Came across this lovely backpackers in Paihia by a suggestion from a backpackers in Auckland and so glad they did. Soon as I arrived was greeted by a lovely man (Owner I think) then taken to my room by another person who gave me a great quick all about the hostel and town talk he the even sold me some...

We stayed here for 2 nights for a stop over before going to Cape Reinga. The manager was very friendly, and the place looked good for a backpacker hostel. One thing I noticed was the kitchen needed some cleaning as some people didn't care too much of the other people living with them. Also when we slept the fist night,...

this is the first I have heard that some one has bought some bed bugs into the lodge, they do arrive in people luggage, and about 3 or 4 times a year we find traces of them, and quite often we find the bag they have travelled in or on. But you came, you stayed and said nothing, so if...

The rooms aren't bad. I was in the ground floor and I agree about the glass doors covered by curtain (below). If you're doing anything in the room and one of your dorm mates comes in or out everyone can see everything. I was placed in the wrong room, an accident I appreciate, but my things were moved without me...

Hayley, in error I put you into the wrong room, you came up and got a key for the correct room, at no time did I move your luggage. When you left I remember you asking if any thing had been handed in, had not been then and not been since. I contacted the group of 3, and the single...

The hostel is clean and quiet. It also has a good kitchen. However i felt like the staff was very unfriendly at best. I didnt really enjoy the fact that my dorm room only had a glass door which you only could cover with a curtain.

the glass doors have been there for 30 years, those rooms have a bathroom and are mixed sex, most folk use the bathroom for the purposes of modesty. Private rooms are just that private, mixed dorms are less private, I suspect its a trade off from desire for privacy and cost

The owner is very friendly and has a lot of good advice for which tours to do. The kitchen is very clean (such a rarity with hostels) and has a nice lounge area to watch DVDs, read a book, enjoy your meals, etc. The room itself is warm (I was there in the winter) and also comfortable. Overall, a fantastic...

Pepper Tree lodge is interesting. From the outside it looks a bit like beach town motel, doors opening onto the ground floor rooms with a second floor balcony. The patio area and path up to the office gives it a bit of a resort like vibe as well. Brian (the owner?) is a bit of a character and I can...

There are a lot of Pros and cons to this place. It is spotlessly clean and Bryan does an amazing job of maintaining it. It has everything you need and the beds are very comfortable, If you like to sleep don't book it for a weekend. The street is party central and the noise is still going at 3 in...

We stayed in a family room with private bathroom at this hostel in January 2016. Helpful host. Good common areas. Found a half-empty bottle under the bed, otherwise clean. Low pressure in very basic shower. Extra charge for wifi. No reading lights for bunk bed.

Great location on Kings Rd and much more reasonable in price and quieter than larger chains on the same street. The rooms were extremely clean as was the communal area, kitchen and bathroom. It was a stones throw from the beach and you could hire kayaks for free from this backpackers. You could also hire bikes for free here as...
