Start your stay with a private castle tour! Proprietor is friendly. Rooms decorated with antique-looking furniture, everything very clean. Large fluffy towels, good amount of counter space, good water pressure. Comfy bed. Dining room for dinner and breakfast was lovely, with great views depending on your seat. Dinner started with herb bread, brown bread and an amuse bouche. Good scallops and okay house salad. Decent salmon with spinach. Mains come with decent side vegetables (yummy parmesan potatoes, boiled cauliflower and broccoli, sweet and mashed potatoes, cabbage). Pistachio cheesecake didn't have much flavor. Breakfast had good hot and decent cold options.

From the moment we walked into the Ballinalacken Castle Country house we felt at home. The drive up through the gate is beautiful, the grounds are immaculate and the views are simply stunning.
We arrived in time to get a table for dinner- our room was the Atlantic ocean and it was spacicous, comfortable with lovely, elegant decor. The bathroom was perfect (american’s love our hot showers after a journey)
After we dropped our bags we ate the most delicious meal! The menu was varied and all four of us enjoyed everything. The lamb was my choice and it was sublime. Salmon steak and Cod for the others with oyster + soup starters and a delicious dessert menu.
Wine list was full with wonderful options.
The dining room was full but it never felt tight, crowded or loud. A wild lightning storm blew threw and the Ballinalacken stood strong and did not miss a beat.
We slept comfortably and soundly on lovely crisp sheets.
The sun rose, breakfast buffett greeted us with delicious options and wonderful tea/coffee+ juices.
The service was fabulous everyone we encountered made us feel welcome.
Any question I had Celia was able to answer. Leaving this beautiful place this morning was not easy for me. The sun was out on the Atlantic and the sitting room had room for me to stay and enjoy the view.
Everyone needs to find a reason to come for a meal or even better a night. Your trip will be more memorable if you do and your heart will be full.
I’m not sure there are words to accurately express how lovely this hotel is.. you have to experience it for yourself.

We were staying in the area and chose this place for diner from the excellent TA reviews … we weren’t disappointed!
The dining room is decorated in period with the history of the hotel … 1930s. The table was beautifully dressed. The menu is not large but has some tasty sounding dishes, I chose beef filet. It arrived, after being freshly cooked, nicely presented on the plate and was perfectly tender. The accompanying veg were inventive and complimented the meat. The cheese board made a perfect partner and was full of tasty local cheese delights.

Prices are reasonable for this fine dining experience and service was attentive throughout our meal.

Thank you.

Our first stop in Ireland was the Ballinalacken Castle Country House in County Clare, on the west coast of Ireland. Our plan was to drive and stay in one location for 3-4 days and make daily forays sightseeing in and around County Clare. Ballinalacken Castle Country House was a perfect location and upscale Country House for us. The House was grande, immaculate modern rooms, delicious food cooked by chefs, a comfortable parlor to sit and read or chat, a small tavern for after dinner drinks and more and beautiful views with an ancient castle on the property in which we received a guided tour by Declan.
The proprietors, Cecilia and Declan were perfect hosts. They assisted us in deciding where we would tour in the area, The impressive Cliffs of Moher, the town of Doolin with shops and restaurants, Doolin Cave, the ferry to visit the Aran Islands and more. We stayed four lovely nights at the Ballinalacken Castle Country House. We started every day with a hearty breakfast and we were ready to tour Ireland.
We look forward to staying there on future trips to Ireland.

Five-star castle hotel and very delicious dinner at their restaurant.

This well-maintained castle hotel is highly recommended for couple, we stayed at the Honeymoon suite recommended by Cecilia, the host, in the last minute. She is very friendly and helpful.

The honeymoon suite is very nice with sundeck inside the room, high privacy and clean.

The have private tour for hotel guests only to the castle ruin next door.

We had a wonderful stay at Ballinalacken Castle Country House. The honeymoon suite was magical and we will never forget enjoying the sunset and sunrise through the incredible glass conservatory in our room--and even the Aran Islands and Cliffs of Moher in the distance! The classic Irish meals at the Castle House restaurant were delicious and the service friendly. Plus we appreciated the various peaceful living room settings in which to relax and read. Cecelia was a terrific communicator leading up to our trip and warm and accommodating upon arrival. She even sent back a raincoat left behind without delay. We would absolutely recommend this hotel to travelers looking for a quiet, cozy, and artful location, away from the hustle and bustle but within short reach of Doolan's famous pubs brimming with outstanding, traditional live music and Ireland's incredible, lush beauty. Thank you, Cecelia and staff!

