Travellers' Choice
Hévíz is Hungary’s oldest and best-known spa town, famous for having the world’s largest biologically active, natural thermal lake. Danubius Health Spa Resort Aqua – just a short walk from the lake – has everything you need for the perfect wellness break. The hotel’s spa complex has a leisure pool and a bath fed by water from its own spring, and most of our wellness and health treatments use thermal water and Hévíz mud. But the pampering doesn’t end there, for the Aqua Hotel is the first all-inclusive hotel in Hévíz. Discover for yourself the pleasures of an all-inclusive summer holiday in Hungary, from wallowing in warm water to eating and drinking to your heart’s content. Even those with children are guaranteed some relaxing time to themselves; our child-friendly hotel has plenty to occupy the kids, from fun pools and a playroom to supervised entertainment programmes.

This hotel really hates children families. Your child is not welcome there. Spa and sauna is only for old people. Old people are nice. Spa staff was very rude to us. One older staff member shouted us and came to see naked people on sauna. We were afraid.

Dear "35helij" Thank you for your review, and for staying at us. I am really sorry for the inconvenience you experienced, and allow me to answer for these issues. We indeed have child-friendly services, 2 indoor kids' pool among them, but the sauna and the thermal pools are advised for adults only. The sauna order is being divided among our saunas, one is allowed for use in bathing suit ("textile sauna"), the others are for naked use. I apologize for the behavior or our colleagues; I forwarded your review to the spa manager for further consideration and to take the appropriate measures. Thank you again for sharing your experiences with us and thus helping to better our services. Sincerely: Peter Nagy, E-commerce manager

We just wanted to have a nice SPA vacation and studied the alternatives in Europe. We knew nothing about Heviz or the natural thermal lake. Heviz appeared up and so we decided. Very improved soviet time of hotel but in excellent and modern condition. The package was all inclusice and the hotel has Chaine de Rotisseur label and I agree that the food was highly variated and tasty. During the 1 week time we spent the kitchen made every day something special. And the SPA services were very good. A consultation with a doctor and he made recommendation which you might like. The SPA services were very good and affordable compared to standar European prices. The room on the best 7th floor was new but could be some m2 bigger but on the other hand you just sleep in the room. I do recomment and specially for Finnish fellows.

Stayed 2 nights, and were very satisfied with all: Facilities, location, parking (very reasonably priced), and, above all, the friendliness of the staff (room cleaning could have been a little more thorough, but never mind). Efficient front desk. Large sized restaurant can get very busy, but always features a good choice of food, and highly attentive service. Our room was not international 4 star standard, but I don't go to Hungary to have the latest appliances and gadgets.

It's shorter to list what was ok than what wasn't, so i'll start there. Three out of ten people from personal we dealt with were nice: One in reception (senior man), one for booking spa services, and a cleaning lady. The natural area/location where the hotel is is good. The salt cave experience was nice, and the weather was great but that's not thanks to the hotel. Now what was disappointing, starting with the elevators, 2 for 7 floors, no guests stairs, we were on the 1st floor and it was painful. The room, like from the 1970s. Small, old furniture, and barely ok, not properly lit bathroom. It barely met the 4-stars standards (in my opinion it should be 3). And the room wasn't the worst. The most disappointing of all is the food situation. I'm astonished by other reviews. I feel betrayed by my other fellow human beings. What standards do we have on food from a 4 stars?? The all inclusive is a scheme to reuse bread and cakes from breakfast/lunch, with the perk of having coffee and juice without having to pay extra for it. That's all. My vegan girlfriend had to eat salad pretty much in every meal, and that's all. Even bread had milk in some cases! By i'm not vegan and I barely had anything interesting to eat, or different, and from what I chose, the quality was barely 3 stars. I've been in guesthouses in Austria with better food for around 10 guests max. Then on top of that, bread by lunch is already dried out, imagine at dinner. 85% of the food was the same from lunch to dinner and from one day to another. Watch this, on breakfast one day you had 1 jam flavour (only), and next one you'd have another one (only one again). Call that variation. Enough with the food, but it was a 1/10, the 1 because at least water was free. Other hotels could learn from that. Besides the salt cave, we got two 40 min massages, also regretful. There were nothing special, barely more than having a man (my case) or a woman (my girlfriend) touching your skin for 40 minutes. Because of the elevator situation, we were 5 minutes late, so actually we got 35 minutes of massage, and you can trust me that they were not on a tight schedule. Regret having those massages. The swimming pools...where to start. The smell was awful, mostly on the afternoon though. In the morning was ok, quite typical from Hungarian baths. But then we went to the sauna and it was mandatory to be naked. You can agree or disagree with that (we disagree) but on the way in, there were naked men outside of the sauna, left and right, on a mixed gender sauna. We complained to reception and they did nothing. We asked for spare towels at the pool (as indicated by reception) and the senior man taking care of the pool was extremely rude and dismissive. I've been living 7 years in Hungary so I'm used to certain things. Most of the staff in the hotel went beyond that average level of rudeness. The towels we got for the pool had holes and bleach marks. The shower curtain was mouldy...and then you have to pay 25 euros for bringing a pet but they give you absolutely nothing for him/her, moreover, they give you a worse room. You've to pay parking for a hotel in the middle of nowhere (objectively speaking, not literally). Not just never-again but if anyone asks me I'd strongly recommend against the Danubius hotel chain, and I'll be very careful trusting averages of reviews for hotels in Hungary. I'll stick to reading the 1/2 out of fire ratings, since they seem to be the only ones that have travelled enough to objectively rate hotels like this. Not just a bad experience, a loss of faith in Humanity.

