The food was ok, the hamburgers were good but the special Meat Pie dishes were small, accompanied by only mashed potatoes and peas, and quite unappealing, which along with pretty average service made it a disappointing evening out for us and our guests.

Great spot to watch the game in the CBD. The burgers were great and their own brew went down really well. The staff were excellent and the atmosphere was fun. The bar is small and cosy and well decorated.

I have been traveling for the past 6 weeks, this has been by far the worst meal we had on our entire trip . Both of us ordered the spicy othello, however both our burgers were different . One with nachos and one without . One with two pieces of chicken tenders and the other with four. It was smothered...

This was a no stress reasonably priced restaurant. we had the roast of the day which was ample And the steak special which was massive. Decor is a bit dated and not the place to go for a romantic dinner. But fine for a quick and easy tasty dinner. The staff were friendly and polite

First of all the location was great. In the middle of it all. Kinda felt out of place in the middle of all the tall buildings and everything. Second the staff was really nice. We arrived 06:00 am from Chile and our check in was 15:00 pm. The lady at the front desk was super helpful and let us in...

I've a fine tale to tell of this place of lodging: firstly, the friendliness of the staff, whether pouring one of their fine ales or answering some of the many questions this traveler had, was very pleasing. The location of the establishment itself gets you into the heart of the city within minutes by foot. Living quarters were dry and...

We had lunch here & enjoyed two very large pots of NZ green lipped muscles! There were so many we couldn't finish them all! They were super fresh and delicious, huge & succulent! We also had Yummy hot chips! Our waiter was very friendly & cheerful which is always nice. Thank you.

Stopped by for a drink and was pleasantly surprised to find a beautifully brewed local IPA. The tavern was not to busy and the décor is a bit dated but I think it adds to its charm. Overall an interesting place to stop by for a drink alone or with friends. I didn't stay at the hotel so cannot comment...

I stayed for one night back in March while on a 24 hour stopover in Auckland. I chose this hotel due to being a big craft beer fan, and wasn't let down by the quality of the ales available, some brewed on-site. Dianne, one of the managers, was an absolute star and I got far too little sleep due to...

This place is old and tired. I'm just glad we stayed for one night. So many better hotels for similar price point. Rotten, stinky laundry in hallway is disgusting also. Don't bother as you'll just be disappointed like we were.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
1898 was the birth of the Shakespeare Hotel and ever since then it has been serving New Zealanders and travelers from around the globe with warm hospitality and wonderful flavours in food being New Zealand's first Brewpub, with our own crafted beer, handcrafted from one of New Zealand's award winning Brewers and a mix of local NZ beers. The Location of the Hotel is excellent bang in the middle of Auckland City so close to all transport with buses, ferrys etc within a few hundred meters. The accommodation consists of 10 rooms which are basic with an en-suite and the beds are comfortable. This is not your typical boring hotel. The Shakespeare oozes character and if you are afraid of walking up a few stairs then probably not the place to stay. Each room is different and the rooms on the top floor are more modern than the lower floor. The Terrace Restaurant offers a great mix of cuisine, live music out on the al fresco dining deck overlooking the city every Friday. We are not 5 star in terms of accommodation but we are definitely 5 stars in a good quality Kiwi experience...we look forward to having you as our guests.... ... more   less
