In the 60's, here it appears and opens, that would become "The first beach hotel in the Algarve". At the seafront planted, it served as inspiration, named after the great discoverer, who five centuries ago discovered the sea route to India, thus being baptized on August 1, 1960 of "Hotel Vasco da Gama" applied in a metaphorical way, because this would be the first to be born in this region. The Hotel Vasco da Gama offers 186 rooms, which are all equipped with all modern amenities, such as swimming pools, tennis courts, children's playground, mini golf, gym, Wi-Fi internet, parking, private gardens, restaurants and bars. A wide range of services, as well as breathtaking views of the sea, where the main concern is nothing more than the comfort and well-being of those who stay there, or unforgettable moments.

Currently 9 day's in to an 11 night stay here, The location is superb front row on the beach, and the surrounding area and town are nice.

There are several boardwalks that lead out to the rear of the hotel and a beautiful sandy beach, and several beach cafés & restaurants, and a few hundred yards away there are lovely pine forests with nice walk or bike trails in them.

The nearby town of Villa real de Santo Antonio has several supermarkets Including a Lidl & Mcdonalds and is around 30-45 minute walk or 10 minutes in the car, you can also catch the ferry over to Spain across the river Guadiana €1:90 each way, and only a 15 minute crossing.

Ayamonte where the ferry docks is a lovely place, and well worth a look round and tobacco is a lot cheaper ( Be careful what time you go) They have siesta around 1pm until 4:30 ish so some shops maybe closed and Spain is 1 hour in front of Portugal so take that into consideration, ferry from Portugal is on the half hour so the 9:30am is a good one to catch, and coming back it's on the hour from Ayamonte.

The Hotel itself is dated but clean and the pool area and bar is OK,
The rooms are basic with a cramped small bathroom minibar/fridge "but no kettles in the room" which is a bit of a let down.
If you get a room facing the road there is no sun on the balcony all day and is cold in the winter months, it's probably worth paying the extra for a sea view, (the rooms are cleaned daily)

The biggest disappointment for me was the food, breakfast they have a large variety of stuff to eat, sausage, beans, eggs etc, continental breakfast fruit and cerial, but the sausage and beans are poor quality and the milk for the cerial is at room temperature instead of chilled.

The evening meals once again they have plenty of variety, however it's the same variety every night fish, meat and veg potatoes and vegetables..... No spice or curries etc, an occasional curry night or different themed night would be good.

And you can only drink water, at the evening meal there is no juice or soft drinks.

Overall for what we paid it was an OK hotel, but with small changes, especially in the restaurant, it could be a lot better.

Finally it would be good for the hotel to reply to the reviews, instead of just sending automated replies.

Dear Mr. Regarding the hotel reply to reviews, we normaly have a automatic answer for the good reviews. When some matters need a speciall treatment we also do it, and i assure you that all reviews are readed. regarding the restaurant, we are not an all inclusive hotel, that why in the evening meal we only offer watter, all the rest must be payd at a resonable price ( comparing with all the european countries). About the tematic nights i will present this sugestion to our manager. The rooms if you book a standart room they have around 17sqm, if you choose a superior room 27sqm, that would solve your problem about the size off the bathroom. Without further ado, we reiterate the satisfaction in serving you in this period and the desire to review it as soon as possible, as our greatest reason for being is the well receive of all our customers. We offer our cordial greetings. Sincerely, Rafael Oliveira

The hotel is well situated in Monte gordo, particular if you are wanting easy access to the beach.
The room we had was a good size ( not sea facing) clean and comfortable. Bathroom was a good size and the shower worked well and plenty of hot water.
Food was all buffet, breakfast had plenty of choice, evening meal consisted of a choice of soups,an extensive salad bar. Main meals always included at least two fish dishes. Plenty of fresh fruit as well as gateaux and ice-cream for dessert.
The hotel decor is a little tired in places but they were in the process of refurbishing some of the rooms.
Staff were helpful.
The train station is about a 15min walk , but the train's are reasonable priced and makes day trips to Faro or Tavira very accessible.

