We feel the customer service has gone down a bit since our last visit. This is the reason for our 4 star rating.

The location of The Westin Hapuna beach resort is lovely. The sand is powdery soft. In the evening the stars are striking. Grounds are very clean. Property is picturesque.

Our room was very comfortable. We particularly enjoyed the lanai furniture. We had two high chairs with a table to overlook the ocean and a lower patio sofa of sorts, all were practical and comfortable. We appreciated having a small refrigerator.

We stayed on the South side of the property. We heard some construction noise when sitting on the lanai in the morning but it was at a minimum due to our distance away...back up beeping does take away from the tranquil environment at times.

The lack of customer service at the front desk is shocking to us for the quality/price of this resort. The desk staff is consistently cold/indifferent/aloof. No mention of our status, no information given about breakfast, we had to request the details at check in. We experienced a security concern, we did not feel that they took the incident seriously. Upon check out we were not asked "How was your stay?" or told "We hope to see your again in the near future"...nothing, simply a cold transaction to settle the account.

Ginger at the breakfast check in desk was a sweetheart. Eric, our breakfast waiter was amazing. His service was exceptional, so smooth, friendly and attentive. Maria from housekeeping was very kind and helpful.

The breakfast buffet was kept clean and replenished promptly. The selection was very good.

There is a lovely beach hike along the shore if you turn right leaving the ocean portion of the property, you can walk all the way to their sister location. Fantastic views.

Our room had a lot of tiny little ants...but it is a tropical location.

Additional mandatory fees:
$30- resort fee
$25- for self parking

Westin is a good place for Marriott rewards members. I stayed for 6 nights in April 2021. The rooms are specious. we checked in and got upgraded to a one bedroom suite. The suite had large living room and a kitchen with microwave and utencils. It also had a smaller bathroom with living room. You can walk out to the balcony from the living room. Bedroom is pretty large and the master bathroom has a large free standing tub (not sure if this is the correct description of the tub or not :)). According to my wife, although the tub looks nice but it's kinda difficult to get in and out (she used it once). Marriott lifetime status get you free continental breakfast which can be upgraded to make to other dishes (limited choice) if one wants. Staff at the hotel and specifically the breakfast restaurant is very friendly and polite. There are two pools. The adult pool is smaller and early risers have the best chance to score a seat. The lower level kind/family pool is bigger. However, in a non COVID full booking scenario, I think both the pools will be overcrowded, that's my estimation based on occupancy of the hotel. Multi level garage is attached to the hotel and car can be parked for a daily fee. It's quite a bit of trek from the garage to the room, so people with mobility issues, I think, should be dropped at the reception. However, if you do not mind a nice walk, then it's perfectly fine. The resort property is quite large, beach is 2 minutes from any room. Also right next to the beach there is great trail which we used quite frequently for long walks. Lastly, the hotel is very clean. all guests and staffs did follow all COVID protocols like masks, cleaning etc.

Most people are spot on regarding their reviews so I will try to comment on some different things.

I was contacted by email from Guest Services about a week prior to arrival asking if I had any requests. The only thing I asked for was to have the 2 rooms I booked close to each other and to be away from the construction. As a Bonvoy Platinum I was not expecting an upgrade Christmas week but we did get 2 rooms next to each other but we were placed on the lowest floor about as far as possible from the lobby overlooking the construction. Ultimately the walk is less than 5 minutes to everything and we could see the Ocean from above the construction. Not optimal, but not a deal breaker when using points and getting the rooms for free.

I cant say enough great things about the staff at this hotel. Everyone was super friendly and very responsive. The Concierge, Omelet Lady, breakfast staff, pool bartender, valet who offered to golf cart us over to Mauna Kea for diner and guys at Hapuna golf course were fantastic.

No issue on pool chairs with the exception of Adult Pool. Adult Pool only has about 25 loungers and they go quick. Was only able to get 4 loungers around 7am. No problem anywhere else if your not picky.

