After a hard day's travel on the Motu trail, we stopped off at the Matawai and had a fantastic time. The facilities were basic but the beds were comfortable and the welcome was fantastic. We made our own enjoyment in the bar and had a really good and hearty evening meal and breakfast. Just what was needed before heading back...

Great historic pub. Stayed one night after doing day one of the Motu ride. Essie and her team were great. Good food, beer and beers - what more could you ask for . And great value. The rooms varied from twins to doubles.

Thank you for your lovely review and giving me the opportunity to explore parts of the Motu that I wouldn't have normally seen. Easy work when the guests are so pleasant. I am glad you enjoyed your stay.

We (2 couples) had a 1 night stop here before taking to the Motu Road. (Take a diversion from Motu to the Motu Falls and walk across the suspension bridge.) We were met by Essie and daughter Holly and given a very warm and friendly welcome to this wonderful old traditional hotel. Don't expect en-suites - they weren't invented then!...

I had emailed before I left home to enquire about accommodation for a bike tour around East Cape. A phone call to Mine Host Essie Langley ensured me of a memorable stay at the historic 1913 Matawai Hotel. It is located on the drag back to Gisborne, in a charming township located on the infant Motu stream. Essie, from Waiheke...
