Thus hotel was a surprise. It is certainly cheap and the location is great. It doesn't pretend to be anything grand, it is a budget hotel. My room was small but had everything I needed for a quick trip. I would stay here again.

Upon arriving at the 'Great' Southern Hotel I was greeted by friendly staff who promptly checked me in and informed me that the rooms were not serviced. If I wanted to change my towels, sheets, bathroom provisions or anything else in the room I would have to come and collect the items from reception. Having received the swipe card to... More

Booked The Great Southern in Melbourne CBD for an overnight night stay. Try and find anywhere to stay in Melbourne for under $100.00. This is terrific value and it's not some back packer venue like you would expect paying $70.00 for a night in the CBD. Friendly staff at a 24 hour reception. The room was new, clean and albeit... The room was basic, but on a boys trip to Melbourne it was safe and central to all the attractions. Really friendly staff, 24/7 staffed and bag holding for $2. Would happily have children here if on a budget, I believe car parking is also onsite. No view from family room but they happily set it up with four single... More

Centrally located close to southern cross station and trams made it easy to get around town The room was clean and we were located in the rear of the hotel, it was good for my smoking partner as you could smoke outside the room

Although room was very small it was clean and had Fox footy channel. Location is excellent. Checking in and out was most efficient. Only downside is not much parking but apparently there is a car park around the corner. We did not have a car this time so it didn't matter.

I have stayed here for over 30 times, love the room, it's always affordable and the room is clean, stylish, the bed is comfy and the bathroom shower looks ultra cool! The only thing I'd love them to improve is to speed up the check in time. Checkout is fast. I recommend this place to stay in the Melbourne city!

The Great Southern Hotel has successfully upgraded the venue with a beautifully furnished and newly tiled lobby and renovated rooms with new tv sets, beds and other furnishings depending on the room type. The front desk has friendly staff showing off their skills in a very helpful manner. There is never a grumpy one there since I have started to... More

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
