It's about a 15 to 20 minute walk to the centre of Darwin, but in exchange you get a lovely laidback and cheap hostel with one of the most kind and helpful owners I have ever met! There's a nice little pool at the front, a small basketball court and plenty of places to relax with other backpackers. From the...

It was the most disgusting place I went in 5 months of travel. Don't use the kitchen it is really really dirty, don't sit on the coach they are the same. Luckily we only stayed one night, so I have to confess that I did not take a shower when I saw the bathroom. I also slept with all my...

Stay included free pancakes every morning for brekky. Introdcued Japanese and Canadian tourists to pancakes with lemon juice and sugar instead of jam or chockolate spread - they loved 'em. Well situated, nice double room. Clean good shower rooms and free internet (for us anyway). Off road secure parking for the Harley

For ladies traveling on their own, I'd recommend staying in the girls dorm at this place. It's a bit quieter staying in the girls dorm & keep your food there too! Generally this place can get a little chaotic. Small swimming pool - nice when it gets really warm. The kitchen is TINY for the amount of people staying here....

Well, the price was right. My spouse and I stayed here from April 11-14, 2012. We rented a double room, the "penthouse suite", as one of the "long term" residents jokingly referred to it, on the 2nd floor for $55 a night. Our cheapest room in Aus! It had a sink and, would you believe, a TV in it and...

I didn't read the reviews for this place either, a massive mistake. I let myself in to the hostel, after walking past the group of leering drunken men who were sat in the garden swigging beer, and was met with a disgustingly messy room. Though the people staying in my dorm seemed friendly enough. I was willing to suck up...

This place seems to have very differing reviews, i must say that it wasn't so different from other city backpacker lodges in Australia. It was on the end of the long main road running through Darwin, Mitchel Street, the further you are from the centre, the cheaper the backpackers are. Except that a few of the other Mitchel Street backpackers...

I only managed to find one review of this hostel - after I'd booked it - and it was negative, but I decided to give it a try anyway knowing that I could move if I wanted to. The hostel is situated at the opposite end of Mitchell Street to all the other hostels and bars....so if, like me, you...

I still can't believe I didn't check the reviews before booking this place. Everyone else is absolutely right - Gecko Lodge is horrible. Thank goodness we stayed in a private room, which was upstairs and a little removed from the communal squalor below. With our own (clean) fridge in the room and an acceptable sitting area on the upstairs balcony,...

I too booked this hostel without reading the reviews - a HUGE mistake. I agree with most of the points made below by other unlucky . The only positivie is its location -ts clsoer to Mindels Beach than Darwin CBD- so nice quiet and suburban but thats the only plus. The hostel is worn, amazingly untidy and one step away...
