Island is a gem in the ocean with fascinating life in the trees and the seas. Get a reef room if possible. Go snorkelling both off the beach and especially in the harbour to see manta rays. Go out on the snorkelling trip.

I have visited Heron Island 7 times (first visit was in 1990). I always enjoy the island enormously. I also like the resort's mellow and low-key atmosphere and the emphasis on nature/snorkling/diving rather than high-end luxury activities. Over the almost three decades, however (and at least three different ownerships), I've seen an unfortunate decline in the quality of management. This...

After reading so many negative reviews about Heron Island I was concerned about poor quality, bird poo, noisy birds and inadequate meals. Heron Island far exceeded my expectations. It was amazing. The turtles and sea life were the highlights and we saw so much wildlife each day. The smell and bird noise were not an issue at all. The accommodation...

After reading negative reviews about Heron Island I was not expecting a 5 star holiday. Heron Island far exceeded my expectations. It was paradise ! From Kelly on the boat trip to Gretel leading the guided naturalist tours, Heron Island was amazing. The turtles were the highlight and we saw so much wildlife which was so exciting. The accommodation and...

Turtles laying and hatching absolutely brilliant, Snorkeling brilliant with so many species to see. Reef walk very informative-well done Rachel we loved it. Heron island is an absolute gem. Staff extremely helpful but A La Carte food more muck on a truck and extremely poor value.

We went to a Heron for the annual ocean swim. Heron is a boat ride from Gladstone and right on the reef. I have never seen nature so literally on the doorstep with turtles, sharks and birds aplenty. The swim is dramatically beautiful and very well organised. The resort is old but practical, the food was quite good. There are...

As other reviewers have said, this is not a 5 star luxury resort with all the trimmings. If that's what you're after you'll be disappointed. But if you want to relax in an amazing natural wonderland Heron Island this is the place for you. Brilliant snorkelling, amazing bird life and of course the turtles! We saw mothers lumbering up the...

The highlight of our trip to heron island was definitely the natural environment. We snorkeled everyday, including excellent guided snorkels of the reef surrounding the island, but mostly we snorkeled directly from the beach. I am also glad we visited during turtle breeding season. Watching mother turtles come onto the beach to nest and watching hatchlings make their run down...

The experiences offered on Heron Is tick EVERY box for the nature loving adventurers out there. We had even more fun and close encounters than we did as youngsters 20 years ago! It's not luxury as most would expect, more an echo friendly wonderful environment allowing close up and personal experiences with the natural world on the reef.

If you're not frightened of spending time with a TV or phone service then this is the place to go. Our Beachside Suit had an uninterrupted view of the lagoon and outer Heron Reef. To be able to sit on our patio and watch the parade of turtles, manta rays and juvenile reef sharks in the crystal clear waters was...
