The Hotel Lux looks like a communist era building, with little landscaping and few amenities in Banska Bystrica (BB). It is an easy 500 m walk from the bus station, if you arrive in BB by bus. As with other central europe locations, it does not have air conditioning. Check in was pleasant and fast, the clerks spoke excellent English. Our rooms (3 doubles) were on the 12th floor facing the old town and the 1945 Uprising memorial--it was a lovely view! The carpeting in the rooms is from the 70's but the rest of the room was fine--furnished in Danish style and the beds were clean and comfortable. The balcony was nice to walk out on to watch the sunset. The bathroom was small but adequate, with a handheld shower. A single small (and I mean small) piece of soap was the only tolietry amentity in the room. Towels were the quality of a Motel 6. Overall, the room was clean, safe and relatively comfortable, with dated furnishings and lack of amenities we noted in other hotels in central Europe. Try to get a Slovak friend or relative to make the reservation if you can--it cost us 1329skk per room per night ($50) instead of the 70 euros it would have if we had made the reservations ourselves or through a travel agent. Banska Bystrica was lovely, we spend two days there and next time will try to spend more time in the area. Go to Slovakia before they adopt the Euro! It's very inexpensive!

Business brought me to this hotel recently for one night. It was conveniently located to get to local restaurants and bars. It's close to a park where people do a lot of socializing in the hotter summer months. The hotel is very clean and well kept. The A/C could do with an upgrade but on the whole very comfortable stay. Staff are very professional and multi lingual which is always a bonus when travelling. It's now a contender for future business trips to the region as pricing, food on offer, staff & location are all positives.

Located on a square where there used to be a statue of Lenin. The square has never recovered after the statue's removal but there is great view to the Slovak Uprising Museum.
The lobby and the common areas look fine - the ladies at reception were very friendly and efficient. We stayed in a family room which at a price of 65 euros incl breakfast was good value.

The room itself was not in great state even though it had obviously been refurbished since the Communist days. All the furnishings are threadbare and the bathroom could do with a make-over.

A functional choice in a lovely city.

This is my 2nd stay here ( I am currently in the hotel), purely because I have some work commitments very close by, but the lack of viable alternatives in BB makes this place the only real choice, and I think they know it.

Rooms are reasonable but hard beds, and truly awful pillows, they have to firmness in them at all!

Water pressue is variable from room to room...

TV is tiny (14in), but then there is no english tv channels so useless anyway. I don't think I've ever stayed in a hotel which doesn't have a news channel in English!

This hotel has a lot of faults but the breakfast service is the worst. The staff aren't interested in serving the customers, all they want to do is clear tables and set up for lunch, even at 8:30am.

I have had to sit at an unclean table as half the tables are reserved for lunch at 8:45am! Then go and take cutlery from other tables as the staff can't be bothered to reset the table once they've cleared it, and prefer to stand and talk to each other.

Breakfast should be served till 10am. I arrived one morning at 9am and it had been cleared away, and the lack of english among the staff rendered a complaint pointless.

Thankfully I'm leaving in the next couple of days and hopefully never returning.

The only positives, the Internet connection in business rooms is good and a total lifesaver!

Hotel should be closed during renovation. No air conditioning. Keeping the windows open meant those in adjoining room could enter ours via balcony. We have stayed in much better hotels in Slovakia for much less money.

Hotel, built a decades ago, has a big potential due to its location. building and facilities are really out of present, everything looks so old, faded, shabby and really need to be renew. Rooms are very simple, same with the common areas.
But to be honest I have to say their staff is very kind, attentive and smiling - something what you can not see often in Slovakia. Breakfast with good and wide choice are another positive.
I stayed here just because I had to.
Shame they do not have a money to update their rooms and common areas.

Stayed one night during a tour of Europe. We booked the Economy Double (perhaps some of the other reviewers took the more expensive rooms) - it was very grim. Metal window frames with paint peeling off. We were on the 10th floor and the balcony had a definite 'sag' and felt unsafe. Note in our room told us to lock ourselves in at night - which we found rather scary. To be fair, staff were pleasant and helpful. Breakfast one of the worst we experienced on a three week tour (bread rolls dry, jam watery and almost tasteless). Really rather grim compared to gorgeous photos on their website.

High rise building, making it very easy to find! The hotel part of the building is served by a glass lift on the outside of the building. The hotel is situated in a park next door to a roller-blade circuit. It is some walk from both the station in one direction and the town centre in the other. The hotel’s orientation made the rooms uncomfortably hot at the time of our visit. There is no air conditioning. Rooms on one side receive the morning sun and those on the other the afternoon sun. You need to have your curtains drawn all day to keep the sun out. We managed to change room to the morning sun side on the grounds that it would have all day to cool down until we returned in the late afternoon/evening. Breakfast was adequate but nothing special. The orange juice out of the machine was more like diluted orange cordial rather than fresh juice.

Our overall experience at Hotel Lux was quite good. Service was very good both at check in and while we were staying there. The location is great--views of the surrounding area are very nice the location is perfect: just a few minutes away from the central square but outside of it so that the undesired noise level is nearly zero for a room facing the park. The views from the rooms facing the park and museum are fantastic. The rooms are a nice size--plenty of room for two people and luggage. They are somewhat plain but functional which was fine. The only issue was that our room had a door frame to the bathroom that was falling off. It just needed a few nails or screws but any housekeeping person would have grabbed that frame at some time and found that it was not attached so I'm surprised it hadn't been fixed. Not big enough of an issue for us to change rooms.

Rooms are basic 3-star, good breakfast, and helpful, friendly staff. The hotel is well located, a short walk to the Town Square, the bus and train stations, and the National Uprising Museum. The hotel is undergoing some construction, so there can be some noise at times, and the windows could not be opened.
