Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Amazing small, historical hotel right in the heart of Tallin. The host and his team were brilliant, so attentive and helpful with suggested things to do. Our room was large and lovely and warm considering it was -18 outside. The breakfast was plentiful and varied and the daily private use of the sauna was a welcome addition after a day out in the cold. The sauna was included in the price and definitely worth using.

We visited Tallinn for the Christmas market. The market was a 60 second walk from the hotel. The best part of the hotel was the bed. So, so comfortable. Would stay permanently for the bed alone. Staff very helpful, food and ambience just great. A good find in a lovely city. Would love to see Tallinn in summer next time...

Booked for 3 nights 3-6 November , only wanted a bed as when we are on our many trips around the globe we don’t spend any longer than necessary in our room( which was difficult as the bed was sooooo comfy )went for the budget room and it had just what we required. Great shower, did wet the floor as only a flimsy curtain, Nespresso coffee machine ,extra heater ( not needed as mild ) slippers and robes provided Did not book breakfast as we always stay out late and are late risers , did on one night leave out key in the door( goes with the late nights I guess ) went to reception in the morning and they had taken it out of our door for security concerns as there was a large group of lads from Helsinki in and were only preventing any issues, so great service, If you are after a hotel bang in the center this is the one for you , they do have a lot of superior rooms if that’s what you need , highly recommend All three staff members we encountered

Great location, great ambience, comfortable and well appointed room, lots of choice on the breakfast menu. What really sets this hotel apart is the staff. I had a problem with my passport (mislaid it) and Jonathan in particular went to great lengths to help me. The kindness and support offered was amazing. This hotel will be my first choice when I return to Tallinn.

Wonderful old hotel in old town and our reception person was so helpful. Breakfast was wonderful and made to order and the coffee superb. Very centrally located. Room was large and had a sauna inside our bathrooms. Glorious.

Very good location in the center. We got a room which was not really nice in the beginning but we could change easily and got a good room. The breakfast is ok but could be better (orange juice is a cheap one). Very nice staff at the reception who are eager to help.

We enjoyed our stay at the Merchants House very much. The hotel has so much character and is in a fantastic location just round the corner from the main square. Jonathan was very helpful and kindly held over our booking for 2 years due to covid cancellation. We hope to return to Tallinn very soon and would love to stay in the Merchant's House again.

My wife and I were walking through Old Town Tallinn looking for a local beer when we saw two guys standing outside of a closed beer house sipping a pint. I asked where they got the beer and one said right there at The Merchant House. His name is Jonathan and he owns the place. He spent years living in and studying Russia and the region as a young man. He took the time to sit with us and tell us about the history of Tallinn, Old Town and how the region was during Russia's influence and how it has thrived since obtaining independence and sovereignty. He drew directions on our map to Tallinn's oldest pub, Hell Hunt, a place to get a homemade snack and pickle at Draakon as well as directions to the areas largest tap house outside of the Old Town section. The time he spent with us really meant a lot and we will definitely stay there when we make our way back. Great place and better people.

The hotel has a great location; within Tallinn’s Old Town and a matter of seconds’ walk from Town Hall Square. The staff, in particular Jonathan, were very friendly and helpful, providing invaluable advice and tips about things to do in Tallinn, places to eat and drink and getting around. A recommended hotel!

We've just finished a four night stay in this historic hotel in Tallinn old town centre. It's just a stones throw from the town square, with all it's restaurants and bars, yet solid medieval engineering means it's quiet and peaceful inside. The management, Jonathon and Jason, could not have been more helpful. The recommendations on where to visit, dine and drink were superb, garnered from many years as expats in the town. My wife could not be more impressed with the breakfast, great continental and any requests all cooked to order. Clean, tidy, friendly and a comfy bed, what more could you want. We'll be back.
