We were looking for traditional slovakian food and found it at this KOLIBA. It was delicious and very nicely served . The service was rapid and the staff as professional as friendly. We were even accomodated with a smaller portion on one hand and a personal combination of two dishes on the other hand. We went there twice and can recommand this place.
Very spacious rooms, nice bathrooms, however, soap dispenser was broken. Beautiful view of mountain tops right from the windows. 5 minute walk to cable car going to Hriebenok and Lomnicky Stit. Breakfast was very good: meats, cheese, veggies, grains fruits and home made salads. We had lunch at the restaurant and it was good quality traditional Slovakian food: pig leg, deer gulash (which you cannot get in States), cabbage soup, etc. On the weekend there was traditional Slovakian live music there. Koliba is located a little bit farther from other hotels, across rail road so there was no crowd of tourists walking back and forth in front of this penzion.
A little strange place were there is no kettle in the room, so you are unable to have a hot drink before you hit the trails early in the morning. Breakfast starts at 8am so this doesn't help. The person who checked us in, a lovely blond lady, explained all the house rules, and could not be more helpful even if she tried. A very odd room service, only bed was remade, even so made it myself before I left, bathroom as untouched, so were the glassed and bins... If you are a quest there be prepared to pay 0.50€ to use the toilet downstairs, but apparently this is very common in Slovakia. Overall flt a bit in the way and not welcome at all, so left one day early.
Passing through the town looking for a restaurant with local food and beverages we found Restaurant Penzión Koliba in Stary Smokovec. It was late lunch and restaurant was empty. We were group of two adults and four children. We didn´t wait long time for our orders. We had Cabbage soup with sausage and two Tatra plates for two persons. It was enough food for the group as we were. Everything was tasty, well prepared and fresh. Local beer Steiger was draft properly and really tasty. Interior of the restaurant is furnitured in regional slovak willage design and has quiet atmosphere. We were satisfied and I can recommend this place.
First trip to the Tatras and really pleased with this Penzion. The location is great, walking distance from the caves and a short bus ride form Lomnicky Stit, one of the highest mountains in the area with breathtaking scenery. The rooms in the Penzion are simple but comfortable, immaculately clean and some if not all have a balcony. The food is delicious, service is prompt and the staff are very polite and helpful. We will defiantly stay here again.
Quick and friendly, nice dressed (traditional) staff. Very good and fresh food. Slovak cuisine. Nice decorated and warm and clean interior. Really good location. Very good service. I recommend it for short break or for long lunch/dinner too.
High Tatras are gorgeous. But honestly... not all places provide the services at the high level. This place is one of the best ones. I have not tried accommodation, only restaurant. I practically do not go to any other restaurant in Smokovec because this is a tested quality. It is a stylish place, they have very nice selection of food, friendly waiters (men only!), unique aperitif (burning Tatra tea) and reasonable prices. I only visited restaurant on Saturday and had to wait for a table (it proves the place is really popular), there was a live Gypsy music. I always went there with different group of people and they all confirmed this places is really good for food and for atmosphere. I have no doubts their accommodation will follow the same quality.
