in the past) - does that mean hotel is no longer interested in guest's opinion? When I called to inform that we were going to check-in around 10 pm after a long drive and asked about places with kitchen opened till late in the hotel vicinity a woman on the phone told me that reception knows everything and should help. Still I googled some info myself and when we arrived asked only to show the shortest way to that barbeque bar on a map. However, the receptionist had no idea about the place I mentioned although I think it should be useful for her to know and be able to give advice to guests. But most disapplointing was the fact that I e-mailed in advance about my partner's birthday on the day of check-in and front office replied that they "will take into account information about the birthday of one of the guests" - but nothing happened. Just a little attention would have been enough but they simply forgot or disregarded my request (and again the receptionist could have saved the situation as she was filling in his passport details and must have seen his birth date - but alas). Gertrude is not a huge and superbusy hotel with lots of tourists at the same time - that's why we've been always choosing it to feel more cosy and attentive atmosphere - but it was no longer so.

First of all the rooms are dark, small and kinda smelly, the breakfast was crowded even tho we had to book a 30min window for breakfast. The real problem was the reception who lost my laundry at first and I spent whole morning going up and down asking where it was even tho I left it to them for 3 days. And they would tell come back later come back later. Right before my check out I got thankfully got it back. Later on when checking out they asked me to pay money for late check out. The problem is my room was paid for until 31st, and I checked out on 27th. How is that late check out?? I asked them to charge the company and they agreed. Later they asked me to pay for laundry which is again is supposed to be charged on the company but they refused. I had to call my employer so they can contact other company which pays for the room, to contact the hotel and confirm that they pay. The company contacted them and informed that they pay. The receptionist hung up the phone and asked me to contact the company and ask for email approval because phone approval was not enough. SHE WAS ON THE PHONE A SECOND AGO AND DIDNT CONSIDER TO ASK THEM HERSELF. I told her that I have no contact with the company and cannot talk to them, but the hotel has an agreement with the company so she is much more competent to contact them. Then again my employer called her and agreed to check me out without payment approval so I can have my flight and the approval will come in 10minutes. She only agreed to do it after getting my credit card information. The lady insisted on me paying for the laundry and bringing receipt to the company, so I can get reimbursed. I told her at least five times that it’s not how it works in my company. All in all absolutely terrible communication on behalf of the hotel, zero problem solving skills and no willingness to listen to what I say. Hopefully never again.

I arrived almost an hour early to drop my things to baggage room, only to find out my room was ready! The hotel is housed in a late 1800s building, that seems to be built in many stages, since there are differences in levels at different wings, but this only adds personality. The double room I stayed in was well cleaned and modern, with classic furnishings. To my surprise I had a bath AND a shower. View was to opposite wing of the hotel, which I didn't mind since it would filter out any noise that would come from the street. The air conditioner was a lovely thing to have, since windows were towards east, and the room was at the southeast corner with sunny weather warming up the room most of the day. I felt very welcomed from the very first moment, and I'd certainly visit again.

Housed in an old building, so full of character but with modern amenities. Exceptional service at reception.. let down by the breakfast. 4 star hotel with a 2 star breakfast. This is real Riga, check out the the local bars and restaurants.

This hotel was just lovely. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Rooms are restaurated with quality and respecting the original. We enjoyed this hotel very much. Every place is clean. The hotel is situated well. Everything is close but still quiet. Restaurant are close by and there are huge amount of them To choose. And of course if you love shopping, you surely are In a walking distance. We truly recommend this hotel.
