I stayed here for two nights with a group while attending a local conference, and had a fabulous time - including the most delicious steak I have eaten. This is a country hostelry to be enjoyed for its West Coast character rather than for luxury, and it has character in spades! The exhibition the walls give a fascinating panorama of...

I visited this hotel for lunch and drinks with a group of motor bikers on Easter Saturday. An old mining town, Blackball was almost deserted but the hotel was geared up to handle our custom. They have a good selection of beers and other drinks while the food menu contained a range of basic but wholesome dishes. I chose Cornish...

On route to Westport so a visit to Blackball was on the cards. First visit there, was keen to try some of the famous local salami and see the infamous Formerly the Blackball Hilton. Unfortunately being Good Friday the salami place was closed - but the Formerly the Blackball Hilton was open. Upon entry to the bar it was like...

Attracted by its "Coaster" reputation, we went out of our way to visit this establishment. In almost every respect, we were not disappointed - evocative town, evocative pub, all that was missing was a rowdy mob of miners at the bar. I would also add that the lunch food was tasty and reasonably-priced. So, what was wrong? The hostess, that's...

Having last been in Blackball 30 years ago we decided to take a detour on our way home from Greymouth to see if it had changed much and, I have to admit, check out the Formerly the Blackball Hilton. Well, the town is a pleasant little place and has done a commendable job of providing some history and information for...

Only stay here if you really know what the place is all about. It is not your normal hotel or lodge. Rooms are basic but still slept through the night. Food - well my pork was over cooked and hard but my wife has the rack of lamb which she said was delicious. Beware of one thing that is if...

This is a two storey hotel which is over 100 years old. You step in the door and you are transported back in time. The first thing you see is a stunning old bar and friendly locals acknowledging you no matter who you are. The bedroom we had was a warm pink with a huge king size bed with aptly...

My wife and I were having a short break in the area and having read some of the history visited Blackball. After an hour or so walking around and buying some, well actually a lot, of the famous Blackball Black pudding plus some salami we retired to the Blackball Hilton for coffee and a bun. We enjoyed reading the history...

Beautiful old pub and cool little town. Stayed in Blackball for a couple of nights. Had a few dark beers out the front with a perfect backdrop of the surrounding mountains. Publican was super friendly, and got to meet a few of the locals. Recommend a visit.

Stayed for 1 night on a motorcycle trip with my son, would loved to have stayed longer. Comfortable and welcoming old hotel, fantastic food, great locals and staff, but if you want fancy stuff stay in the cities. Remember, this hotel is 100 years old. This place is the real deal, long may it exist, will definately be back.
