The first impression is, you have taken a time machine to the 70's.

The rooms are very much retro style, and lso quite run-down. But ours was also clean, and very spacious. Beds for 4 people consisted of 2 x single beds, and 1 x about 120cm wide sofa bed. They sell the room for 4 adults, so the sofa bed will be very small. The single beds were also on the hard side.

Good for travelling with children though.

The spa is also rather small, but was clean, and has all the necessary things. In mens side few showers weren't working. The pool bar was closed on wednesday afternoon which was a minus, but then again its probably cheaper to have it closed than open with the amount of people in the spa at the time. As its included in room price, its nice, but I'd seriously think if I wanted to pay the 19€ to go there separately.

Breakfast standard Scandic, so again ok, but nothing too special. The person who was taking care of the buffet didn't say "good morning" or anything else either.

Bus number 2 takes you to city center from front of the hotel.

So if youre not the type who likes to complain about things, looking for a cheap accomodation, (160€/night for 4 persons including spa and breakfast), I'd recommend. But there are better and nicer places in Hämeenlinna too.

Pros:
-Cheap
- Spa and Breakfast included
- Easy access to city centre by bus

Cons:

- Old and run-down
- Insufficient/small beds for 4 if you travel with adults/teens.

A really pleasant 1-night break.

There were several adjustments due to the many covid-restrictions (including restaurant closures). But we were prepared for this, and were happy how well it was all organised and how smoothly it went. Most importantly the stay felt safe: there were very limited amount of contact with other people, and there was high level of cleanliness.

We also appreciated the pleasant demeanour of all the personnel we encountered; efficient yet patient with explaining all the new rules and practices to everyone.

Our room was spacious, comfortable and functional (for eating in too), with pretty views overlooking the lake. The room included its own sauna and a balcony, which were great additions when having to stay in more than usual.

The spa is really nice though; it's not huge so not sure how crowded it might get normally, but at least currently with limited numbers (10 people max, for 1-hour slots) it was very relaxing.

It's highly recommended to get to know the hotel surroundings too, e.g. go for a walk around the lake or in the Aulanko park. The hotel is a bit further though (5km) from Hämeenlinna city center.

Takeout breakfast (which you picked yourself from buffet, at limited intervals) was very good, and so were the takeout dinner options (great price with the Scandic programme, maybe would've been bit pricey at normal price). Main drawback was the limited timeslots for breakfast, which meant we had to get up much earlier than normally on a holiday.

Stayed one night in this old hotel in the beginning of june, which is just before rush season. The hotel is cosy at some level but sometimes you need to do something to refresh the facilities. The spa could use some renovation too. For example the very small outdoor pool is so small and dirty that you simply just don't want to be there. Big pool is ok. Breakfast is ok but it seems like no one in the staff cared that the beverages automat was not working properly and some food was not available, and still it was not rush hour in the morning. My biggest concern though is the hotels restaurant "Little Italy" that seems nice but has got to get guests furious. Had dinner there and I would say the restaurant was 3/4 full at that evening. The staff seemed very stressed when I arrived but I got a table and sat down. Ordered their Little Italy burger with french fries and a glass of wine. Time went by and other guest started to get their food before me. I also noticed that some guests started to ask for their food by going to the bar counter, because the staff would almost ignore them at the tables. After waiting 1 hour and 15 minutes I kindly asked if my food was coming soon. One guy in the staff mumbled something about "I don't know what they do in the kitchen.." and one lady said she would check and and then came to tell me that my food was coming soon. She also apologized and said I would get my glass of wine for free. I got my burger 5 minutes later but it was very dull and poorly made. Not restaurant quality. No one came and asked if it was ok and no one looked at me so I had to walk to the bar again and ask if I could pay. Then I heard a couple ask for their dessert a second time so my guess is that they got some bad reviews that evening. Hopefully they can do better when peak season starts!

Booking for a family of five wasn’t possible for having two rooms in the same room class, therefore our rooms were three floors apart. Checkin was extremely slow and personnel unprofessional. Not a good idea to put a trainee there during the season weekend.

The room for kids was dirty, there were empty beer cans on the patio, and the bed lamp was broken (in pieces…). Reception promised to have it cleaned while we were away, but instead two non-Finnish speaking people just walked in an hour before agreed time.

Overall the hotel was out of date and not kept in condition and quite dirty. Too few personnel present. Rooms were noisy, you could easily hear normal level talk from the neighbor room.

Waiting time for dinner was over an hour, so we went elsewhere. Breakfast was ok but all the tables were dirty and full of dirty dishes. The workers who were present seemed to be more interested in their grumpiness than customers.

For the checkout I received an email for an online checkout, but that didn’t work so we had to queue for a long time in reception where the clerk was somewhat out.

With this price level and Scandic brand would have waited for quality, not something that reminded the USSR in the 80’s.

