Rarely do we go back to the same place twice but after our first visit in 2019 we knew we would have to return to Buckingham Place. The place was as magic as ever with Nick and his team pulling out all the stops to make our stay as fantastic as the first, despite all the challenges brought on by the pandemic and the current economic situation. Everything is outstanding from the rooms, to the food and the service. Couldn't recommend enough and a big thank you from us for a wonderful and memorable time.

Great to see you again... Thank you for returning, I can think of no greater compliment than to welcome guests back, especially those who rarely return. With the many spectacular destinations, hotels and with only one lifetime, it’s a wonder anyone one returns anywhere! Your review made me smile, I imagined the previous one would be our last for a while. And, its title was enough quite honestly, but thanks nonetheless; you reassure travelers in your footsteps that economic or other woes facing the island need not be a barrier to a happy holiday. Behind the scenes of Sri Lankan hospitality we all are paddling madly like proverbial swans, but nothing is too much trouble for us and we need you now more than ever. It was a pleasure and privalege to host you again and hope it won’t be for the last time. Thanks for your excellent company, valuable custom, this ultimate accolade and, for your kindness and empathy for us all. We’re closed for 3 weeks essential maintenance and to take a break. Then, we’ll open for intrepid travelers as usual so please… keep on spreading the good word! Please come back again (and again!), until then but always, have a blissfully happy life. Warm regards & respect Nick & the Team

Well this was such a great spot! Beautiful spacious clean rooms with lovely effective and quiet AC. Lovely main restaurant area looking out over the beautiful pool and the sea beyond. There is a little path down to the deserted beach which is glorious. The food was amazing and service first class. Nick the owner came round all the tables in the morning and evening and had a little chat with his guests. He is such an interesting character, looks a little bit like Jack Nicholson, and, as we told him, really needs to write an autobiography! Quality place and we hope to return some day.

Perfect timing... Today sees our first offseason empty night since we reopened last November. I can think of no nicer way to end the season, than by reading and replying to what will probably be our last fabulous review for a while. Thank you, your magnificent thumbs humbles us and says it all. As for Jack Nicholson? He’d sure sell more copies of an autobiography than me, despite me being more youthful and better looking! In short, great reviews are the hotels lifeblood, they bring our next guests while motivating us to keep on keeping on. Thank you for your review, it could not be more appreciated or better timed - when fellow travelers start thinking about a midseason break. I’m off to the pool with a nice bottle of wine, but before I go I send heartfelt thanks from us all, for your good custom, fine company and Special support. Have a healthy and blissfully happy life. Warm regards and respect, Nick & the Team

This is a wonderfully relaxing place to stay. We started with the lovely surprise of an upgrade to the honeymoon suite. We ha a beautiful spacious room, with a very comfortable bed, and an enormous open area bathroom, complete with coconut palm. Just sitting by the pool is wonderful, with the sound of breakers from the ocean below. A range of birds flit through the garden, or drop to the pool. The food is great with a good selection of local and international dishes. Breakfast is when you want it - a great idea. I particularly enjoyed the bacon curry at breakfast, and the seafood lamprais (fish and rice in a banana leaf) for dinner. It seems nothing is too much for the staff. They were all so welcoming and attentive. The difficult decision might be where to sit to drink the evening cocktail. So many great choices. It's so relaxing, you won't want to go out, but we did two trips. One was to see buffalo curd being made, and the other was for an early morning boat ride at Kalametiya. When we left, the staff lined up like a guard of honour. It was quite touching. Nick has built a great place, with his staff. Highly recommended.

As recommendations go… ‘Possibly the nicest hotel we have stayed in’ is about as good as they get, on behalf of us all, sincere thanks for your exceptionally kind compliments and high recommendation. I was at a loss as to who had written in but eventually figured it out, prompting me to recall your stay fondly. Seeing guests relax and get the best from the place I find personally rewarding. More so however, when they engage with us and scratch the surface of where they are and with whom they're staying. I enjoyed your stay too, especially a morning spent nattering away with you. You travelled to Sri Lanka at a time of its peoples struggle for change, in spite of adverse media coverage you came as planned. As I’m sure you're aware, soon after you flew home things took a turn for the worse in Colombo. To my knowledge however, international travelers were not caught up in events, and whilst the island continues to face economic and political woes, the right to peaceful protest (and protection of it) prevails. I hope only fond memories of your trip endure, and, that you will recommend Sri Lanka and us for years to come. If the island is to pivot in the right direction it’ll need all the help (and dollars!) it can get. Thank you for your valuable good custom, excellent company and for this really super review. You were adorable guests so we’d love to see you again. I wish you happy travels and a blissfully happy life. Warm regards and respect, Nick and the Team

We somehow managed to miss Buckingham Place when booing our accomodation but from talking to some people it came highly recommended for its food too. And it didnt disappoint. It was quiet as we were in the low season but we had a really nice meal and cocktails prepared by the team. The tuna salad with mango and avocado was particularly good. Our only disappointment was that we didnt see Buckingham Place when originally booking our stay in the area as the hotel looks beuatiful! We will make sure to book in the next time we are in the area!