Had breakfast and lunch most days at the hotel and diner we went out. Most places we went to were about a 20-30 minute drive. I would not advise going into Kona for diner as its a lengthy dark drive. Plenty of great places closer.

Don't expect much night life at the hotel or most places around the island. We had diner reservations every night at 8pm and typically we were last to dine. Bar action at the hotel was subdued when we arrived back from diner.

All in all this was a great vacation due to the staff and facilities at the Westin.

We had a choice between the Westin and the Mauna Kea and I am so glad we picked the Westin. The Mauna Kea is a much more dated property and had a very small beach. Please keep that in mind before picking between the two.

Hotel Age: Newly Renovated and all common areas and rooms are updated and clean. Did not have to think even once about the cleanliness during the precarious times we live in and to me that is a good thing
Hotel Location: Brilliant location on what I consider the most idyllic beach in all of Big Island. The beach is not very long but the sand and water are both so clean and pretty
Pools: I like that the adult pool is separate from the kids pool. The kid pool can get overrun and super busy and the adult pool was more tranquil and felt a whole lot cleaner and safer to use
Room: My husband is a Lifetime Titanium and we had to change from two regular rooms before we were able to use our suite night upgrades. We were in room 631 and it was absolutely beautiful and perfect for our family of 4. Two rooms, microwave, refrigerator, one large lanai and one large balcony and beautiful views over the ocean and sounds of the waves. Bathrooms in all rooms updated with toto toilets
Staff: I found everyone friendly and nice. We used the valet exclusively and were very pleased with the prompt pulling of our car
Breakfast and Food: This is the only thing the hotel can improve. The location is a bit far away from any commercial establishments (15 minute drive) and the food at the property left a lot to be desired. Prices were crazy high and the food quality did not match the price

Mahalo to the Westin Staff and Management for amazing 10 days in a picture perfect location.

This is a great resort. It is very spread out with a number of stairs/steps.

Pros:
Very clean. Excellent, comfortable rooms
Amazing pools (adult & family)
Great beach
Great views
Extremely relaxing

Cons:
Resort fee is somewhat high. $37/night and does not include much.
Yoga classes are an additional fee (Marriott Waikoloa does not charge).
There were non-guests using the amenities (pools). Some would access the resort from the beach and would take towels. There should be a towel system to reduce the number of non-guests using the pools and chairs.
Breakfast surcharge for Platinum members if you wish to upgrade your breakfast from a continental to a hot breakfast. Please don't cut corners on this benefit.

Suggestions:
Request a high room near the center (close to lobby). There is a condo in front of the rooms in the north bank.
Resort is somewhat isolated (which isn't a bad thing). But be prepared to drive to Waikoloa or Waimea if you want some shops and different dining options.

The Westin Hapuna hotel is a great resort for a family vacation. The hotel is located on the northern west part of the Big Island. The area itself is very remote, not habituated and fairly far away from anywhere. We had to travel everyday to eat outside but that was fine as we wanted to get out of the hotel and see things.
The room was comfortable, beds were fine but not great - turns out the local Queen size bed is smaller than the California standard. TV, fridge, hair dryer etc. were there. The toilet, bath tub and shower room was big and had two separate sinks which was great. There was also a nice small balcony.
Pools were awesome, there was an adult pool with a jacuzzi on the upper deck, and a kids pool in the lower deck. Since the hotel capacity was about %30 nothing was too crowded. The children had a lot of fun playing in the pool. There's an easy access path to the hotel's private beach which was really great. On the beach they have sea beds with parasols. There's a little bit of snorkeling on the right end of the beach where near the rocks, nothing fancy. There were much better snorkeling sites elsewhere.
Rooms were cleaned every 4 days, room service was great replacing towels and taking garbage bags.

