I was in Melbourne for just one night, for a wedding and had to catch the skybus at 4am the next morning so wanted a hotel near Southern Cross Station. The Great Southern was the best value in the area. The rooms were clean and tidy, the check in efficient. My room was ready early which was handy. The location...

My rooms have been on the 5th & 6th floors of the more modern part of this place in Spencer Street just walking distance from the train station. The cleanliness and bar fridge access are excellent and well kept.

Stayed in the Family Room that consists of two king-sized beds (it's actually two single beds put together to make it one king bed). The bed is indeed huge but it wasn't comfortable at all. The room was so dim with minimal lighting - the light came from the lamp and at the entrance, and it was warm light which...

I should have read all the reviews before I booked the hotel because it's true - staff need better training as they don't even offer basic customer service. I have never been to a hotel whose staff do not greet their guests. When I asked for an extra towel the man at the reception did not exchange a single word...

Very poor rooms with view in a wall, reckon it gives a feeling of a prison cell. Very old beds, tired and in bad shape. We book for 4 and get 3 towels. Guys at the reception are barely polite. Not a good experience, you can get much better value for your money.

The hotel reception was unfriendly as some other earlier reviewers had mentioned. The room is filthy, inadequate lighting in the room, no bedside lamps, no lights even at the small pantry, beds are old and rickety, head slanting backward when sleeping, can hear people walking and creaking sound of bead from one floor above, rigid shower head, don't even provide complimentary...

If you are anything like me who prefers good customer service over anything, you should think twice before you book. I love travelling and have stayed in so many different accomodations from hotels, motels, inns, bnbs to backpackers. But I have never come across such rude staffs at the front desk like here. People who sits on the front desk...

The doors are so thin between the rooms and the hallway, you here every sound. We were kept up most of the night to people running, screaming and banging doors in the hallway. Doors and windows need better reinforcement so as to reduce the noise

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