A lovely review… Thank you for your generous compliments for our restaurant and hotel. I’m delighted you had a pleasant evening and that we lived up to expectations, we can only hope that next time you’re in the area you will come to stay, or at the very least return to Oceanfront for some more of the same! For now, thank you for your valuable good custom, and, for taking time out to support us with this lovely review. Best wishes and happy travels! Nick & the Team

Having been fortunate enough to stay in many luxury hotels all over the world, it’s hard for me to put my finger on exactly why this place is up there as my very favourite and what exactly makes it feel so special. There are so many things about Buckingham Place that quite simply delight. The barefoot luxury, tastefully eccentric, tropical jazz club vibe of the Oceanfront building immediately relaxes you and the attention to detail that has been paid to the design of this boutique hotel-cum-homestay is evident throughout. The colourful decor, moody shuttered lighting, bright sofas and comfortable sun loungers combine to create a truly amazing space that is a pleasure just to be in. That is before you mention the beautiful infinity pool with its horizon views and the stunning beach that is just a few yards away. The service we received was absolutely impeccable from beginning to end with there-in-a-second attentiveness from all staff, proactive deliveries of water and fruit juices throughout the day (a nice touch) and amazing flexibility and openness on dining options. Due to some awkward flight times, we requested as late a checkout as possible and were happy to offer additional payment to do so. Kalpa, the general manager, was happy to oblige well beyond our expectations and refused to take any extra payment. This made our final day so much easier and more relaxing and simply would not happen at any of the larger cookie-cutter chain resorts. Nick, the hotel owner, was also very friendly and always keen to ensure guests were enjoying their stay, though it was his two dogs that may have stolen the show for us. The food and drinks were top notch on both days. I can recommend the Village Manhattan cocktail especially, although the Pina Colada got equally rave reviews from my sweeter-toothed travel companions. Breakfast in particular was stellar and I am a huge fan of the a la carte, order as much as you like service style. It is unusual to find this for a breakfast that is included in the standard room rate. The Sri Lankan curry selection at dinner was also excellent and was one of those meals that you just don’t want to end. Finally, the room was huge with a very comfortable bed and sunset views over the lagoon. The laidback luxury style continued with polished concrete floors, functional wooden furniture and a semi-open air, almost ludicrously large bathroom. All of it unfussy but tasteful. Overall Buckingham Place is an absolute diamond of a hotel and I cannot wait to return. My only regret is not staying for longer this first time round.

We wish… you could have stayed longer too, but, we could not have wished for cooler, more easy going guests or a more spectacular review - so thank you. In my view, ‘An absolute gem, we will 100% return’ is all anyone contemplating a stay with us should ever need to read. If the title alone doesn’t do it, by the time a wavering traveler reads to the bottom they’ll want to book immediately and stay nowhere else – your review is brilliant and it made us smile this morning! Thanks also; for coming to stay (albeit too briefly), your valuable good custom, excellent good company and this absolute rave review. I’m really happy knowing you enjoyed yourselves and got the best from us, and that the message of this place hasn't changed. Until next time, I wish all of you a blissfully happy life… Warm regards & respect, Nick

All the reviews are true. Highlights for us were the beautiful pools with monkeys popping by for a drink! The service, nothing wasn't ever too much trouble, the staff are just amazing, a real credit.. Water and complimentary juices round the pool, if you want to book a spa treatment they come to you... its faultless. The food - we tried everything and loved it all - my daughter, she is fussy and boy did Nick try everything for her, they even made their own chocolate sauce for pancakes. Even giving her beans on toast for supper one evening (sorry all!) We enjoyed two excursions - one to Galle and one to the national park, the hotel organised the drivers who were lovely, punctual and good drivers which is really important to me as driving can be a little crazy! There are some issues in Sri Lanka at the moment, however the hotel work tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure that the guest isn't affected at all. Two back up generators kick in with any power cuts. It is a wonderful time to visit Sri Lanka and support the locals that work in the hotel. Any improvements - well there can always be one - for me I would have preferred more comfortable chairs on the balcony. However I did tell Nick this and he did offer to change them for me - I declined as I wouldn't want to be such a burden, however I know that they would have done it happily, what more can you ask. This is small boutique hotel, however, not too small to be intrusive, they have the balance right. We would love to return some time in the future.