We had a two queen with ocean view partially blocked by the residence building in front of us, we could still enjoy the mesmerizing sunset. The room is spacious with thoughtful touch like a table surrounded by a good size L-shape sofa which gives a comfy place to lie down to relax or sit down to eat, the tiny table at the entrance with a very cute oval lamp for you to put your key cards, masks, etc like at home. The shutter door is brilliant. It helps drawing ocean breeze to cool down the room and us to enjoy the natural “air conditioner”. Very environmental. My two young adult daughters' favorite spot is the spacious day bed out at the balcony. The staff is courteous, helpful and very friendly. The janitors greeted you whenever you walked by despite that they were busy with their job. I couldn't resist tipping them which usually I don't. Not sure if it's in May or because of covid-19, we never feel crowded at the resort. There're so many lovely spots throughout the resort to rest, appreciating the beautiful views of the beach and the property from different perspectives. Amazingly, there's free laundry with free detergent for the guests. The laundry room is clean and spacious, with numerous top of the line machines that you never had to wait. The whole resort's ambiance is pleasant and low key and very relaxing. We had dinner at the Meridi restaurant. Disappiontinigly we could not get the table with the sunset view, but the food was delicious and worth the money.

We loved the hotel. The beach was beautiful. The food really good. The gym well equipped. The rooms were modern and clean. We liked having a laundry room. The elevators were fast. Coffee at Piko was great every morning. Really enjoyed the vast breakfast menu. Breakfast staff was very friendly and accommodating. We really appreciated Jennifer at the front desk and Shawn Johnson at the wellness center. Cold water stations throughout the hotel were a nice touch. Housekeeping did a great job. Concierge was no help at all. Cabana people did nothing. They would give us the bill for the cabana with suggested gratuity first thing in the morning and then immediately ask us to sign it. Most of the servers were good. Retail clerks were rude. The beach rentals were only 10am - 2pm. Should start sooner so people can take advantage of the smooth water. Pool chairs were sparse. We were told by someone that people not staying at the hotel sneak in to use the pool and take up chairs. Hotel should probably have people check in to get towels and give their room number to eliminate this problem. Small changes would make all the difference in this hotel. All in all we would stay here again.

I live locally so visit here often for stay-cations ;-) Rooms are large with a good sized lanai; bathrooms are especially large and luxurious. Staff is always friendly and helpful. Views are amazing. Having the new 'adults only area' pool is great! Restaurants and food is fantastic. And of course, being on one of the most beautiful beaches is icing on the cake! With the Westin taking over recently, it up-ed their game here in a good way. Parking is a bit far to walk for those who have needs to be closer however valet guys are great.

My family and I are currently staying at the this resort and I am very disappointed with the hotel. We stayed here a couple years ago and had a good stay. There are some things lacking, but in hindsight the room we had made up for those shortcomings.

We're staying in a Premiere Ocean Suite like we did last time, but now that they are done with their construction, half of the hotel rooms look out on a nice bright yellow roof top of the residences they've built. In addition, this time they put us right next to the elevator and across from the housekeeping facilities, so there is noise at all hours of the day. I have kindly requested a room change a couple times and have been told they are at max capacity (which seems odd during COVID times). I am paying full rate for this room (which is not inexpensive) and I have been a loyal member to Marriott for many many years and am currently a Titanium Elite member. So I find it odd that as we return we would end up with this view next to elevator and housekeeping. I would understand if I were coming through some package or using points, but I expect better from Marriott properties when I'm a full revenue loyalty customer.

The hotel itself if very nice and the beach is beautiful. However, the pool and beach amenities are very lacking. There is no service on the beach because it's a public beach, which I can't fault them for, but they really should come up with a good alternative to having to walk all the way up to their poolside restaurant. The pool is cold and the pool area is quite basic and really too small for the size of the resort.

The restaurants are fine, but it's been hit or miss, and I've had some pretty tough meals here. Last night I had a braised short rib that had the literal taste of latex in it. Paying Hawaii resort prices for average to below average food does not feel great.

Figures, as I'm writing this I just had a housekeeping person barge into my room after barely knocking once. It kind of feels like it's one of those trips with a comedy of errors, but it all was definitely fixable if they just paid attention. I hope they figure things out, but I will make sure to check before I ever consider coming back here again.
