My experience with the Lapa Rios team began more than a year ago. I was planning my honeymoon as a welcome COVID distraction when I found Lapa Rios through a luxury travel marketing book I had received some time ago. In reading about Lapa Rios, I also learned about the Pacuare Lodge. In short order, we decided to visit both locations, so I reached out to the Lapa Rios travel team to help coordinate a connection between the two properties. Our travel coordinator Nicole went beyond the two properties and coordinated the entire trip. She was wonderful to work with throughout the year: patient, creative, attentive, and friendly. While COVID prevented the wedding, we decided to move forward with the trip and Nicole made us feel special the whole way. So, I could not honestly review this property without first giving my sincerest thanks to Nicole for developing a great itinerary and managing the logistics flawlessly for the entire 11 days we were traveling around Costa Rica. And I mean FLAWLESS. From planes to cars to boats, there was not one hiccup during the whole trip. We arrived at Lapa Rios in the morning, greeted promptly at the airstrip with coconut water and a smile. I loved that we arrived early because it gave us the entire day to enjoy our spectacular villa and the beautiful grounds. There are no words to describe how beautiful this place is - it's truly stunning. Within hours upon arrival two scarlet macaws perched in the tree by our villa, the monkeys were swinging in the trees and we were full and happy from our first (of many) delicious meals. We had enough time to hike the beach and return in time for cocktails and bocas before dinner. The cocktails were great, the snacks were appreciated and dinner was fantastic. It happened to be my birthday on arrival day, so they made a special dessert and wished me a happy birthday. Lovely. The next day, we visited Corcovado with our guide Edwin, who was very knowledgeable and passionate about Osa and the wildlife. For us, this was a can't miss trip - we saw monkeys, a Tapir, a Crested Owl, Cuotis and so many birds. We loved it and we were grateful we decided to spend the time and money to do it. If you plan to do this trip, take the advice from Lapa Rios and get an early cold breakfast, a sandwich for the boat trip, and a cooler of cold drinks for the ride back. Don't be shy about it - it's a very long day and you will appreciate the sustenance. The following two days we relaxed, enjoyed our villa, and did the Waterfall Hike and the Osa Trail hike. I highly recommend both tours. All of our meals were really great. I could drink their watermelon juice every day for the rest of my life and be happy. The standout dishes for us were the Green Gazpacho (and, really, all the cold soups), the Ceviches, the Octopus and Risotto dishes, specifically the Gaucho Rice. Someone back in the kitchen really understands risotto! Rodney, our bartender/waiter for much of the time, also snuck me out the recipe for the Green Gazpacho. Thanks Rodney! The people onsite pulled the entire experience together for us. Everyone you meet is so friendly. It's clear that they love the property, great hospitality and, most importantly, the Osa Peninsula. Thanks to everyone who made our stay special, we won't forget you or the experience you delivered to us. TL, DR: Our trip to Costa Rica was my beacon of light throughout 2020, and the actual experience delivered the dream. Feel free to message me with questions and please see my other review on the Pacuare experience.

As the reviews consistently point out, this is a beautiful place. Rather than repeat all that (lots of steps, etc.), I'll just say that when you stay here make sure you take advantage of every guided experience possible. The guides are incredibly well-trained - impossible to stump them. You will see more than you ever thought you could and you will learn some very cool stories about the natural world.

Thank you Nate for your review! We are very proud of our amazing guides who know the flora and fauna of the exotic Osa península like the back of their hand. And yes, even if you are not a morning person, it is worth getting up early to enjoy our sunrises, while sipping a cup of freshly brewed Costa Rican coffee. We hope to have you again in the near future or at any of our sister lodges.

I have never been more disappointed in a business in my life. After booking a 5-night stay at Lapa Rios, we decided that we just weren’t comfortable traveling internationally yet due to COVID. We canceled 45 days in advance… and they have REFUSED to provide any refund at all. Per their own cancelation policy, reservations that cancel more than 30 days prior are subject to a 96% refund. THEY DO NOT FOLLOW THEIR OWN CANCELATION POLICY. They have stopped returning emails, they haven’t returned a dime, and I am left with no recourse other than to post publicly about what amounts to THEFT. Horrible and dishonest businesses like this don’t deserve to continue operating. I strongly encourage you look elsewhere for lodging while in Costa Rica - there are plenty of hotels that honor their word and don’t steal from customers.

