Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

This wonderful Franciscan monastery situated so close to such beautiful land and seascape is a wonderful place. Parking is free but most visitors either leave a few Euros in the donation box of the church, coffee shop or souveigner shop.
The coffee shop has become an "Al Fresco" affair. There is a serving hatch and the old coffee shop has enlarged to accomadate all sorts of catering equipment. So if you are religious then you have arrived in a beautiful setting for your kind of worship. They also do lots of retreats etc. However Covid 19 has changed the format enormously so check out online to see what is still running.
We enjoyed our visit which was complimented by a visit to one of the many beaches nearby.A "cloudburst" covered our departure from this beautiful place. A wee word of warning, the first beaches below the friary are good for picnicking, sunbathing or sitting quietly and reading but unsafe for swimming.
Take my advice and follow the path around the headland and be rewarded with a selection of beaches.
We had our first swim in the sea of 2020 near the end of July. Embarrassing I know!
Come and enjoy Ards Friary oh the best part, the car park is free!

Lovely spot quite a bit in from the main road. The friary is set on a beautiful beach with lots of walking opportunities. It is very peaceful and a perfect place to get away from COVID worries. There are beautiful marble benches dedicated by families of the deceased perfect for sitting and admiring the beach and enjoying the tranquillity. There is a cafe which opens at 12.00 noon until 5.00 pm. At the moment there is only outdoor seating available so pray for a dry day. Nice clean toilet block on the grounds.

Beautiful location to enjoy and take the several walks associated with the Friary. Take time to explore the church, speak with the brothers and staff, and enjoy a snack at the cafe. They are doing amazing things at this location so be sure to ask about the retreat center and all of the associated offerings. Magical place that you should see.

Cafe take away point has extensive cakes, traybakes, drinks menu. Reasonably priced, staff helpful. Piping hot chocolate. Walk about 25 mins to get to a more secluded beach between the headlands. Lovely views and tranquil setting. Chapel itself is very peaceful.

A shout out to our new favourite coffee stop in Donegal. The cafe at Ards Friary Coffee Dock have just reopened after a refurb to their lovely little cafe. For those passing through NW Donegal do stop and enjoy the beautiful walks around the forests and beaches of Ards Friary Retreat Centre. The landscape is stunning and the people so friendly. To cap it off, wonderful scones and fresh sandwiches all home made…. The coffee itself?, a Cappuccino served to you by a Capuchin Brother…. Not more authentic than that! And a great coffee too. The day out around the grounds is free, but I did find a little auto till where you can make voluntary donations…. Money well spent for such a lovely morning. We’ll be back again soon.

Beautiful place, really peaceful place to spend some time. The walks are beautiful as are the beaches, well worth a visit. Some of the path is steep but not bad and it’s well marked. Views are stunning .

This is a Francisian Friary outside Creeslough on the road to Dunfanaghy. You will see a few sign posts for this wonderful place. Beware of the road narrowing suddenly and then it alternates between having room to pull in and not. There is a large car park and public toilets outside the Friary. Not only does this Friary serve the local Catholic Population but it is used as a place of retreat, reflection and as a conference center. It is backing onto the Ards Forest Park and sits on top of the Peninsula looking over at Downings.
It is not safe to swim near the Friary due to rip currents etc. There are some beaches for paddling in, but you need to go around the headland and find the first of many safer beaches with the forest behind them. The scenery alone is worth the trip. There are lots of Marble benches for weary trekkers to rest and contemplate the scenery and some days the peace of it all.
At the friary there is a nice little coffee shop and the cakes there are positively sinful.
Should that bother you there are religious services on a regular basis and even confession should you need it. There is a small religious shop selling small and large items of interest. All in all a nice place to visit for the religious or simply walkers.
The scenery, smell of the sea and woodland all wrap you up in a nice feeling of calm.

Ards Friary is a beautiful place in Donegal for a quiet getaway. It is a retreat centre but what you do is self defined so you can participate or not with no pressure. The rooms are simple but clean and well maintained. The food was fantastic! Breakfast, dinner and tea time were all highlights. The grounds are amazing and we walked for miles along the coast and through the forest. Definitely a great place to stay!! Only 15 minute drive from Dunfaghny.

Called to see Friary (road quite narrow once off main road). Grounds were lovely - sense of calm and tranquility. Met by a friendly brother who welcomed everyone. After visiting the church & little shop (there is also a little tea shop), we sat on benches overlooking the beach where a lone fisherman threw his line from where he stood in the water. Lovely.
