I have been to Whanganui early 2016 to have a rest from my travels - Braemer house looked like a palace, which was the B&B and not the hostel. The hostel is separated from the B&B and looks like the odd 1920's with old furniture, squeaky floors and high ceilings (which makes it feel home). It's clean but worn and... More

Hi Phillipp and thanks for your review. Glad you did enjoy staying at Braemar despite the "squeaky floor and high ceilings" it is after all 120 years old and still going strong. Re bedding we could have relocated you to the annexe if you had asked for a longer bed. We have a tremendous amount of over 6 foot Germans... More

We stayed in the hostel rooms. We found them to be spacious and very clean. The bathroom was really nice which was a pleasant surprise. Clive was welcoming and helpful. It was a shame we had to leave so early I would have liked to have found a quiet spot in the garden to enjoy my book. Will definitely recommend... More

The owner is a very nice and helpful. The hostel is very nice, quit and clean. It is a bit of a walk from the I-site. You get 250 MB for free every day and you can buy 1GB for 5$. The beds a nice and comfy. There is also a pack'n save within 15 min walk.

Stayed 2 nights in a private double room out the back of the B&B with a shared toilet/shower next door. The walls are pretty thin. One single powerpoint near the door and none near bedhead. Hosts were efficient and time conscious. The kitchen and common areas for the hostel were clean and tidy but basic. It is easier to use... More

An excellent YHa Hostel, well run and spotlessly clean, if we are in the area next time, will try out the glamorous looking B&B side of the house. We only stayed two days and wished we had time for longer

Stayed 1 night in characterful historical house close to the Wanganui river. Rooms cosy, with own basin, & bathrooms across the hall. Robes supplied if required but the night we stayed we were the only b&b guests, so had a choice of showers, toilets or bath to use. Lounge room with TV to relax in the evening. Breakfast was made... The good thing about the place was the lounge which gave me quite a homely feeling, but the rooms didn't have doors and there was strange energy coming from this place. Bed was allgood, kitchen facilities alright, but the room was really average considering the price. I don't know about the B&B, it's probably better, but at the hostel one... More

Interesting comments from you Jarnold.. The irony of your remarks was that several people staying in the private rooms would not come into the kitchen whilst you and your two friends were there, we in fact gave them private access to the B&B kitchens, because they said they found you rather strange to be around? Best wishes anyway and we... More

With a change in schedule we showed up a day early and in the evening. Clive (owner) was obviously surprised at guests standing at his front door but was more than accommodating.