The hotel location and the surroundings are magnificent but the actual hotel&spa is ridicously low in quality and service. The staff resourcing wasn’t sufficient for the amount of visitors and there were queues everywhere. Also rooms weren’t available and unclened when we received our room around 10pm - my husband actually had to change sheets himself and find clean towels from staff area as you couldn’t find any personnel. Hotel’s restaurant served high priced and low quality dishes and the building itself is in need for a quick upgrading.

This historic hotel in the scenic landscape was opened in 1938. The first years it acted as a military hospital during WW2.

We stayed in the old wing. At the end of the building are four rooms with the best lake views. Three Superior Sauna rooms on floors 4-6 and one Superior Plus room on floor 7.

If you want to guarantee panoramic lake views it is advisable to book a Superior Sauna room. There are four other Superior Plus rooms on the 7th floor that have smaller balconies in the direction of the golf course.

The rooms on the 7th floor have been recently renovated. They are decorated with Vallila textiles in the style of the 1930s.

Next to the hotel, you can find a golf course, a riding school, and the Puistometsä exercise area. You can enjoy the beautiful scenery from the Aulanko observation tower.

Hämeenlinna city center is five kilometers away. The railway station can be reached by local bus that stops right in front of the hotel. You can also walk from there. It is a 40-minute walk along a walkway with beautiful lake views.

Although the hotel was quite full because of the long Ascension Day weekend, everything was surprisingly well handled. It was easy to find a clean table at the breakfast.

I can't really recommend this hotel to anyone. It’s a shame because the location and landscape are great.

When we entered our room, we immediately noticed that it had not been cleaned. There was dust everywhere, some mold growing on the walls, dead bugs in the corner and the bathroom floor were full of pubic hair. The toilet had stains from the previous guests. We stayed for two night and the room didn’t get cleaned even once. We know that because we left bath towels one the floor on the first day and our trash can was never emptied. On the last night we ran out of towels and toilet paper. I went to the reception to get some and there they just commented that the cleaning staff most have forgot to clean our room.

The spa was dirty and overall, the whole hotel is in terrible condition. A total renovation of the place is needed. We went to the restaurant one evening and the waiting time was ridiculously long. When the food arrived, it was cold.

Our family (parents and two children) visited the hotel in summer of 2021 and decided to give it a second chance in April this year. The cleanliness of the hotel in general was a lot better, but still there was a potato chip in the corner and a piece of rubbish under the desk in our room, left from the previous occupant.
One of the reasons why we had booked a superior plus room, was that it has two bathrooms and therefore is really handy for a family of four. Except that there was a really bad sewage problem in the other bathroom and we couldn't use it for the most of our stay, the smell was so bad. We told about it right away and I understand that a problem like that can't be solved immediately, but all we got was a remark "how unfortunate".
On the plus side: there are bath robes for children (that's a big plus), one of the members of the staff at the pool bar is super friendly and for us - there is a horse riding school right next door.

When I came (monday evening about 21.50) to reception, the receptionist kept on chatting with colleques about 5 minutes, while I was waiting and asking her to take me in. She kept on chatting still about 2-3 minutes after my asking. And this was the whole picture during our 30 people meeting during 2 days. I did not feel to be welcome dto hotel at all!

The interior is old and air inside feels bad. Everything need renovation. Especially the rooms.

If I am asked, we will not come to Aulanko back.

We ( family of 2 adults and 2 teenagers) waited long for the holiday visit at Scandic Aulanko, and finally got there in June 2021. The temperature was exceptionally warm in Finland, +30 C, and we longed for a cool hotel room for a rest / vacation sleep.

To our unfortunate surprise the room/whole hotel had NO air conditioning, and the room temperature raised up to +34 C. It was quite a disaster. When we longed for nice, cooling sleep, we did not sleep almost at all for two night stay. Fans were provided after a request but had no influence as there was no cool/fresh air to circle. The curtains were not proper "sun blocking curtains" which could have helped a bit.

Furthermore, the family room faced the back yard where the maintenance service took place at 7am.with quite a noise coming from the trucks/garbage emptying.

Scandic chain has always been one of the top choices for family travelling but this time I / we truly encountered a disaster. I had never imagined Scandic hotels would not have air conditioning / cooling system. Since it was possible, it should have been mentioned in the room description.

When discussing the topic with the hotel management, the only thing they said was "sorry". No compensation offered, not any kind. I am very sorry to say but this really lowered Scandic ranking. Had the management dealt the topic differently, I would have reacted bit more positively.

The surroundings of Aulanko are beautiful and there is lots of potential there. I hope Scandic will dig into this potential and improve the place.

Hi Elena, from Tampere you have to take the bus from the main bus station to Hämeenlinna. You can check the connections and the prices here, and also buy tickets beforehand (you can also buy the ticket from the driver, cash or card, so it is not necessary to buy in advance): matkahuolto.fi/en/ You will arrive at the Hämeenlinna bus station, and from there you need to take the local bus (number 2 is the best) to Scandic Aulanko. Please note that you must have cash to buy the ticket (3,40 euros), no cards accepted. You can check the timetables here (just change the time and date according to your needs): reittiopas.hameenlinna.fi/Linja-autoasema Hope this helps! Best regards, Hanna
