Me and some of my travel buddies stopped off here to get some water however we were greeted by a rude member of staff who made us feel very unwelcome.I strongly advise not to stay here as that member of staff gave a very bad impression of the place.we were not allowed even buy food from the vending machines, ridiculous!
This is a nice hostel, has the amenities you'd expect and it's reasonably priced, but the location is amazing. The views from the dining area are spectacular. However, it can be quite difficult to find, and the roads can be treacherous if you're hiking there.
We stayed while walking the Wicklow way. As a hostel, I couldn't fault Knockree, seems to be very well-run. the kitchen, dining area, and common areas were spotless. The breakfast offered was basic, but tasty... We stayed in a beautiful double room with beautiful views out over the Wicklow countryside, the Sugar loaf, Maulin etc.. Would definitely recommend this hostel, it's right on the Wicklow way route, which was perfect for us.
The YHA hostel in Knockree is accessible by the 185 bus from Bray. These buses have space (hold) for bicycles. The walk from the closest bus stop is around 30 - 40 minutes. The hostel is set in the wicklow mountains. The garden of Ireland, a beautiful place, surrounded by fields of grazing sheep and horses and at this time of year, spring, wild garlic can be found growing by the streams and tributaries. Beautiful.
We stayed here because there was no place else. The reviews we read were actually very misleading so we were expecting a lot more. Rude staff. No en suite bathroom. Whole place stunk like onions. My bed had only a thin mattress compared to the others in the bunk suite. We stayed here after an 8 hour day hiking the Wicklow Way and the lady working the reception desk easily earned the rudest person in Ireland award (we have been here for five days). The self catering kitchen has old, disgusting sponges and rags to clean and a horrible set up for dumping food and waste. The morning breakfast we bought was ok but not worth 10 euro. And the packed lunches were supposed to be all ham and cheese sandwich but she only made 4 and the other 2 were “vegetarian” meaning she ran out of ham. No price break tho. We paid 40 euro each and that was about 30 euro too much. A smile, friendly word and other pleasantries would go a long way in this case. …