Super lovely guests! Thank you for coming to stay, and for this resounding endorsement of previous reviewers. Being super lovely yourselves you were a delight to host, and your detailed account of your stay is helpful in several ways. The most obvious being, it is first class (thank you!) and so helps to maintain the hotels prominent ranking. Second, it reassures us we remain on track, but beyond this, you assure fellow travelers we will rise to their challenges too, even if that means beans means Heinz! I must admit being taken aback a little, discovering menus would not adequately appeal to your daughter, but she was a terrific sport (hi to her) and in the end, very easy and a pleasure to please. As for swapping chairs on your balcony? Yes, we’d have been only too pleased to. Our challenge is, convincing sweet guests like you that nothing is too much trouble here nor a burden to anyone! Your good custom and kind support contribute directly to sustaining the livelihoods of nearly 50 Sri Lankans working hard at the hotel, plus, 100 or so of their dependents. Indirectly, you have supported local fishers, farmers, suppliers and drivers – I could go on. I thank you again on everybody’s behalf as much as my own, as I too must earn my keep. I truly hope we will be welcoming you all back one day. In the meantime, I send heartfelt thanks from a swelteringly hot paradise, where we pray for some off-season rain!! Please do come again. Warm regards & respect Nick & the Team

We were hotel guests with Nick and his team for 5 nights. We would have loved to stay longer. Every single member of the staff was incredibly attentive. From the beginning and at all times we were served warmly. The whole stay and well-being is meticulously thought out. From housekeeping, service, kitchen, spa, concierge etc everything was first class. The facilities are fantastic too, huge rooms, lovely restaurant and amazing pool…and omg…the view. The effort, motivation and energy these staff members invest in their work needs to be honoured. So, we would like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt thanks to the entire team and wish them continued success. Keep it up. Stephanie and Lisa

A ridiculously beautiful review - thank you!! Whether a review could be written more eloquently or with greater passion only time will tell, but as I ponder the question I’m over the moon this morning having read yours. Whether a reviewer could go to greater lengths to reassure those in their footsteps or, recognise and reward a team more resoundingly I doubt. What is certain, is our pride in what we do and gratitude for this and every inspirational review we are blessed to receive. They make our collective effort all the more worthwhile, and in so doing, sustain us and make us smile! Thank you for touching our lives for 5 days and for supporting us magnificently. Imagining more pleasant, empathetic and easy going guests is impossible. Therefore, please return as soon as you can as quite simply, this place was built for wonderful, stand-out travelers like yourselves. Thank you for your valuable good custom, excellent good company and of course, this ridiculously beautiful review!! I wish you happy and safe onward travel, and, a blissfully happy life. My thanks are on behalf of us all… Warm regards & respect, Nick & the Team

Well worth the travel to what is a truly lovely resort. We spent eight wonderful nights at the Buckingham Place, arrived midday and both rooms were available so no waiting for the customary 3:00pm access to the rooms like other hotels. Access was provided straightaway for WIFI in all guest areas including rooms and was it fast which was a credit once again to the infrastructure at the hotel. We stayed half board with fresh cooked meals both morning and evening, lovely service and very attentive staff that just couldn’t do enough for the guests. The cuisine is a choice of local Sri Lankan food and other cultures including European but when there wasn’t anything suitable for our daughter they stepped up to the mark and made her something unique and to her pallet…great customer service. The hotel organised the transfer to and from the hotel which was excellent and also organised two trips out on separate days which were faultless. Driver was excellent on all occasions, I would certainly recommend the hotel arranging trips. The pool area was awesome and peaceful with a wonderful pool and an unbelievable view…we spent many an hour at that pool and once again the staff were always there should you need a drink or food. All in all a great eight nights which can only be put down to hard work of Nick and his team of staff but one special mention to the masseur in the Health Spa, she certainly knows how to give a great massage.

Awesome enthusiasm! Rarely do opportunities arise to thank guests in person for their Trip Advisor support before they depart. This was one such occasion, and what struck me was, although I hadn’t actually seen your review I somehow knew you’d be kind to us. You have not disappointed! Thanks once again on behalf of us all. Your eloquent, enthusiastic, detailed review, covers every aspect of your stay even down to the lengths we go to for the sake of a happy guest. Your kind words are really helpful for those in your footsteps, whilst helping to sustain what we do here, especially from a motivational perspective. You were a delight to host, all of you, and we relished the challenge of going off menu at times for your daughter – sorry we couldn’t find the Nutella please tell her! As you probably noticed, the hotel is a broad ‘church’ in terms of welcoming solo travelers, couples, small families, friends traveling and so on. People from all walks of life and of all ages and nationalities come together to relax, unwind and enjoy themselves under one roof. I am delighted that our mission 'to please all’ continues to do just that for small families too, and proud to read that several members of the team stood out for you and exemplified this. That you took a peek at other rooms hints of a return – we’d be thrilled if so. On a personal note; thank you for inviting me to pull up a chair on occasion and for your interest in how the hotel came to be. Thanks also, for heaping praise on me – I am humbled. Thank you bringing valuable good custom to Buckingham Place and for this super-positive review; and last but not least, thanks for being awesome guests whom we’d love to see again!! Until next time, fond regards to you all. Nick & the Team