We hadn't been to the Algarve before so were looking for a comfortable hotel with good amenities for a week's stay in early February, far from cold and rainy England. Farooq Airportbus just 45",away
This is a truly lovely hotel. Our room on 4th floor with sea view (£50 supplement) was spacious and accommodating. The equivalent of a dressing room with big wardrobe and a day bed along with a well appointed bedroom and generous bathroom with bath and shower over and two wash handbasins. The lighting levels were excellent. It was a tad chilly initially but air conditioning/heating quickly remedied that.
Meals in the large dining room were a highlight. You could take breakfast in the upper dining area which was less crowded (65% occupancy during our stay) or in the main dining room.
All meals were buffet service. The choice & variety of dishes was very good and we had some truly delicious items eg roast kid or veal. Vegetarians had to made do with pasta dishes but for the rest of us there was a choice of two soups, several fish dishes and meat every evening with a wide range of salads, fresh fruit and cakes for dessert.

Public rooms for cards, reading, a Bridge Club (organised by Dutch guests in the bar upstairs) were gracious and very attractively appointed. The main bar was wood panelled with cosy lamps to put one in mind of an ocean-going liner. Evening entertainment was mostly "crooners"; pleasant enough. We also had a magician one evening who entertained us for over an hour, shades of Tommy Cooper. Bar staff were skilled at mixing cocktails and provided courteous and attentive service.

There was a heated pool and plenty of loungers for daytime use. The Atlantic beckoned and it was just possible to swim in the breakers; temperatures on the
Tuesday reached low 20s.
We hired bicycles (just 3 euros/day during the winter months: 1 Nov to end April) and also took the local train - slow but very cheap. Don't forget to ask for a discount of you're over 65 years of age.

Of course we crossed over to Ayamunte in Spain which is just a short ferry ride from Villa Real (the next little town) and explored the fortress town nearby. We also cycled to Tavira (25km - about 90"away) which is delightful. Next time we shall look at some of the inland towns along this stretch of the eastern Algarve.

After three stays of 10 days we did the month of February this year. The hotel was continuing with the upgrade of various facilities in the rooms and around the grounds. None of these had an adverse effect on our stay. We had a few minor complaints which were dealt with speedily and efficiently, The food was as good as ever with superb selection at all meals, All staff carried out their tasks skilfully with good humour. The many staircases around the complex can cause problems for guests with mobility issues, A perfect location on an impressive beach. Never experienced a stay in poor weather which could leave guests with little to do, I really recommend this hotel for the older element, and will be returning many times in the future

Visited this hotel over the New Year on a half-board basis. The breakfast was fine although there was no variation but the evening meal was pretty bland. I ate out on five out of the seven nights including New Year's Eve. Everything was clearly aimed at the elderly clientelle including afternoon tea and biscuits but had little to appeal to anyone outside that group although I am almost 60. My room was on the ground floor at the front with a view of the main road. It was constantly in the shade so the balcony wasn't really usable. The staff were polite when I spoke to them but none of them went out of their way to speak first ro wish me a good morning including the restaurant waiters. Perhaps my experience was purely down to the time of year but I saw nothing to entice me back.

First of all thank you for your stay at our hotel, we are sorry that you did not have the best stay in our unit. At the restaurant we try to offer varied menus, which run for 21 days. We don't make food with lots of spices because it might not be to the liking of all our customers. but we will inform our chef about this. All of our employees know that our main goal is customer satisfaction, and I regret the lack of sympathy from a colleague, as this is not our way of working. Hoping to have a new opportunity to improve your opinion of us I wish you a happy 2020

The most value of this hotel is the location a few meters from the beach.

But....the majority of the furniture is really old, from the 50's, and some parts of the hotel need to be modernized.

For the price (3 star hotel) it is really expensive compared with 4 star hotels located 100m away and really new.

