If You want to get the feel and atmosphere of the old colonial days of the British Empire there are few places left in the world - and Matjiesfontein is an excellent choice to experience just that. Bernhard and Barbara, Czech Republic

Dear Bernhard, Thank you so much for writing a review and I trust you had a great experience on your South African trip just as much as you enjoyed your visit to Matjiesfontein. It sure is one of the last places in world where one can experience the "old colonial" feel of yesterday and even better to do it in...

From the rooms to the restaurant, the service to the Bar and the food to the double decker bus tour; a wonderful, fascinating trip back in time. The whole olde worlde Train station is well kept, well organised and well worth a visit.

Thank you very much for your review! Always lovely to hear that guests experience this Karoo village exactly the way we intend. Make sure you stop by again soonest and doing the historical Voicemap tour of Matjiesfontein. Kind regards, Werner Smit General Manager The Lord Milner Hotel Matjiesfontein

Our first visit after a gap of nearly 40 years! Not too much has changed, I think. We booked one of the very large rooms on the first floor overlooking the station(no. 18). Very comfortable, with equally large bathroom, and twin baths! The hotel is full of Victorian character, with portraits, landscapes and furniture to match. Dinner was very good....

Thank you very much for a lovely and well written review. It is amazing the number of guests who have been visiting Matjiesfontein for so many years and that this town can still give the same feeling of "a step back in time" after so many years. We look forward welcoming you again soon. Kind regards, Werner Smit General Manager...

A unique and special place that we have been visiting over the last 30 years. It has not always quite been up to the mark but always friendly and easy going and accommodating. It is part of our history and we hope it will prosper for many more years. Highly recommended. Bring your swimming costume and take a dip in...

Thank you very much for your review. We have seen many visitors like yourself who have visited Matjiesfontein several times for the last 25 to 35 years and keep returning, so it just shows us how wonderful this historical village still is. The big swimming pool really does cool one down, especially in this hot summer we are currently experiencing...

What a super hotel. It was like stepping back in time. The room was fab, a beautiful room at the front overlooking the railway. The bed was huge and very comfortable, with lovely seats on the balcony for a g&t. Dinner was really good, in the splendour of the Victorian dining room, good food and excellent service as was breakfast....

This was a stunning hotel - good rooms, lovely restaurant, marvellous swimming pool, beautiful gardens, lots of Boer War memories etc. When I last visited it, the proprietor, David Rawdon was ever present, seeing that standards were kept up, greeting everybody in the dining room. But he is no longer with us, and the current Rawdon, Jonathan, seemingly visits once...

Dear Caroline, Thank you very much for your interesting review. Over the last 3 to 4 years the hotel has spent large amounts of money on the upkeep of the hotel and the village in general. We aim to keep the old world feeling of Matjiesfontein as best we can, without to much obvious modern furniture etc., but still put...

There is always something special about visiting Matjiesfontien, and while the history and character of the town lends its own "flavor" to the experience, the setting in the Karoo adds to an always memorable stay.

Unforgettable experience. We have stopped at the coffee house multiple times during transits. The apple tart was always a favourite but the quality of it seems to have lowered and was very commercial on this last visit. The rooms were very clean and quite comfortable. The absence of a fridge was very regrettable. We loved the twin baths but one...

Thank you very much for your review and for the detailed feedback on your stay. I had a talk with our chef about the apple tart and to look at the recipe from scratch. Glad you enjoyed the rest of your stay and experienced a lovely overall service from our staff. We look forward to your next visit in Matjiesfontein....

We stayed in the Olive Schreiner Cottage which was so quaint we even had people trying to explore it thinking it was part of the museum! The whole village is a big museum. There is a great audio walking tour you can download to your phone which, using GPS, takes you round with some fun historical facts. The transport museum...

Old hotels where time passes slowly behind heavy curtains. Love them. Friendly, unofficious staff and a resident cat are important too, and an oasis of a garden. The latest in luxury is not to be found here; what there is to experience will hopefully be unchanged a quarter of a century from now.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Lord Milner is a lovely Victorian Hotel, full of history and atmosphere, begging to be explored. Matjiesfontein, the town itself has wonderful gardens to leisurely lose yourself in, interesting museums abundant with all sorts, as well as the typical general store/gift shop, a small chapel, a coffee house full of homemade goodies, an old courthouse, a recently renovated church and The Laird’s Arms Bar. Most evenings, one can enjoy a ride on the old London bus and tour the grounds with our entertainer Johnny. Then experience sundowners in the Laird's Arms. Dinner is served from 7-9pm in our beautiful candlelit dining room. We’ve hosted some beautiful weddings and outrageous birthday parties in our transport museum or the old Courthouse. We are only 3 hours from Cape Town by road or take the train.. "The Train to Matjiesfontein". ... more   less
