More like a tiny four star hotel! Well appointed room with its own terrace, private parking, very quiet and lovely ladies in charge. Price included a super breakfast on the terrace overlooking the sea. There's a ten minute walk down a path to a little beach for a swim and at least one very good place to eat in Sapri which is eight kilometers away. Wish all B and Bs were like this, terrific!
The people who own this place are really nice, and do things for you which they aren't obliged to. The scenery here is beautiful (we saw foxes and squirrels) and peaceful. You get your own terrace. The rooms and bathrooms are quite big, and are nicely decorated (so it's not like some austere hotel room). The beds are extremely comfortable, good quality and have mosquito nets. Breakfast is simple but good. The 3 staff include one with fluent English, and one with good English. (Between Tropea and the Bay of Naples it's best to have some basic Italian phrases). There are 1 or 2 nice hotel restaurants just below, or a 10 min walk north to 2 pizza restaurants. Do visit Maratea and climb up to the statue of Christ while here, and Fiumicello beach far below the statue is nice. Best use buses for local trips.…
La Casa del Gelso is a 5-Star because of it comfort, sparkling cleanliness, very nice served to order breakfasts, beautiful blue tiles (and other decorations) and the extreme warmth of our hosts, Nadia, and her very interesting and informative brother, Pompeo. And the very reasonable price. I would call it comfortable as opposed to opulent, but clean, quiet and comfortable are all that my wife and I require. We ended up in Acquafredda (about a 20 minute drive north of Maratea on the breathtaking - in every sense of the word - SS18) because the prices and amenities at the inns, hotels and B&B's in or closer to Maratea were not favorable. We did not regret our decision for a second. Acquafredda itself is an intresting town with nice beaches on a lovely bay. There are no ocean views from the rooms, but a lovely view from the porch where breakfasts are served at individual tables. One can walk (if one is quite energetic) down a path to a small ocean beach. The gardens surrounding La Casa are lovely, including the biggest bougainvillea I've ever seen) and the are flower pots and fresh flowers in vases on the tables and in our room. Breakfasts were a variety of fresh rolls, yogurt choices, prosciutto and cheeses, juice and lots of excellent coffee. Our room was, bathroom (and shower) were all decent sized. There was a sort of dressing hall between the bath and bedroom which was handy and contained a safe, fridge and every adequate storage. The room had a tiny t.v. that we never turned on, so I can't report on what was available. Two cautions. WIFI was spotty in our room throughout our stay; better in the reception, common area. There are cats on the premises, but it's apparent that they are generally kept out of the guest rooms because I'm quite allergic to cats and experienced no problems at all. All in all a lovely place to stay - and a great bargain - in an increasingly touristy area. In case you're wondering what all the Maratea fuss is about, the coastline and (just as much) the mountains above, below and around the town are just spectacularly beautiful. And you had better be a very good and confident driver. (If you can take driving at extreme heights, go up to the Christ the Redeemer statue where parts of the road actually extend out over, well, nothing!) Finally, getting to La Casa del Gelso is a bit of a trick the first time. You cannot get there off the main highway through the Cheta resort/restaurant. Rather you must come in from SS18 on the south end of town. At the access point the road is alternating one-way as controlled by stop lights. Near the southern stop light, right on a very sharp curve, the narrow road to La Casa dives down steeply right on the corner. There is a sign for La Casa that's only easily visible if you're heading north. Once you get the turnoff the first time, it's very easy to spot thereafter.…
The B&B has a wonderful terrace with a view over the bay and the nice garden. It is run by a very charming and friendly family. They will serve you breakfast on the terrace and you even get home-made cakes... Pompeio, one member of the family is very resorceful when it comes to hiking and exploring the area. Our room was clean, functional and tasteful. We really enjoyed staying there and it was a highlight of our trip!
Nadia and Pompeio have nice, friendly and very clean rooms with everything you need! A quiet place to stay a few days, in a small suburb . There is parking and the breakfast was very good. There is so much to see in the area, the owners can give a few good tips! Nice Trattoria in walking distance.
