The Hotel Mesikämmen is a good example of what 30 years of monopoly position beside a major attraction can do. The Ähtäri has two of the rare Chinese Giant Pandas in Europe. The only hotel beside the park is the Hotel Mesikämmen. And everything in the hotel is a test of how little can they get away with: minimum breakfast buffet catering mainly for a Finnish audience (salty), stale buns, no honey for tea, and so on. Lamps in the rooms and hallways are working sporadically. Room cleaning didn't even shake the pilows or hover the room...
We came to see the pandas at Ahtari Zoo and were really satisfied with our stay. The hotel is just across the street from the Snowpanda House. The package deal with zoo tickets, swimming pool and accommodation was good. The hotel dates from the 1970's which is apparent in the architecture - I loved it! The rooms are quite basic, but all with a small wooden terrace facing the beautiful lake. The spa cannot compete with specially-built waterparks but for a hotel swimming pool it was great, especially with kids. The breakfast was OK, and in the evening we were very happy with the restaurant service and food.
This hotel really needs renovation. Double room rate with breakfast was 129 euros. Expensive - considering that the hotel is in awful condition. Needs badly a helping hand. No air condition. Breakfast could not be more basic. Reception staff was very busy and seemed stressed. Hotel is beautifully situated near a lake with free parking. Perhaps the basic/low condition is enough when you visit the near attractions with kids, but still the price is too high for that.
Arkilounas ravintolassa kouluruokatasoinen, hinta ei (aikuinen ja yli 12-vuotiaat 14,90 e). Ilmoitettu menu ei pitänyt paikkaansa. The weekday lunch at the main restaurant was like lunches in Finnish public schools. Not value for money (adults and over 12 years old 14,90 e).
It was rather cold inside the rooms even despite we swithed on the heating just upon the arrival. The restaurant and the sauna are very good. Not very easy to find the main building. Good view on the lake from the balcony. No slippers in the room, no ash-tray.
