We stayed at the hotel December 2021 for 2 nights in a room in the main building. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The restaurant very good offering local food and fish. Our room was very nice room and had a great view overlooking the valley. The entire place is great for bird lovers.
Hotel el Pelicano is a great place to stay in San Gerardo de Rivas (if not the best). The views of the mountains, both with sunset or sunrise are marvelous! The staff is very friendly and proactive in solving issues. They even helped us with a breakfast decorated pancake-cake for my daughter's birthday. The rooms (we were in one of the bungalows) are simple, but spacious. I do feel the rooms could use a few touches with which this hotel could easily own a few more stars (currently 2 stars). This is probably the only place in town with a pool. The short trail in the forest is nice, but could use some maintenance (especially signage). Let me add that the hotel grounds are also great for birders!
Lovely staff, food was fine and hotel has beautiful views and area. It's walking distance to the cloud forest reserve. The room was cosy and clean with good bathroom. Only slight downside is sound proofing.
We only spent one night here but the birding around the area was excellent. Got our CR Brushfinch Lifer get outside the entrance to the hotel. Also recommend the Cloudbridge Reserve for birding. We had one of the rooms away from the main building. It was very quiet and had an in-room coffee maker which is always a welcome feature when you are getting up at 5:00 am to head out.
We ate here twice and both times were the food was excellent. The dining room is very nice and we sat in front of the fireplace both times. Service was attentive and prompt and the prices very reasonable. I would recommend this place for a local restaurant.
A nice hotel, surrounded by vegetation and beautiful views of the mountains. Rooms are nice, with a small fridge. It has a very nice swimming pool. The food at the restaurant or the hotel is really delicious.
Our Birding group in CR planned this trip & this hotel & grounds were very nice. The main house has very thin walls so a bit noisy but that didn’t bother us or our group as we were there to sleep. Much quieter in the separate cabins. Its definitely not a luxury hotel, much more rustic as many of the places are in the forests & jungles of CR, sort of like camping, so be prepared. Think Eco & simple living. We live in CR & read that tourists get upset w/bugs, ants, cockroaches, spiders, scorpions, etc. That’s CR, bugs everywhere so bring your repellents. There are no screens on the windows or mosquito nets for the beds, it wasn’t a problem for us at night & mosquitoes love me. It got down to around 57*F at night, had plenty of blankets. Many places in CR don’t have hot water, this place had very, very hot water & plenty of it. I even brought my own washcloth, face towel, soap, & shampoo. The food at the hotel was pretty good & we brought snacks, wine & a cooler. No coffee or coffee maker in the room. The grounds here were very nice with plenty of birds to see. Highlight for me was seeing the Coquette Hummingbird. We hiked in Chirripo Reserve at Cloudbridge, but that’s another review. All in all, we recommend.…
his lodge is in a lovely setting. We stayed in a room within the lodge and this review is about our experience. There are cabins here which are also for rent. Safer to rent a cabin because, as others have noted, you can hear everything through the walls and floor. Make sure and check with the property before you book in the lodge, to make sure they are not housing a group on the night of your stay, it can seriously derail your serenity.
My friend and I were staying elsewhere, met a very kind man, and he turned out to be the owner of this place. He was just so nice, we decided to book a night here later in our stay. Good service, clean and well-equip rooms, good food, and staff are generally from the same family. Only complaints are that is is on a very steep hill and the pool gets quite cold.
Stayed here as part of cycling tour on the lower slopes of a mountain area. The accommodation was in a wooden chalet type building with paper thin walls, no insect mesh, no hand towels and no hot water in the hand basin. The group dinner was delivered 45 minutes after the agreed time with no apology. It was very mediocre, one person’s chicken was raw - again no apology, no compensatory replacement, burnt lentil burger- very small portions after having been cycling all day! Watching the birds early next morning was the only bonus!
