Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This hotel is a definite time capsule back to the end of 90-s, and as such might even be considered lovely. Still, it is very much understaffed, resulting in a hostel-like atmosphere (neglected reception area, staff slowly appears only after phonecall etc). Breakfast was tasty, although with limited choices.
There is a huge unused potential in this place!

Nice quiet hotel at city center. It situated between city hall and university. Old friendly couple was taking care of us, room had a good view to hill nearby, breakfast was served to the room and there was a safe parkingarea. House with a long history!

After spending three days trying to confirm our reservation (they would not return our emails nor phone us) we finally arrived at the hotel to a luke-warm reception... I seriously think the hotel was closed for the season, but they were happy to open the hotel for a couple of nights, given we decided to book a premium room.

Service was pretty woeful - usual Soviet-style grumbling efficiency. Breakfasts were a distaster - I am sure they served up the same leftovers day after day. Staff seemed to help themselves to various pastries and coffee while we were dining and thought nothing of it (perhaps they were bored, given we were the only guests!)

Parking was a plus - we had a rental car, so the few spots out the back for guests were a bonus for us.

I'd seriously consider the Barklay Hotel nearby. We payed top dollar for our room and I can't say it was really worth it, given the whole experience.

An AMEX credit card is not valid, although it is clearly written in Estonian that all credit cards, including AMEX, are valid. Upon check-in, immediate payment was required for the entire time, I have never seen anything like it before. But I realized afterwards why, the whole hotel is run by only two people and no one is usually seen at the reception. in three days there was a older woman there, who is reportedly the owner. Customer service was arrogant, we didn’t dare ask anything, we just thought we would hopefully get out of here quickly. He did try to be friendly, but he always seemed to be defensive. No wonder, because the furniture, carpet and mattresses must have been from 1990. The armchair looked dirty, we didn’t dare sit there. There were only two small tired, really uncomfortable pillows in the bed, two more were asked and we got similar little bumps. The faucet gets water really slowly, the shower faucet leaks. The toilet bowl sways. The breakfast room was really cold, probably about 10 degrees. The hotel needs renovation and decent customer service since I was born in Tartu, so this kind of hotel in the center is a huge shame. I recommend Lydia Hotel, which is next door.

This is a great location for a hotel and has lots of potential, but unfortunately it is run very badly. The staff is kind of non existent and the staff that is there like reception should be sent back to 1975 when the kind of arrogant and unhelpful attitude was ok. This old woman working there is like something out of a movie. Does not welcome you, is completely disinterested in you and then expects the visitors do her job for her. Upon check in she told is that we have a wrong credit card (the contactless kind that 90% of people use these days) and that we should go and get some cash instead. When I told her that there is nothing wrong with the card and she should get a new terminal from the bank she just sulked there. When I refused to go to find cash for her she finally " found" a solution. She went to the back room somewhere and processed the payment there. Which means she well knew how to solve the issue already before starting to argue with me. So it is basically your problem as a client to solve issues for her. Same thing happened to a client before me when he wanted to know if the windows of his room faced the square. She only said that if you want that you must pay 450 euros. (??!) She acted as if the client wanted a free upgrade when probably all he wanted to know was if the room is quiet or not cause there was a concert at the town hall square. Anyway he attitude is by far the worst I have seen since Soviet time and she has no business working in the service industry. To top it all of, when I asked for her name in the end of this check in. She just hissed that she is not obligated to give out this information.... Hmmmm Ok

This hotel advertises airconditioning. The temperature was around 30 and the window could only be tilted open slightly. However when I persuaded the receptionist to turn on the air-con (which was ineffective in any case) the hotel manager ordered it to be turned off. When I complained by telephone to the manager (she refused to meet me) I was abused and treated as though it was my fault the room was uninhabitable. I can only imagine she was a graduate of a hospitality school for managing a Soviet gulag.

Stayed here on a work trip and had been expecting the worst after reading reviews. In fact it was one of the most comfortable hotels I have stayed in. Pillows and matresses were blissfully comfortable and the bathroom was absolutely enormous. Common areas were also of a high quality.
Only slight disappointment was the quality of the Estonian cuisine at breakfast, e.g. porridge made with water and reconstituted scrambled egg! But the bread was good.
In terms of value for money, the accommodation was really excellent.

If you don't have any requirements at all on service this is an exciting hotel to stay at. First of all, there is never anyone in the reception. An elderly couple, probably the owners have put a phone in the reception with a number to call if you want service. Which they don't always answer of course. After agreeing on a price making the reservations the older lady tried to change this on the day of payment. After day two they stopped changing towels in the bathroom. You are not allowed to bring guests into the hotel after 20:00 and after 22:00 the door is closed and by pressing a door bell an even older lady that sleeps on the bottom floor comes open the door. I advice you to not support this kind of behaviour.

If I should judge by the lady at the reception received us, I think one dot over five would be too much: a tiger would have been more friendly (apart the behaviour, quite rude, she asked to be payed literally before we had carried our luggage in, and the amount requested has been a little more than the one indicated in our reservation with Booking.com).Beside that the room was spacious and breakfast excellent. Wifi connection in the room was very weak. Shower without a base: if you get one the floor will be wet. Quite strange in a so called 'four stars' hotel. Perfect the position. I mark 3 dots, but correct would be 2 and half.
