Situated on the lush green banks of the River Periyar, adjoining Dr.Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary (more commonly known as Thattekad Bird Sanctuary) in Kerala, the Periyar River Lodge is an ideal getaway for nature lovers, bird watchers or just about anyone who needs a break from the humdrum of urban life. Not only does Periyar River Lodge offers the guests an impressive connection with nature, but its peaceful and serene surroundings provides the guests with an untainted view of rural Kerala, while still being easily accessible to city of Cochin (65 kms) and the Cochin International Airport (50 kms). The River Lodge itself is aesthetically built. The architectural concept of the Lodge is a 'nalukettu', with a small open courtyard in the middle of the house and the structure of the house built around this courtyard. The Lodge itself has large verandahs around it where guests can relax with a view of the river in front of the house. The Periyar River Lodge has 2 double-bed rooms with attached restrooms with modern amenities. The cuisine, being strictly Keralite, has both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. With our high standards of service, we hope to impart an experience of Kerala, both relaxed and personalized.

We stayed 2 nights - just the 2 of us. Hadn't appreciated on booking that we would have the whole place to ourselves. We felt very welcome and thanks to Robi's attention had a delightfully relaxing couple of days. It's a lovely old restored bungalow with a centre courtyard and 2 a/c bedrooms/ensuite. A terrace faces the river across the beautiful garden. The food was great. We went on an evening boat trip which was excellent- good birds but no elephants ( though they are often seen and there was plenty of evidence of this). We did an early morning birdwatching trip to Thettikkad with Girish which was outstanding. We tried fishing and Eldohse landed a massive 50g Rudd-like thing ! Mosquitoes were not an issue. If you're heavily into birdwatching, you might want longer but 2 days was just right for us.

The best thing about this lodge is that you have it entirely to yourself. There are only two rooms and the second room is kept empty if you are a solitary couple. If two couples know each other and are good friends - only then do they let out the second room. So you have the entire premises to yourself. The lodge is located on the river, and on there is a wildlife sanctuary on the far side of the water. Wildlife often visit the river to quench their thirst and you get to see wild dogs, deer and if you are lucky, elephants too. The food provided is local and home-cooked and enjoyable and there is a special host available full-time to look after your needs. My wife and I had a wonderful stay.

The location of this lodge is just perfect. It has a beautiful calm river right in front of the property and lawns around it. We were there just for a day and it felt very incomplete as this is kind of a location where one can go for walks, boat rides, do bird watching or just sit and absorb the greenery around. Mr Roby and the staff made sure we had a comfortable stay with everything taken care of. We went for bird watching in the sanctuary but ended up seeing many more hornbills and birds in and around the property itself. We particularly enjoyed the morning canoe ride and had lots of fun swinging in the river :) We will definitely be back to explore this wonderful area and do full justice to the bird sanctuary.

A beautiful lodge with a very peaceful situation overlooking the river. We were well looked after by Robby Eldos and cook Lizzy. All extremely comfortable. Loved the bathroom with its own palm tree open to the sky. Robby assisted us to organise a wonderful birdwatching trip and a tranquil canoe ride. Both trips not the cheapest but great experiences.
