When you go to your room you feel like you are in an old prison with all the cell blocks above and below you. The room itself was a nice, but small room that was fairly modern but basic. I did have a couple of gripes about the place. 1) The bathroom fan was not working and when we asked...

Booked to stay for 5 nights whilst attending a conference but checked out early to get away from the place. Horrified to find that our ‘superior courtyard room’ had no external windows, no sight of the external world and virtually no natural light. It felt like a dark, airless box and the ‘courtyard’ outside the door was more like a...

Location of this motel is perfect if going to the casino precinct but is so old and run down and sadly dirty. The room we had last time we stayed was not so bad but this time dirty and run down we will not return to this motel and way overpriced .

Stayed at TGSH rather than drive home from a work function. For the price of the room compared to the cost of a taxi due to where I live, it was a no-brainer. For $100 I got a small room with a queen sized bed, TV, air conditioner, bar fridge, ensuite bathroom, coffee making facilities, iron & board. The checkin...

I guess you get what you pay for? We did get a cheap deal & the bed linen was crisp clean although a tad firm. Bathroom looked like redone in fairly recent times and quite good really. Carpet needed replacing & spotty; seemed to be vacuumed clean though. Walls needed a good scrub and repainting. Overall looked somewhat "tired". Staff...

I had the cheapest room available for a weekend in Melbourne. It was great value for money. Clean and had all the amenities you would expect. The only downside was that there was no functioning air con within the rooms (only heating). Reception advised that the hotel was all set to the one temperature (which was way too hot for...

Although there was no room service (not in my package anyway) this hotel was lovely and clean with generous size rooms. The reception staff were very helpful, the cafe/restaurant was excellent too. The location was just a short walk from Southern Cross station and also close to the venue where my conference was.

A friend and I stayed at the great southern hotel for only two nights thank god. We choose this hotel as it was close to the train station which we needed to use each day. Upon entering the room we realised the bathroom was made of glass and faced straight on to the bed room... no privacy at all! Although...

Can't complain about the location but room was badly in need of refurbishment. Walls in need of new paint, and very little natural light. Lights in room where then incredibly bright. Stayed on 3rd floor situated in inner part of the building and there was a bin for smokers 2 doors down so room also smelt of smoke. Charged extra...

Unfortunately had to do the booking less than a week before the overnight stay. Ended up in a room on the 1st floor that looks directly on to Spencer St, ran the air con all night to attempt to drown out the traffic noise. For what I paid, the quality would be questionable to say the least. I have stayed...

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