Me and a few friends were staying in Lisdoondavarna for a couple of nights midweek. Having searched for places to eat in Lisdoonvarna on a Tuesday night, we realised that many places were either booked, closed or pub grub. We were looking for something a little bit more upmarket as we were planning to have a few more drinks and pub grub the following night. Having read some positive reviews and quite off-the-cuff, we decided to book Ballylacken which was a mere 5 mins outside Lisdoonvarna. A classic country house with traditional decor. On arrival, we were met with a friendly hostess who was extremely chatty. We were offered a drink at the bar which we gladly accepted. The cosy snug lounge was a lovely start to the evening and we were soon presented the menu which did not disappoint. Varied choices including fresh seafood, meats and vegetarian options all made an appearance. Once seated at our table in the dining room, tasty breads and a salmon canapé awaited us.
The food was simply delicous. Genuinely the nicest chowder I have ever had (creamy and packed full of fish), followed by the pork which came with the most amazing gratin potato on the side. I finished the evening with a tarte tatin. I'm undecided as to what was nicer, the tarte tatin or the most scrumptious salted carmel icecream I have ever had which came with it.
The service by the staff and attentiveness of who I presume was the owner, put us at ease and the meal was relaxed and we were under no pressure to leave. This restaurant is everything I love about family run fine dining experiences. A memorable experience which I hope to repeat soon.

This was a "trip of a lifetime" for us. We spent two weeks driving Ireland, Scotland, then ended up in London for the fight home. Due to covid, it took almost 3 years for us to actually make the trip.

Our hosts at Ballinalacken Castle could not have been nicer. Upon arrival, Herself advised us that she had been watching our date changes over the years and decided that we deserved an upgrade. She put us in their Honeymoon Suite! It had the most incredible view from the sitting room made completely of glass. At night, Himself would be tending the bar and allow us to take our drams to our room where we closed the curtains that separated the sitting room from the bedroom, kept the lights off and enjoyed our drinks in complete darkness with only the moon, stars and ourselves.

We were also treated to a tour of the family Castle, which sits just above the House. It was wonderfully informational and enchanting. Later in our trip, we would put all the information Himself shared with us, as we toured other "Tower Houses" - why they were built the way they were, how the families lived there and the histories of those families.

The Main House is large and decorated with a more family feel. It's fancy, but in a way the does not make you feel uncomfortable in their spaces.

We enjoyed the breakfast VERY much and our hosts where willing to chat and help us with suggestions for the rest of our trip - including the options for getting to Dingle (which was our next destination).

If we are ever blessed to get get back to Ireland, we wouldn't hesitate to visit our friends at Ballinalacken!

Lovely location pitched high above Galway bay, 5 klm from Doolin village.
Overall, the accommodation is standard 1990’s decor and although a little tired, was very clean.
Dinner in the restaurant was very average and overpriced, suggest skipping it and head to the village, lots of options, would recommend The Ivy , doolin.
Breakfast was adequate but far from the best Irish we have had.
Staff adequately efficient but it must be a challenge to keep staff motivated when many guests are only staying one night in their lives.
With circa 16 rooms it’s important to note if you have any mobility challenges, avoid this location, steps everywhere and no disability access visible anywhere.
Best thing about this location? The view of Galway bay and the Aran Islands from the bedroom window.

Response from cecilia O'Callaghan, Owner at Ballinalacken Castle Country House
Responded 6 Sept 2023
Hi LOONEYTUAMS We are glad that you were happy with the location of our Hotel and that you enjoyed the views during your recent stay with us. However I must point out to you that the decor here in Ballinalacken Castle is not 1990s style . The house dates back to 1840 and the decor is Country House style with Zoffany wallpaper throughout ,antique furniture, original open fireplaces and full length drapes We are not a modern shiny Hotel. We are a 4 Star Country House Hotel which has a sense of history about it . As we are a listed building we are not allowed by the OPW to alter it in order to facilitate wheelchair access Under no circumstances do we advertise ourselves as having disability access. Truly we are disappointed with your comments about the food. We strive to use the freshest ingredients form local suppliers and offer it at at a reasonable price. Our staff have a reputation of being friendly and courteous at all times. They work very hard at making the guests stay comfortable. We are sorry for not reaching your expectations. Regards, Cecilia O'Callaghan .

From the minute you arrive until you reluctantly leave this family run hotel, you will experience warmth, incredible food and amazing views over the Aran Islands and the Cliffs of Moher. Cecilia and Declan make you feel very welcome to their hotel. The private tour of the castle by Declan was very interesting. The small bar was a great additional feature. This is a great base for travelling around County Clare whether you want to go by car or on foot. There is an amazing walk from immediately outside the gate to Ballyvaughan which takes a good five hours walking Up and down the Burren green paths.
This is a very special place to stay for people who appreciate old world charm and service.

Can you walk in and out of town from this location or would you need to drive?
Answer from eaglelake20

I agree that it's best to drive to town. We walked from the hotel to the Doolin Cave, which is really close by and on the road to Doolin town. But we felt like we were taking our lives into our hands because the road was so narrow, with no shoulder to step off onto if a car came by. Plus, the road is pretty curvy, so sightlines are bad.

Hi all , We are a four star hotel with a restaurant and a full bar which includes cider and Guinness .As it is a family run hotel there is always a member of the family delighted to fill a drink for the guests.

Hi there! There are taxis in town but not many, the pubs in town are great but the restaurant in the hotel is one of the best in the area. Pub in the hotel is VERY quiet and you'll find you're often the only one there, but it's very quaint and the service is good. No live music in the hotel pub. The actual town has a few really good pubs, and it's the centre of music so you'll find it all good fun. Recommend O'Connor's and McGann's (locals' favourites). Enjoy!