Sean, we understand your concern about not traveling internationally due to COVID 19 back in May 2020. A credit note was offered and accepted with you eventually requesting booking dates in June 2021. After cancelling the second booking dates in June 2021, we again extended the credit note through 2022, honoring the original rates. Our agent has been in contact throughout this year and a half. We hope that you can book a future trip to Costa Rica and experience the exotic Osa Peninsula.

This is one of the best places I've ever been. From the moment you take a step at the airport is amazing, they welcome you with a cold and delicious drink at the airport, the airport transfer is on time and the ride to the lodge is beautiful. The staff, the food, the resort the animal, the property etc. If you haven't been to Lapa please don't wait any longer, is a must visit destination. I hope I can return soon!

Thank you Karla for your enthusiastic recommendation! The Lapa Rios experience does start before you arrive at our lodge. :) We hope to have you back in the near future at the Osa Peninsula. Feel free to also consider our three other sister lodges, all located in unique locations in Costa Rica: Pacuare, Tortuguero and Monteverde.

This was our first trip to Lapa Rios but will not be our last. Photographs, videos and their website gave us what we thought would be an accurate expectation. We weren't even close. Totally blew us away! From the genuine kindness, competency, friendliness and sincerity of every single staff member to the breathtaking views and abundant wildlife, we now consider this our very best vacation and destination ever. I've run companies for over 40 years, and I've never seen one where every single employee displays a true and genuine ownership-mentality even with the smallest of details. Every question was answered with patience, every need anticipated and every event carefully orchestrated with smiles and true friendliness. Taking advantage of the activities, in particular, the early-bird tour(we did it twice!, and it isn't just birds), the waterfall hike, and, most definitely, the Osa Hike, is something not to dismiss. Also, if you can get access to Corcovado National Park(limited entry is permitted daily), do the boat trip and hiking package. Seems pricey but well worth it. All of the above hikes were guided by the extremely knowledgeable staff from Lapa Rios. If professors know half of what these enthusiastic and well-studied field biologist know, I'd be surprised. We learned so much about the flora and the fauna that will make this trip memorable for years to come. We found Jose to be exceptional with his contagious enthusiasm and extensive knowledge of flora and fauna. We saw two sloths, a tapir, hundreds of monkeys(dozens right outside our bungalow), and too many birds to count. Lapa Rios was truly the "river of macaws". The food and service was sublime. Absolutely outstanding. Try everything!! Might have had a few too many desserts. ;-) All of the offerings were so fresh and flavor-filled. Food I thought I didn't like had a sweetness and flavor I didn't know existed. Now, that I'm back home, everything is so bland. We especially liked all of the fish offerings, but the salad starters were also surprisingly memorable. Did I mention the desserts? The level of luxury was evident at every turn but didn't interfere with our ability to feel that we were enveloped in the rain forest rather than being in some disney-like recreation. Reviews I read prior to going that mentioned about how much walking, stairs, etc, I found to be easily dismissible, although understandable. If you are not capable of climbing some stairs to reach heaven, then Lapa Rios might not be for you. It's like walking through a tree house with the elevated boardwalks through the rain forest. Some stairs to be sure, but we always saw animals and beautiful views on the short trip from our bungalow to the front desk, restaurant/bar and pool area. Don't plan on sleeping late or staying up late. You won't want to. We had coffee delivered(they placed it in a little holder right outside our door) at 4:45am to watch the sunrise and listen to the rain forest come alive. The howler monkeys are your alarm clock and the views of the bay and the ocean are magnificent. We lost count of how many spider monkeys were in the trees right around our deck. We watched them for hours. The mommas with the babies on their backs were mesmerizing and so fun to watch. The macaw pairs flying by and perched in the trees were so beautiful they barely seemed real. On our last morning at breakfast, we tried to conure a complaint or think of anything negative about out visit. The only complaint came from my wife who said that they shouldn't have let me order dessert every night. ;-)

We are in total agreement with you Paul. Photos, videos and website barely convey the experience of being at Lapa Rios Lodge! Aside from the destination, our staff and guides are our biggest asset! We always seek knowledgable, enthusiastic locals that are genuine in their personality and attention. A true representation of Costa Ricans! We are glad that you had the chance to hike and explore the exotic Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica, specially Corcovado National Park and get to witness its exotic flora and fauna, howler and spider monkeys among these. And yes, Lapa Rios is a “river of macaws”! :) As you mention, there is an abundance of fauna right at the lodge to be seen from your room, an early wake up call is mandatory! We are so glad that the only complaint was having too much dessert, be ready to enjoy more in your next visit. :D I think that both of you will also enjoy our sister lodge Pacuare Lodge too! Thank you again for your enthusiastic review.
