_This trip was in around 2006 - trip advisor didn't allow me to select that_ When you enter Bratislava by train its very un-nerving, because you come past an endless sea of forbidding tower blocks, so I was already on edge when I arrived. We got a taxi (provided by the hostel as I recall). An ebullient Aussie backpacker cheerfully told me this was the _worst_ hostel and my fears grew. On arriving I found the place to be essentially run by 18 year old stoned students who were hanging out in a kind of common room with guests. They had very little idea or care for who I was I was here, and I was slung a key. Onward and upward, the first floor of this place that looks very like a prison I noticed the padded doors... further up, my floor didn't have padded doors, but I passed a room in which a huge gang of skinheaded Russians were screaming and shouting, all horrendously drunk by the looks of them and this was early afternoon. It was with great joy I realised my room was only sharing with one other person. They weren't around at the moment and so I left to explore the city. Coming back to my bunk that night (and I was pretty terrified about who my bunk mate might be), I was surprised to find she was a dainty little Japanese girl. She spoke very little english, but we had a sort of conversation after which she told me with a serious look on her face, "This place isn't safe." I woke up in the night, thirsty and so went to get some of the water from a shared bathroom (that tastes awful). I was very touched to find she had locked us in. She would rather lock herself in the room with a complete stranger than leave it open to what was outside. In the morning she had gone and I had the place to myself for the next couple of days. It was over those couple of days that i found the place had a charm to it once you got over your fears, and I met some interesting people including a very eccentric trio who were travelling to some far off place as part of a rally where the max you could spend was £500 on your car. I left the place having enjoyed it overall, despite being a bit of bath of fire. Puts hairs on your chest ;)

Rooms smaller than a rabbitcave (5 m2) with small hard dirty beds, too much noice, like a school building with too small rooms, dirty shared badrooms, filthy atmorphere... Too expensive for what you get...

What can I say except DO NOT STAY AT THE ORANGE HOSTEL IN BRATISLAVA. I was taken in by the glossy leaflet and charming girls in the station which are both designed to take advantage of tourists and travellers alike. It's not so much the dire environment (the place is like a borstal, caged doors, dirty shared showers and toilets that frankly should NEVER be witnessed by human beings) but more the fact that they clearly let ANYONE in. Fortunately for me, after a day looking round the city I returned for a rest and after 15 minutes in my 'cell' the noise of the neanderthal occupants screaming and shouting down the corridors was quite enough and I packed my bag and left in search of a hotel. I sincerely hope I never have to endure such an horrific experience again!
