Motels are all the same, aren't they? It's like they all came together and bought all the furniture, furnishing, plates, mugs, carpets, pillows at the ONE shop.

Aura has all the things you'd expect, but the main point of difference is the terrific service they provided. We had 4 rooms and each one had a personalised greeting; after we left, there was a personalised email to ask us to give feedback on our stay; and during the stay, we kept stopping and chatting with the staff.

But another point of difference is that they're trying to be environmentally-friendly. Cleaners have a weighing scale to measure how much rubbish guests create, and you can forgo the daily cleaning service and they'll donate a few dollars to a charity. Awesome!

Only drawback is that the rooms are a little dated, but not a big deal, really.

Hi krebs1979, I love this review so much, so I'm going to tell you how it is on the furniture & fittings front. Yes, a lot of Hotels & Motel use the same suppliers, so you do certainly find the same things again and again. The reason is pretty simple, 1. Things need to be commercial grade and hard wearing (believe it or not, all guests don't treat things as if it were their own). 2. We need to ensure we can get the design line again and again and again, this way plates, mugs etc. can all match without having bits and pieces in each room. 3. Suppliers mean great service, easy returns and warranties, free postage and same day dispatch - this makes life simple for us and gives us the time we need to give the level of personalised service you experienced at Aura Accommodation. We use Vendella International - check them out, they are pretty cool NZ company. May next year we kick off another 10 bathroom renovations, this along with a Pool Resurfacing and selected Kitchen renovations means we are committed to continue to improve our property for our guests. Great to see you had such a great stay with us, look forward to catching you next time, Nick @ Aura

We enjoyed our stay at Aura. The suggestion board was very helpful for giving us ideas of what to do and where to eat. The room was clean. The location made it easy to walk to bars and restaurants. Overall we would recommend staying here.

Not quite sure how Aura came about but compared to the previous Havana Motel on this site visited many years ago it is 200% better. Friendly welcome to begin with on arrival followed by being personally escorted to our room set the scene for what was a comfortable 3 night stay. This is an older style motel that has been spruced up really well with modern furnishings and a completely refurbished bathroomi. Our unit at least. It’s location near the lake and Eat Street probably account for the higher than expected nightly rate for this motel. That would be the only thing that prevents us giving 5 stars but maybe it’s just what you have to pay in Rotorua nowadays. However there are lots of extras-two mineral pools, a thermally heated all year round swimming pool, free reasonably speedy wifi, a barbecue area and bikes you can borrow. Really liked that they were giving back to the community with the “save a service” option of not having our room needlessly serviced each day and a local charity getting $3 for each day the room was not serviced- a nice touch.

Excellent staff, comfortable, convenient and great value for money!
Staff welcome made us feel at home and continued throughout stay.
Mineral pools were good and private allowing plenty of personal time.
Free bikes were great.
Convenient for Eat Street restaurants and lake boat, helicopter and sea plane.

Was so nice to be greeted by Lucy upon arrival, who took us through the accommodation. What a fabulous location, and such knowledgeable staff. My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our time at Aura, strongly recommend the deluxe suite with spa, make sure you hit their thermal pools! Best deal in town. Highly recommend Rainbow Mountain summit climb for intermediate to advanced walkers and Waitupo Geothermal Wonderland for day trips!

Hi Thomas, Thanks for the great review. We really loved hosting you in Rotorua. Glad to hear you tackled Rainbow Mountain, it is a pretty spectacular climb on a clear day, with views around the whole area including Mt Tarawera & Lake Rotomahana. All the best, Nick

You will most likely still use a heater in late September.

Beds are firm, but not too firm! The outdoor steamer could be good for the trout, maybe?

Hi Jimmy O, we only have AC in the 2 Bedroom Superior Unit. If people do feel uncomfortable with the heat it is generally through February, December is not an issue