Buckingham Place made such an impression on us first time round that we really couldn't wait to return again. And we weren't disappointed. It was just as great as we remembered it. From the moment you arrive to the moment you leave you couldn't be better looked after. The staff are just fantastic. A big thank you to them all especially Kalpe and the other front of house guy who kindly organised our onward transportation for us (sorry that I have forgotten his name). Buckingham Place is blissfully relaxing and the attention to detail is astounding. It is more than just a hotel, it is a labour of love and Nick is a great character who makes you feel incredibly welcome and at home. That combined with beautiful grounds, an infinitely pool, stylish decor, decent cocktails and great food really leaves you wanting for nothing.

Special Guests! Our season so far, has been blessed by the return of many former guests, more so than during any season I can remember. Almost every day since reopening last November, we’ve enjoyed getting to know a little more, really nice folk we have met before. Thanks for coming back to support us, there is no finer compliment I can think of, I’m delighted the place was as you left it and, that you enjoyed being here all over again. What stands out in your kind review and gives me most pride, is your kind recognition and respect for the team. As far as I’m concerned they deserve every ounce of credit, as without their remarkable commitment the hotel would be nothing! They’ve worked especially hard and happily this season, uplifting the spirits of guests and me too, as we all emerge bleary eyed and changed somewhat by the last couple of years. Thank you for your valuable good custom and magnificent review. Thanks too for your excellent good company and for humbling me personally. All the while this remains my home you are welcome always, so please come back, again and again! I wish you enduring fond memories of time spent in Sri Lanka, and a blissfully happy and healthy life. Warm regards and respect, Nick & the Team.

We are a family of four (kids 11 and 15 years old). We stayed at Buckingham Place after five busy days exploring the island. We had really high expectations because of all the great reviews I had read, and we were not disappointed. We had the best two days of our trip at this wonderful place. We literally saved the best for last! Neither of us wanted to leave! Everything was great: the room, the beach, the pool area, the food but the best of all was the outstanding service we received from everyone! The room we got had a view of the lagoon. It was beautiful and very spacious; we had a big open space with a double bed and two single beds for the kids and a cool skylight in the middle. The open-air bathroom was huge, and the shower was amazing. The beach is beautiful and is basically just for you. The sea is rough, and you cannot swim, but we walked about 15 to 20 minutes to a small bay close by where the girls could play in the water for a while. The walk on the beach was so relaxing! The infinity pool is awesome and the whole pool area is so nice and calm, you can be there for hours enjoying the sound from the ocean. Food was fantastic, everything we tried was delicious, the presentation of the dishes was beautiful and the ambience in the dining room was very nice. The menu had a lot of different options including local food. The best of this hotel was the staff; everyone was so kind, friendly and attentive. All of them had a smile on their face, and they were always making sure we had everything we needed. Nick, the owner, stopped to say hi to us every day. We had a good conversation with him about the story of the hotel and he explained us how they aim for perfection. Well, they do a pretty good job. We had a perfect time at Buckingham Place!

Spectacular… It’s hard to imagine a nicer job! My day starts often, thanking a kind soul, today you, for a spectacular review, before spending time with delightful, happy guests all day, into the evening. It’s a long day but I’m not complaining! I can order whatever I want from the kitchen without paying for it, and help myself from the bar – who wouldn’t want to be an hotelier? Seriously, whilst the above might be true, behind the scenes, everyone runs at 100mph to ensure the slow, lazy-paced ambience of the hotel is maintained seamlessly. More so currently, as we negotiate challenges of a struggling economy and worldwide supply-chain issues! It is so rewarding whenever guests appreciate the effort and commitment of the team. Since reopening last November after a 21 month pandemic pause, I’m happy to say to my knowledge not a soul has been inconvenienced nor gone without at any time – our preparedness, back up generators and ‘buffer’ stocks make sure of that. Your eloquent, faultless review proves my point, and helps significantly by reassuring those in your footsteps. Thank you sincerely for supporting us and helping others. While the country currently struggles with its economic woes, travelers are advised to spend a little extra time when planning. But as always, the island is blessed with friendly, welcoming people, wonderful places to visit, and hotels meeting any challenge that comes its way as ours does. If ever there was a time to support Sri Lankans through travel then it is right now please! Your good custom, excellent good company and absolutely spectacular review are greatly appreciated, and sustain about 45 individuals and their dependents. I’m delighted you enjoyed yourselves so much and like you, I’m just sorry you had to leave! We would be delighted to host you again however (it was very easy!), and hope you will please kindly continue spreading the word, that Sri Lanka and Buckingham Place are still open as usual, all year round. Please come again! Warm regards & thanks, Nick & the Team
