Travellers' Choice
Not 100, not 500 but 1000 acres of Northumberland moorland and forest play home to this magnificent, elegant Edwardian mansion. That the interiors are almost as dramatic as the exterior says it all. This is very old world grandeur with a modern twist. Bask in the warmth of the reception you receive on arrival, dine at Hadrian's Brasserie, or at the Duke's Grill. Indulge with a Vichy water spa treatment or just flop in the fantastic indoor pool. The great outdoors doesn’t get much greater. After a bracing country walk in the wilds, or round on our championship golf course, retire to the Claret Jug and the 19th Bar for a stiff brandy. Surely you deserve it ?

We visited in July when Covid protocols were well-established. Sadly, although the hotel had marked out one-way systems and other signage around the hotel. these were very-commonly ignored by fellow-guests which made for a less than pleasant stay. Staffing levels in general were inadequate with long waits at reception and in the restaurant. The hotel itself was beginning to feel a bit 'tired' compared with previous visits. On the positive side, both golf courses remain excellent. However, we have not considered Slaley for another break following our most-recent experience.

Dear Golfingtravellers, Thank you for your post following your stay back in July 2020. I am glad to say that once we got up and running with the protocols and staffing back from furlough, the feedback improved dramatically from all residents. We are currently finalising plans for various areas of the hotel to be refurbished and I am delighted you found the golf courses to your satisfaction. Hopefully the refurbishment and recent positive feedback for the second half of last year overall will make you reconsider using us again. Kind regards

As mentioned elsewhere here the COVID restrictions were definitely a let down in that all services were limited. However, I am sure that this is the case everywhere and my family had the most lovely stay during October half term. The location is stunning (would recommend the Adventures team nearby to see a little more) and the rooms are spacious with warm old decor that fits with the hotel. Breakfast was decent (once you worked your way around the restricted menu) and the pool & gym were also great (-again once you managed to get in). Don’t recommend the Claret Jug for food (The salad I ordered turned out to be microwave couscous and a small bit of salmon...) but the staff and drinks were fab! As was the case in the main bar where we spent a couple of perfect evenings - they even had my favourite gin in stock. So mixed review but generally positive, can see how it might go either way for other guests.

We were served by the lovely Vicki for our evening meal and nothing was too much trouble, she even entertained the children. The steak was also great and the merlot too! Rooms were tidy and clean, overall a great stay.

On arrival to the hotel, it’s obviously a beautiful building but the service was very unsatisfactory. After getting to the room - which was gorgeous, as expected for a 4 star hotel, there were a few things we needed to speak to reception about, we tried calling through several times and gave up in the end due to no answer. Went down to reception in person, they said they would accommodate our needs but didn’t. We went to the bar area, food was ok but cold. Waited ages to be served (table service only) and starters came at the same time as mains. There was nowhere quiet in the hotel to chill out, it is half term and understandingly families go away which is great for them to do that, but the hotel didn’t have any areas for adults only - even the whiskey snug was full of children. This would be the perfect area for adults only as it’s only small but a beautiful room. Breakfast was very disappointing, staff were very slow and unfriendly, people arriving after us being served before us, they had ran out of several items and again, cold food. On a positive note, the spa was lovely and treatment was amazing, spa staff very friendly and accommodating. It was a shame to only then being informed of sauna and steam room being closed but this was due to covid and out of the spas control. We only had one pillow each in the room, however housekeeping were fantastic and promptly bought us an extra pillow and stocked up on what we had ran out of (eg. Drinks and shampoo etc). Overall, we had a lovely stay because we didn’t let the service get in the way of our time there. However, we were expecting more for the price and to be able to sit somewhere relaxing. Luckily the area is full of lovely countryside and walks. There’s also a local pub serving delicious, hot food at a very reasonable price, prompt and friendly service.

We have just stayed 2 nights at Slayley Hall. The staff were excellent, nothing was too much for them. Especially the restaurant staff in particular Ben Wiltshire and Sharon, both were constantly smiling even when some guests were making their job difficult. So just wanted to say thank you for making our stay very enjoyable in these difficult times.