Also the breakfast that was different from the other hotels because there was natural orange juice, this time they changed to artificial orange juice. Its a piety because those small details make the difference

Also the room doors (has they are old and do not have absorbers) make a big impact and a lot of noise when they close

We stayed for four weeks in January and had a comfortable sea view room, very well serviced daily by friendly staff. Clean linen and towels, but only one armchair and very small, narrow balcony. We had to ask for loan of a kettle. Breakfast buffets were good (decent range of continental and cooked foods, fruit, fresh bread and rolls etc) but one aspect that spoiled it for us was guests handling food and sneaking it into napkins and pockets to take away. Disgusting. Dinner times were crowded at opening time with too many people trying to find seats and fighting to be first for access to the buffet. Food, although plentiful, could have been better labelled, warmer, and a wider range of puddings would be good. The hotel is very well located near the beach and boardwalk. We spoke to several guests who loved the place and return year after year.

We love Monte Gordo and when we come here we always stay at the Vasco da Gama.
The staff are lovely, very helpful. For instance since our last visit here before the pandemic my wife underwent major spinal surgery which has left her with slight mobility issues which made it a little difficult getting in and out of the bath. We mentioned this at reception and they informed us that some of the rooms had walk in showers and if we e-mail in advance before our next visit one would be allocated to us. They even gave us a key to one of the rooms so we go go and see one of the new showers.
The Vasco da Gama Hotel has very spacious grounds, a large pool area, tennis courts, crazy golf and if the weather is poor the ground floor of the hotel has many sofas and chairs where you can relax and read a book or listen to some music.
The best thing in the hotel is downstairs, the best breakfast in Portugal is served up in the dining room. I kid you not it is worth coming here just for the breakfast, so much choice and all delicious. My only complaint would be the forks are too small, they are only suitable as cake forks or for children.
Can't wait to come back.

Went on holiday for a family vacation which we was initially looking forward to, however we was sorely disappointed. I was surprised to find that it was more like gods waiting room than a hotel. Everyone was within the 50 - 100 bracket. We was also surprised that this is apparently a kid friendly accommodation despite the only attraction for children was a makeshift childrens play area and a freezing pool.

The food was the worst part, every day it was slightly different though no option for vegans and not a lot of choice if you was vegetarian. The salad bar was good however there was often a mix of utensils which was bad if you had an allergy. Granted this is not the hotels fault but it would have been helpful if there was some kind of sign or instruction so there was no cross contamination of food. I really struggled eating at the buffet due to a lactose allergy so ended up eating very bland meals. So would not recommend if you have allergies or intolerances or vegan / vegetarian.

The members of staff were polite and did try and make our stay comfortable but what let it down was having to ask front desk to ensure my room was cleaned as this had not been done previously for two nights (think they may have not realised as we had a change of rooms). Once I had asked front desk this was then sorted out quickly which I appreciate.

We was given a apartment opposite the car park which overlooked another hotel. This was fine though my window was directly facing peoples balconies so often had to be wary of getting changed. The shower was also very small. I would say that this hotel is best suited for over 60s as this is what appears to be their main clientele. Everyone was quite old and the facilities matched this.

On the last day we was served mayonnaise which was 3 months out of date. Granted it wouldn’t kill you but serving out of date food of any kind is wrong.

There is very little to do around the area aside from a few shops and restaurants though again these do not really facilitate intolerances nor allergies, all serving the same kind of cafe style food.

It is safe to say I will not be returning to this hotel.

We have stayed many times at the Hotel Vasco da Gama - this was the first time for Christmas. We really enjoyed our stay, the staff were excellent. Christmas evening meal was excellent with wine and water included with a four course dinner. Everyone ate at the same time so the staff worked very hard to serve everyone. Dinner normally is buffet style. We were blessed with excellent weather.
I would recommend not going down to evening meal until after 7.30pm, up until then it is very busy in the restaurant and food is regularly replenished during the times of the evening meal service.

you can always ask reception! But VdG has a huge salon with nice couches, a room with a big billiard table, a TV room where you can also store luggage (but it is not a luggage room!) with lots of games. Near the pool there is changing facility, tennis table and a spa. At the pool is the pool bar that serves easy food. So, no worries.
