What a little gem! The receptionist was super friendly and helpful, definitely one of the best we have dealt with regarding hostels. There was a cute dog sitting at reception and we saw guests taking it out for a walk. Nice atmosphere, with a very homely feeling in kitchen/ living area. Large collection of cooking equipment. Wifi only 2dollars for...

Recently stayed for 2 weeks. The hostel was well run by friendly, helpful manager and staff. The rooms were kept clean. Our double room with en-suite was cleaned daily. Kitchen facilities were shared, but kept clean morning and evening. Plenty of seating areas, Wi-Fi available and free tea and coffee available throughout the day. Lots to do in the area...

We had a very nice stay at Rainbow Lodge. Big and full equiped kitchen with a cosy living room. The bedroom was charming and clean. The bed was very comfortable. There was a hairdryer in the bathroom. The only negative point was that we had to pay for the Internet...

The actual hostel was quite huge with lots of rooms and facilities. The staff was really friendly and helpful. There were sitting areas everyone In a good lay out to meet people. The kitchen facility was nice and provided warm shelter with lots of space for people. I stayed in the dorms and the beds were comfy enough. The only...

We stayed at Rainbow Lodge for 2 nights so that we could walk the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. We booked a double room with shared bathroom. Everything was exactly as it had been described on our booking website. The room was basic but clean. The staff were very friendly and the kitchen and communal areas were kept clean. The hostel was...

The mattress of my bed was so old and so thin (4 beds female dorm) that I could feel the bed's structure. It was like sleeping on the ground. They really need to change the mattresses! Otherwise, the hostel is nice, twenty or thirty minutes away from the free hot pools and the staff is friendly and helpful.

Very friendly staff, close to town, good, clean facilities. They really know what backpackers need - coat hooks and towel racks on beds,, individual reading lights, extension cords, hairdryers - All little things that really make a difference! It was Sod's law that after I had done the Tongariro the showers weren't working properly, but it was all fixed asap,...

The Hostel is near to the city, the staff is friendly, the kitchen is always clean, there is very cheap wifi that even works in you rooms. (2$ per day, 6$ per week). Rooms are clean and nice. Bathrooms are very tidy. The Sauna makes it just perfect.

Rainbow Lodge is a great place to stay in. The rooms are big enough with large windows to let natural light in, the beds are very comfortable and the staff extremely friendly. Just make sure you're not WiFi-dependent as it is not too great (and costs 2$/day).

We stayed here for 2 nights in a 4 people share room. The room was spacious enough and beds were great. Otherwise places are little rundown, and a minus for flooding shower sewer. Kitchen and living room area is big enough, even though kitchen escepially got very crowded every day. The problem with kitchen is very low amount of kitchen...

Hi and welcome to Taupo's original and favourite backpackers. Rainbow lodge was purpose built and designed for the needs of travellers by Mark Dumble (fishing expert??) and Sue Mrozinski themselves seasoned travellers. They had spent several years on the world's highways and by-ways and having accommodation experiences that are sometimes described as "Character Building" they settled in Taupo famous for its Rainbow Trout and beautiful scenery. Having had my own character building experiences I came to rest at Rainbow lodge and worked closely with them for a year before they handed me the reigns. Ross ... more   less
