Being at Blessington for a kayaking even, we stayed only one night and it definitely wasn't long enough, as the area has so much to offer. And Abhainn Ri is perfectly placed to enjoy it all. Booking B&Bs online based on reviews is always a bit of a lottery, but this one was a win. Beautifully located with great views, the rooms are comfortable, and the facilities spotless. Breakfast was cooked to order, and perfectly adequate. The pub in nearby Hollywood was recommended for dinner and a pint, and this was pretty good too. If in the area again would we use Abhainn Ri? Absolutely!

Beautifully refurbished farmhouse, with a wonderful view across the lake from our bedroom window. Niamh is a wonderful host, who was so friendly and helpful. Beautiful breakfasts, and Niamh’s baking is absolutely amazing. A wonderful rural idyll, and a great base from which to explore the beautiful Wicklow countryside. Only stayed two nights, but wish we could have stayed longer.

Wish we could have stayed here for longer. Absolutely gorgeous farmhouse overlooking a lake. The breakfast was delicious. There is a small village a couple of miles away where you can indulge yourself in a very traditional Irish pub. I left here totally relaxed. Great place to get away from the crowds for a while.

One of the most beautiful and welcoming places we have ever stayed. To the point where we didn't want to leave when it was time to go home. Abhainn Ri is scenic, the owner is extremely friendly and accommodating, and it's a great place for kids. Lots to do around the grounds with wonderful animals. Cannot recommend this place enough. We absolutely loved it. The room was very clean as well and had everything we needed!

The views are stunning. The place is very clean. It’s a small house with just two guestrooms upstairs, a guest lounge and a breakfast area downstairs. The garden suite is an external attachment to the property. The owner does not live in the house. The lady arrives by car to serve breakfast, meet and greet, etc. Breakfast is a pre-order, both of food and time. The cooked breakfast is served very quickly after sitting at the table. Within the room the floor space was restrictive, just a narrow strip to manoeuvre around the bed. Someone has already commented in the reviews that the TV is very high up on the wall. I think that is a safety feature, as otherwise it could have your eye out as you turned into the room from the doorway. I wouldn’t describe the room as deluxe. I appreciate the location, the walk to the lake and proximity to animals, however I was expecting a lot more, in terms of the actual accommodation, for my money.

Response from Niamh Byrne, Owner at Abhainn Ri
Responded 2 Jun 2023
Dear "Behind the Door 24" Thank you for taking the time to review. The Farmhouse is advertised as a traditional irish farmhouse which has just two bedrooms and we built the garden suite in 2018 due to high demand. The farmhouse has been in the family for many generations and we thought guests would like to experience it when we renovated it in 2013. Due to its unique location and its 180 year old character. We do own and live on the farm next to the farmhouse and when a guest arrives without giving an approximate time we do have to rush to them and the car is quicker than walking accross the field. We work seven days a week and for long hours and sometimes we go out of the farmhouse for a while. We ask guests to pre order breakfast when they arrive as we find it much for efficient in the morning for guests rather than waitinging 30 minutes for us to cook it. Maybe we should consider asking the guests if they prefer to order in the morning. An old Irish farmhouse is always going to be smaller than a hotel or new purpose built accommodation but it offers such character that the majority of our guests just love it and we have large numbers of repeat guests. So sorry if it did not suit your taste. We are unsure who you actually are as you are 'behind the door' with your review and we cannot see who you are from your location. Best wishes for the future anyway. Niamh

I gave a 5* rating but I wish it could have been 10*s. Personally I gave the highest ratings for ambience, cleanliness, hospitality and the most stunning location imaginable. Arriving at 3pm our host Niamh warmly welcomed us and showed us to our room, and offered us a refreshing freshly brewed coffee with lemon drizzle cake. What a great start! Our en suite room was small but well appointed and, since we were going to be out for most of our stay, it was perfect. Breakfasts were ordered in advance and cooked to order. Delicious fresh free range eggs accompanied our full Irish breakfasts that became a great start to the day and delicious as expected. The roads to our b&b were challenging but Google maps brought us successfully there. In good weather it is vital to come outside and take in the wonderful views across the lake towards the rolling Wicklow hills. Having spent 2 nights here we both came away with a wonderful feeling of calm. Tranquility takes on new meaning when all you can hear is birdsong.

A delicious breakfast. I had a lovely cheesy omelette,my girlfriend had the pancakes. Breakfast was served with a selection of home baked bread, scones, freshly squeezed juices and home made jams. The bedroom had outstanding views of the nearby lakes, and the wonderful and helpful host made this quick overnight trip for a wedding a joy.

Abhainn Ri was a most beautiful place to visit. Niamh was really friendly and helpful and put enormous effort into making our stay perfect. We stayed in the Garden Suite, and everything from the welcome tray of home- baked treats on arrival to the delicious breakfast looking out on the lake really enhanced our stay. The view is picture perfect, and it's an idyllic place to escape busy city life. The attention to detail is commendable-there's a boot room if you want to borrow wellies and there is a path cut through the field so you can wander down to the lake. The accommodation is spotless and the bed is as comfortable as any 5* hotel. We'll definately be back!
