This was our second visit to the Lord Milner and we enjoyed it just as much as the first time, the hotel is different and quirky. Staff very pleasant and helpful, food good, the pub and coffee shop are good. It's just a real experience to stay here in the middle of the Karoo with its wonderful clear dry air. Look...

Dear Gillian, What a lovely review and thank you so much. Yes, this time of the year the air is very dry in the Karoo, but still great to come out to relax and enjoy an overall holiday experience. We also look forward to your next visit again soon. Kind regards, Werner Smit General Manager The Lord Milner Hotel Matjiesfontein

One of the best venison dishes _roast springbok loin- presentation, preparation and quality - a real toast to the chef Location although off the 'main' tourist route to us is just wonderful A real oasis The local entertainer, initially amusing could well change his act somewhat.

The Lord Milner boasts one of the best bathrooms I have seen anywhere in the world - I think we struck gold and got the Presidential suite. The bathroom has to be described - it was magnificent, Victorian in style but it never had one bath but two, side by side. As tempting as it was to Enjoy a bath...

Rooms require air-conditioning and are small double or twin beds ... Online booking site does somehow not reflect what you have requested - Confirm telephonically with the Hotel prior! Hotel staff and food was excellent.

Heavy traffic on the N1 makes for exhausting driving. Matjiesfontein was a pleasant as ever -- friendly service, clean rooms, delightful decor, good food and welcoming setting. It's inaccessibility from any other route than the N1 is our most important negative.

The Lord Milner is really the clubhouse for the small town of Matjiesfontein which in essence is a throwback to the early 1900's. The town is still owned by the original family and most of the people working in the town was born there and has a rich history which is intertwined with the town and the travelers moving through...

Hi Marco, Thank you very much for your lovely review on your stay in The Lord Milner Hotel. The town was started by Mr James Logan and was bought over in the late 1960's by the well known hotelier Mr David Rawdon. The town is still in his family trust and managed of behalf of the family by PMR Hospitality....

Maitjiesfontein is an interesting town. However many of the facilities need more than a very superficial clean up. The town in general was grubby and staff were not motivated to provide the standard of excellence that is required of this type of concept .

We enjoyed our first stay so much that we booked a second stay before leaving. Very comfortable rooms, superb cuisine, and excellent service. The town itself is very interesting with its two small museums and Johnny to entertain us in the evening. The arrival of a train gave added interest.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Lord Milner is a lovely Victorian Hotel, full of history and atmosphere, begging to be explored. Matjiesfontein, the town itself has wonderful gardens to leisurely lose yourself in, interesting museums abundant with all sorts, as well as the typical general store/gift shop, a small chapel, a coffee house full of homemade goodies, an old courthouse, a recently renovated church and The Laird’s Arms Bar. Most evenings, one can enjoy a ride on the old London bus and tour the grounds with our entertainer Johnny. Then experience sundowners in the Laird's Arms. Dinner is served from 7-9pm in our beautiful candlelit dining room. We’ve hosted some beautiful weddings and outrageous birthday parties in our transport museum or the old Courthouse. We are only 3 hours from Cape Town by road or take the train.. "The Train to Matjiesfontein". ... more   less