Response from Peter N, E-commerce manager at Ensana Thermal Aqua Health Spa Hotel
Responded 2 May 2019
Dear Rafael; Thank you for your review. First, I would like to express my sorrow that we were unable to meet with your expectations. Allow me to answer to the issues you touched in your feedback. Indeed, our hotel is among the older ones, dating back its opening to 1984. Since then the hotel went through numerous refurbishments and renovations, the most recent carried out in 2015 and 2016 when the entire hall and the 2 uppermost floors got a completely new design and furniture. These superior rooms have enhanced comfort and the latest equipment. The parking places are directly attached to the hotel. If you opt to park your car elsewhere, the nearest free parking place is roughly 300 meter away beside the city’s football field, and the nearest pay parking zone is 150 m away from the venue. The hotel is located 7 minutes’ slow walk from the thermal lake’s entrance, and 15 minutes away from the main square. It is adjacent to the city’s park and nature preserve area, so it is indeed in the green, but hardly in a setting that we could label as middle of nowhere in any way. Regarding the pet price, we do not have designated rooms for guests who arrive with pets – and we do not have restricted room types for pets either. I want to add that with our current pet policy we represent the shrinking minority among the 4-star hotels in the town where pets are still allowed. We ask for a standard fee in every case, which covers the cost for the extra cleaning we make after each occasion (the following guest just might have allergy to pet hair so we conduct these cleanings with extra thoroughness). We have 3 elevators serving our guests in the floors’ main hall, and 2 maintenance elevators with a stairway which can also be used. Indeed, the closing of the elevator doors are set to a slower pace, as many, physically challenged guest visits us who otherwise would have trouble getting in an out the elevator in time. This might cause a bit of latency in the busiest periods. I am sorry beyond words that our food services let you down in such a way. Over the last 365 days more than 1100 guests left an online review on various guest-feedback portals, and our F&B department gained a huge amount of praising comments among them. Of course we know all too well, that there is no such thing in hospitality that cannot be made even better. For that we constantly analyze and observe the feedback we get from our guests. As an all-inclusive hotel our aim is to provide various, tasty and healthy meals in the best available quality every day. We work with menus that encompass 14-days at a time, and that are rotated in each year according to the seasons. Our chef puts a great emphasis upon the bakery items, to an extent that he personally checks the facilities of the supplying bakeries on regular intervals to get the most fresh items from their supply. Though we have vegetarian dishes on the everyday menu (31 items during your stay, lunch and dinner combined), vegan diet is indeed an item that is currently not on our regular food list. However, if we have prior knowledge about such demands – even upon your arrival or on site– we do our best to serve the needs of your companion. Our kitchen staff is more than ready to fulfill such wishes, provided they get to know it in the first place. For breakfast we offer at least 3 kinds of jams. Beside water 10 kinds of soft drinks, coffee, plus draught beer and wine for the dinner are also part of the all-inclusive beverage services. As for the odor in the spa area it comes directly from the thermal water. Our resort is among the few which has its own thermal spring, providing the same healing water you can enjoy in the city’s thermal lake. We employ no technology to filter the Sulfur out of the water as it would compromise its healing potential. Regarding the sauna rules it is indeed a passionately debated issue among our guests. We chose to provide separate sauna cabins for those who prefer naked and textile sauna respectively. We have a single, common corridor leading to those cabins, so beside leaving it up to the guests discretion and regard to each other, we promote the rules on our info materials wherever it is possible. I am sorry that our staff could not gain completely your approval. Beside the cleanliness it is the 2nd highest ranked aspect of our hotel in the guest statistics. Whenever an issue arises, our manager on duty, or the guest relation managers are always at your disposal in resolving them. We always strive to improve our services and we firmly believe that the best source to start is the feedback of our guests. I hope that despite your experiences you may give another chance to other venues belonging to our hotel chain, and have a much more pleasant time. Best wishes: Peter Nagy, E-commerce manager
