We felt the dinner was not up to standard. However we will definately return for another visit. We found the staff extremely friendly and helpful. The gardens were very neat and tidy and the swimming pool was pristine. We really enjoyed the transport museum and thoroughly enjoyed the bus ride and singsong in the pub.

Wonderful isolated location in the Karoo. Fantastic garden and grounds. Old Victorian buildings have been renovated in the last few years, looking much better than some years ago. Quiet and peaceful..

Excellent. Enjoy being welcomed by Ingrid and Cindy. Of course Gert is a super star! Karoo lamb a favorite and sing along with Johnny is special. You should consider having a VIP list of guests who have been coming to Hotel for many, many years and who knew the old chap who owned it for some may years. This place...

This little town is smaller than my high school and looks like something out of a Clint Eastwood movie. The hotel is cute like a cat, worth admiring but I wouldn't advise lingering around. There is really nothing to do there, the hotel has no entertainment fascilities, and it's too close to Cape Town to be a stopover on a...

We have always enjoyed our stay at Matjiesfontein and would highly recommend to anyone. Accommodation, food and general experience has left us with great memories. We enjoy the quietude, stepping back in history, visiting the museums and making new discoveries with every visit. This oasis in the middle of the Karoo is something to behold - Thank you!

Food needs serious attention, more home-made fresh produce is needed, also you cannot serve the cheapest shop bought meat and advertise and charge it as high quality karoo lamb. The local gardens are beautifully kept, perhaps its time to introduce a veggie garden and serve your future guests food from the garden? Incredible bar but the barman needs to cheer...

Thank you very much for your review and for pointing out your constructive critics on the kitchen. We are constantly aiming to improve our total dining experience and that is why we had our kitchen staff on training by a well-known chef only a few days ago. We look forward seeing you again for a much improved dining experience. Kind...

What a pleasant stay it was. True humble community of people keeping history alive by serving with a smile. Well looked after peace of important history. Definitely a place where you can have a restful few days of relax, reading and mingling with locals.

My children absolutely loved the freedom of being able to walk in the large garden and swim in the very large pool. I loved seeing the trains pass by. The meals were excellent and the coffee very good. The GM is very hands on and the staff are friendly and very helpful.

The Management needs to be more apparent & work as hard as the staff to make this an excellentl resort. There is a big opportunity being missed here by poor management. There is a need to inject some cash into this property to bring it up to the standard that this historic place needs.

Dear Sharon, Thank you very much for your review and much appreciated. I can confidently confirm that management are working even harder than staff to make Matjiesfontein a great place, as a lot of hard work was done in 2016 on maintenance and the general upkeep of the property. A solid plan are in place for 2017 to ensure even...

Very clean and comfortable with an overall relaxed vibe especially with the broad balcony outside, which meant we could sleep with the doors open as it was warm. The cottages were luxurious and had everything we needed but we felt it was quite pricey.

Thank you very much for your review. The garden cottages is an experience on its own close to the river and pity that the river is dry this time of year. We look forward seeing you again soon! Kind regards, Werner Smit General Manager The Lord Milner Hotel Matjiesfontein

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Lord Milner is a lovely Victorian Hotel, full of history and atmosphere, begging to be explored. Matjiesfontein, the town itself has wonderful gardens to leisurely lose yourself in, interesting museums abundant with all sorts, as well as the typical general store/gift shop, a small chapel, a coffee house full of homemade goodies, an old courthouse, a recently renovated church and The Laird’s Arms Bar. Most evenings, one can enjoy a ride on the old London bus and tour the grounds with our entertainer Johnny. Then experience sundowners in the Laird's Arms. Dinner is served from 7-9pm in our beautiful candlelit dining room. We’ve hosted some beautiful weddings and outrageous birthday parties in our transport museum or the old Courthouse. We are only 3 hours from Cape Town by road or take the train.. "The Train to Matjiesfontein". ... more   less
