Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A musty smell in the hallways of the outdated hotel. The restaurant is clean and has good views of the Kymijoki River. Reasonable salad bar and food - maybe a little salty. Clean toilets. Parking areas are good.

We visited the horse races in Mikkeli. It was a big start in Sunday, where they tried to make a new world record. They did not succeed, although Face Time Bourbon, maybe the best horse for the time, participated.

A night stop here while in Finland on business. The place is a comfortable hotel with spa facilities overlooking a beautiful lake. The rooms are comfortable if a bit dated (very 80’s!!) but clean and functional and ours had the advantage of lake frontage.

The spa was far more modern with saunas, jacuzzis and a nice swimming pool.

I would say that the food was the highlight however, being both delicious and quite reasonably priced for Finland (where nothing is cheap!)

Reindeer starters and chicken mains were both fantastic and the burgers didn’t look half bad either!!

Overall a good experience!

Nice pictures of the rooms on the hotel's website. Too bad they are not true. Single room absolutely creepy. In the room, a narrow 80 cm bed, a dirty sofa and desk chair, a stained bedspread and a shower and toilet covered with plastic carpet. The room was apparently renovated sometime in the 80s. I feel really cheated, because the daily price of the room was more than 100e. The room corresponded to a cheap motel accommodation. I have seen similar ones in Eastern European countries. I do not recommend this hotel to anyone. If you need to visit Heinola, it's worth driving a short distance and staying overnight in Vierumäki.

Staff is rude at the teception. There was no bathrobe or slippers in my room. Called reception and they promised to bring them. Never happened. Have to go looking for maid and try to find items myself.

If you take halfboard, you can not choose apetiser and main coarse from the menu. You have to take what they offer. These things were not in the menu at all!!! They try to make you eat ”muikkuja”. Uneatable fish with bones. Your can not pay the differens between different apetisers. If you change your apetiser, you have to pay hole amount. They should at least tell you when you book your trip that you wont get foods from the menu!!!
Horrible rude.

A lovely, family-owned spa. Excellent views to the river (that looks like a large lake). Very friendly staff and few visitors (at least day-time on Wednesday and Thursday, when we visited). Just one wish: In the spa area there's a lot of natural light and moisture, so it feels totally useless that the plants there are plastic - there are so many real plants that would thrive there for sure!

Sorry to say, but the new spa area and the old hotel are from two different worlds! The spa was nice and stylish, but staying in the hotel ruined the experience. It almost seemed like these two facilites would be owned and run by two different owners. The hotel seems more like a motel, even though the price was as high as in a luxury spa hotel.
We stayed one night in late January, and it was certainly low season and most of the hotel was empty. Still, we were given a worst room ever with very ugly view over the parking lot. So, unless you pay for superior, don't expect a lake-side room.
The room had very old and worn-out decor and it was in fact very dirty. The bathroom was worst with plastic floors in 70s colours and dark mold in the shower. The minibar was removed (there was supposed to be a vending machine for cold drinks in the hall, but it was, surprise, surprise broken. Two soft drinks from the bar cost almost 10 euros), the chair had visible stains and the remote control was greasy. The hotel book has ads on pre-Christmas parties in late January and some information in the book was dated.
The service in the hotel reminded me of a hotel school. Once we entered the spa we found out that you needed coins for the lockers, so we had to return to the room to get that. The spa was nice, but minor details spoiled it a bit, like the fact that hot and cold walking pools were neither hot nor cold but kind of luke warm.
A friend had adviced us not to dine in the hotel. Well, we did, as walking several kms into the town during a snow storm did not appeal.A big mistake. I'm not particularly picky, but the food was worse than in a gas station cafeteria. I ordered Devil's chicken with risotto and got obviously frozen food warmed in a microwave. "The devil's chicen" (19 euros) was plain chicken with industrially made sweet chili souce. The "risotto" was actually just risella - plain boiled rice, not other incredients added. We complained to the waiter, but she explained that the "chef" had answered that the risotto was made "according to the instructions". First, I serioudly doubt that there was a chef, secondly, I'm sure the rice was boiled according to the instructions in the box. This, however, does not make it a risotto. I was surprised that we were not given any refund or even free cup of coffee. I just checked the menu and noticed that they have luckily changed the menu to include "vegetable rice" instead of risotto.
The best was yet to come. We returned to our room and were ready to go to sleep. Unfortunately my husband touched the light switch and almost got an electric shock. All the electricity and lights in the room (and in fact the entire wing) were out. The reception gave us another room next door, but changing rooms and collecting our things in dark at 1 am in the night did not exactly meet my expectations of a hotel room that we paid 130 euros in a small town out of season. We would have assumed a better room and a refund for this, but the new room was as bad as the original. The mold issue was also evident and no wonder there was problems with electricity - the lamp in the new room was wierdly fixed with a regular tape. Not very safe. We got a refund of 9 euros when cheking out, but it was still clearly overpriced for what it was.
Just a hint: for the same price you pay for Kumpeli hotel standard (more like economy) room, you will get a luxury hotel in Helsinki or a room in a proper spa hotel like Långvik in Kirkkonummi. Can't believe such a hotel is still up and running. A majority of spa guest seemed to be day-visitors, a wise and recommended strategy. Go for the spa if you are in town, but stay somewhere else, such as Scandic Vierumäki. Dine in Kettu and Kana in Heinola town centre and forget the restaurant in Kumpeli.

This hotel is quite outdated and the rooms are not that comfortable. But still the service was really nice and kind. Also the lunch was nicely served. For meeting purposes the equipments are not working well, wouldn't book a meeting here.

Hello, this is a difficult one as this was the first time I ever visited the place. I did stay in Heinola a lot during my younger years.
About the hotel, it seems to be an older one and there are no minibar, no 24h staff, but still if you will get great service, at least what I got, a nice friendly woman there. I had kinda no problem as I'm a finn, but still if I would have had late check-in this time, I think there was no problem. The bets thing for me was the scenery and balcony. 150e for 2 but it was lowered 120(?) or something, In any case, again, great service, but you cannot expect it to have 24h. You do have a key code at a door somewhere. If you are going to Heinola's "evening night"... you need to remember it . It is not the latest door or so.
Like said, in any case, if you are visiting here from abroad, very nice in a summer especially. Rooms may seem a bit... I dunno, not tasty, but quite ok with size.

3+ or 4 stars.

PS. Some noice in the morning.

Stayed one night with very late arrival. Despite the reception being closed at that time, the staff were very helpful and we accessed our room easily. Moderate size room on the parking lot side of the building, clean and functional. Decent breakfast.
